Fishing line does work and many keepers do use it on frames with no foundation. Its used in conjunction with starter strips to help stabilize the hanging fresh comb. Love your videos Tim, keep them coming.

Fishing line works good if your cutting out queen cells for splits. You can just cut through the line if the cell happens to be on top of it. I tried it but I don’t use anything now just a starter strip and let the bees go from there. I just crush and strain honey.

No worries. Video is just fine and dandy. Being honest and sounding dumb are two different things. I recently built a new hive stand in a 'T' fashion. It holds two hives and has space for two boxes between hives and two on the 'T' section. Makes it easy on this old man's back when working hives and do not have to put anything on the ground. @larrypeterson49456 жыл бұрын
Friend, I have been using fishing line in an "X" configuration with starter strips for two years now. It works really well to support newly drawn comb. After the frame is secured on all four sides it spins out really well. I use 50 lb test from Walmart because it is cheap. This will be the third year and this method, In My Humble Opinion, this is a really good method for me and the system I use. Sometimes I also use a double 1/4 inch middle bar made of pine. Best wishes, LP.

Hi Mr Durham, love your vidz!! I am 60+ surviving in South Africa, and have three hives currently, I started last year with one. I have motivated my son-in-law and he has just informed me that his first colony just moved in. We will probably unite all the hives one day as his property is must bigger than mine, how do I go about creating a "bee-station" and what plant do I plant in close vicinity to the "bee-station?"
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
I don't think it is cost effective in planting flower or blooms for bees. Mother nature has to do that. If you did some planting, I don't know the plants in your area. Thanks for letting us know your in South Africa

@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
That requires more of my opinion. I don't know your area but, After you put the package in, right at first, have enough frames of drawn comb to accommodate the bees. If the package will cover 4 frames, the have 4 frames of comb. The other 5 frames need to be protected from beetle and moth. You must keep an eye on them and when they need 2 more frames, put 2 in the hive. Let me know if I explained myself good to you.

How long should you leave a queen caged up in hive when you catch a swarm?

When you catch a swarm the bees are already used to the queen so she will not be in a cage. When you order package of bees, the bees will let her out of her cage in a day or two

Please believe me when I tell you, you can not trap bees out of anything. Many many people just have to find this out the hard way. You can not save the bees

if you have multiple hives, say 4 or 5 do they need to face alternate directions ?
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
No. Caution you to not put new hives close together & especially facing the same direction. After they got used to their hive, then you can start moving them say 2 to 3 feet per day to their final place

Thank you, Mr. Durham! I watch your videos often. I was wondering if there was a way to do splits without having extra land 2 miles away. I apologize if you've addressed this in another video but haven't seen it yet.
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
Some people apparently have had success in placing a limb with good amount of leaves on it right in front of the hive. Some beekeepers screen the entrance for 2 to 3 days. Another effective way is make your splits and don't worry about it Then on the next day check and if there are not enough bees in the split, swap the positions of the split and the mother hive. Keep us posted.
@1234547139ful6 жыл бұрын
Well, Mr. Durham... the queen I was going to use for the split died before I could get it to the hive. It was a couple days late in shipping, but alive when she first arrive, so the apiarist didn't want to replace it. I had to keep her a bit longer than I wanted to after a couple failed attempts to locate the queen (it's pretty big) and some weather issues. The bees have gotten bigger than they used to be when I first got them as a package a few years ago (physically, each bee is bigger) and have gotten a bit aggressive this season, so they don't give me much time before they become too intense to keep searching. Anyhow, I went ahead with the split in hopes that they still had some time to raise their own queen - the genetics of which I won't be happy about, but they will settle down a little bit once she hatches. Hopefully there are enough drones out - it is pretty hot now in Texas. I checked on the hive today. The non-mother hive is quite testy, but bees are going in and out, appear populous in the hive, and so its showing signs that the split, so far, is successful. Thanks for helping all of us amateurs. When stuff like this happens I realize how much more I have to learn as a beekeeper.

Sorry for being late getting back to you. My PC has been in the shop. regardless of the sugar bottle size, fill it 1/2 full of sugar and the rest with water. Stir good. Feed until the cost of the the sugar starts to hurt. Feed till say 8 frames are drawn out but there are many factors involved here

Hi Tim, Thanks again for another informative video. I'm curious of how many bee yards you run and how many hives per yard? I know it depends on the location but on average how many hives do you suggest a yard can handle? Also when you split a colony to prevent them from swarming do you later join them back as 1 colony? Thanks
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
We usually put 25 hives to a yard and then go at least 2 miles or more for another yard. You can put them back together but usually we don't get around to doing that.

Sir, another question... I bought used hive boxes. The bottom board is screened with #5 hardware cloth. Bees were going in and out of the bottom board. I removed the board and replaced it with another bottom board with #8 hardware cloth. The entrance on this new bottom board is on the left instead of the right, like the bottom board I replaced. The bees are really confused and backing up on the bottom board screen and landing board. Did I mess up??? Will the bees figure it out?

We have a huge hive and would like to split them. How can we split it without buying another queen? Thank you...from Moore Honey 🐝
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
It is natural for bees to swarm. That is how they multiply like humans have babies. If you split a hive, most likely both splits will not make extra honey this year. If your hive is making swarm queen cells and if you catch this or you go into your hive at the right time and you see they are getting ready to swarm, them you can split them and you do not have to put buy a new queen as they have the queen cells.

Hi Tim. The guy I've seen using fishing line in frames only uses it when they use starter strips instead of fulls sheets of foundation....that is to ensure extracting the honey does not blow out the foundation.....does this detail change your view??? Thanks
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
One other viewers said the same thing you said. Some new ideas do work.. I just have not tried it
@Houndog32326 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, been using fishing line myself for several years now. I use it with starter strips, and full sheets of foundation; works great. I use it in extraction of honey frames, and down in the brood chamber frames. Makes it easier if you have to remove queen cells by cut out, the fishing line will cut easy with a knife, whereas if you had wire, you would need wire cutters.
@richardwaynick87956 жыл бұрын
Been using fishing line in mine for 1 1/2 years now. The bees work them faster than foundation with wire which. And they don’t want to build on plastic foundations

Really Amazing info, I been looking for the Optimal distance between two hives , Lot of people said distance between tow Hives does not matter , but after watching your video i cam to know that you Need to setup Hives at least 10 feet away during initial setup and then start moving closer to foundation Hive 3 feet per day .. Can you please confirm if this trick will also work if my initial setup 100 hives 10 feet apart spread in a 10,000 sqft sqare
@WallsBeeMan4 жыл бұрын

Hi mr Durham, I wanted to get back to you on splitting a package. I asked you about a month ago what you thought on that. You and everyone I asked didn’t think it was a good idea. I understand why but I did it anyway to see what would happen. I got 3 packages and split one of them. One of the splits is outdoing one of the full packages. It has about 12 frames of bees and the full package has about 9. I’m really surprised. Hopefully I don’t have to buy Bees anymore because I plan on doing some splits and make as many nucs to overwinter as I can. We’ll see how it goes. Thank you

What temperature is needed to check hive in spring? I've got a TB and am hesitant to break propolis seal until temps are in50-60s to check for brood and the Queen.
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
do not worry about breaking propolis seal. Bees need, need ventilation all year and especially;y in the winter. It needs to bee at least 60 degrees or above when you take a frame of eggs or larvae out of the hive.

You mentioned keeping hives far apart when installing packages.... Does the same rule apply if installing nucs? Seeing a nuc is already established with a queen scent, I would think they can find their way back to the right Hive.
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
Yes, same thing applies to nucs. After they get used to the area then you can start moving them a little each day. It is the location they zero in on, not the queen but they do know her.

Hello I really enjoyed your videos, couple of questions? Do you have a recipe for bee bread? Are you supposed to feed pollen to your bees when you have rainy days? If yes what is the best pollen substitute you can get? Thanks. Cesar from Provo Utah
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
If you are in an area which has different tree and a few fields of weeds, I would not worry about feeding any type of pollen or substitute. You just can not beat Mother nature. If you live in pine trees and nothing but pine for a 2 mile radius, that would be different but you would have to move your bees if there was nothing but pines. We never fed pollen or substitutes.

Mr. Durham I am very new to beekeeping. I invested in two hives and want to feed them by putting an empty top box with the feeders like you have shown before. But people say don't give them two much room. By doing this will be to much room? Also one of the hives I bought has two brood boxes. How do you know when to reverse the boxes?
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
I want to answer correctly. The top feeder is plywood size of the hive and you cut a round hole for the mason canning jar lid to fit in it so feeding them this was, you are not giving them \extra room. Actually, you can reverse them now not even knowing when to dot it then is 4 weeks, reverse again. Holler if you need help......tim

After installing a five frame nuc into a 10 frame brood box, how long does it take to fill up before you need to add another box?

What do you think of plastic foundation?
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
I have used it very little as I'm probably stuck in my ways but a lot of beekeepers are liking it so it must be good.

Tim, question about ventilation. I put a top feeder on my hives, 5" high and same size as a super. It holds 4 gal. of sugar water. It has a screen going completely across the hive, in the middle, where bees come up and feed. Is this enough ventilation along with a screen bottom board, as one of my hives has lots more bees at the entrance all day until around 7;00 PM. I don't know if this is a heat problem. Thank you, as always. These are new nucs and packages.
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
We need air flow thru the top of the hive, ventilation. We don't consider the bottom screened board ventilation. One colony being stronger and hanging out doesn't necessarily mean they are too hot. If you want, you can take a frame or 2 of capped brood out of the strong colony and put it in the weaker colony. You still want air flow thru the top of the hive.

Thanks again Tim.

My dad is from Mississippi and you remind me a lot of him. I really enjoy watching your videos. What do you think of splitting a package? Someone told me they order an extra queen and make two colonies out of one package. Thank you. John

No, I would never do that unless it was a 6 pound package.

I have a pretty flat roof on my shed (long enough too) Is there any reason I wouldn't want to put the bees up there. I have children, and pets and I'm working with less than an acre.Thanks For the great videos.
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
You can absolutely put the bees up there. As long as your not old like me plus do not fall. It won't be as convenient but if your young, that's no problem.

@@WallsBeeMan well thank you sir for the quick reply. I'm 44 so not to young not to old yet. I took your advice from another video and ordered unassembled hives and frames from Kelly bees. I followed up with a call and there customer service was great. Thanks again and God bless you

Wood glue all joints. Be sure frames are square & not crooked. Be sure put nail thru the top of the end bar nail going into the top bar. If can, caulk outside corners of boxes before painting. Enjoy.....Holler if any questions......tim

Hi Mr Durham - I love your videos. I started 4 new packages this year and they all have drawn comb I gave them from my previous year. If I want to get honey this year, can i just put a queen excluder on top and then add a super of drawn comb and keep my colony to only the one deep box? I"m worried that if I add a second brood chamber, they'll spend the whole honey flow packing the honey in the deeps and I won't get anything in my super.
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
You are the firs to ask this question. It's good your bees are OK. Yes, you can put a queen excluder on top of the one brood box then place a honey super next for your honey. This is a hard question to answer by typing because in this situation, there are several variables. Colonies can be very different. Depending on your time and desire, you could do the following. Let's say you set a hive up as stated and when the brood chamber is all full of eggs/brood, you move this brood chamber to the top and you replace with a new box on the bottom. The queen can continue to lay. Let me know if I am not clear.
@gkbair6 жыл бұрын
Ok that makes sense, sort of reversing your hive bodies in reverse! Are you saying the queen will go down to the bottom to lay, but the workers will want to store honey above in the honey super and avoid wanting to put it on the bottom deep?

Hey Tim great info thanks as always, Hive over wintered well and I will be trying my first split in a few weeks, I think I want to try a walkaway split with 3 or 4 frames i'm not seeing one of your videos doing that an I just missing it?

Understand seams everyone says things a little different, I watched that one again thanks for the link, do you think I could set it next to the old hive or will it have to be moved farther away? I won't be adding a queen I will let them make their own

Kim is Kevin Pattison here again hey I got a question and I just don't know the answer to it why haven't figured it out on your feeder I know the ratio is one to one but in the balls jar how do they feed on that do you put holes in the lid or I don't know because I'm watching 628 dirt rooster and he's got one in the hive just sitting in there upside down and I can't tell if he's got any holes in it or what so how do you or what do you do with your jar with your one-to-one mixture in it thanks for your time Tim

Great vids, please keep them coming and thank you for your efforts in sharing your knowledge.........Question, approximately how much sugar water will I need for a new hive of 3 LBS of bees? (Zone 5, Ontario, Canada)
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Phil, I appreciate that. Wow, Canada is way North of Mississippi. When someone in Canada or Alaska ask me a bee question, I always wonder if I'm telling them wrong. I think I can only say several pounds. As your colony grows, you will kind of be shocked as to how fast they can take a gallon of sugar syrup.

Apparently they did not swarm on you, If there are a lot of bees, you can split it. You don't need to use a queen excluder. Subscribe to my channel please........tim

Thank you for another informative video Mr. Tim! (Jokes included!) :) I do want to ask about using DE (Diatomaceous Earth) around the hive to keep hive beetles, ants, and other pests away from the bees. This worked great to keep mites & pests off of my chickens, and I was wondering if this would be a good option for the bees as well? Do you know if it is safe for the bees? We sprinkled it in a circle around our chicken coop, so I figure we would circle it around the hive stand if it's safe. Many blessings to you, your wife, and your family! You are a huge inspiration to us new beekeepers!

@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
No need to use reducer. Just do not be sloppy with sugar syrup. Do not drip any around. Do not let the jar run empty. Fill it when it get 2/3 used up

Hi Tim , love your videos! Your red T-shirt is fine. Please can you help me with my hives? I have 2 deep brood hives ( two of) and this year I’d like to continue with one deep brood hives. How should I go about from 2 deep to 1 deep? Thanks again!
@WallsBeeMan6 жыл бұрын
There are different approaches. One is, Place a queen excluder between the boxes in 3 days but I would wait 4 day, If you see eggs in the top box, you know where the queen is and visa versa. Separate the boxes and put new queen in box that doesn't have eggs. Move the new queen box off 2 miles then move back in 3 days. OR, screen up the new queen box for 2 to 3 days.
