Very nice and thorough video, Jim. My wife and I had been on 4 Viking river cruises before. Our first ocean cruise with Viking is in less than 60 days--Scandinavia & The Kiel Canal. We had been on about 15 ocean cruises since 2000 with Carnival, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, and Princess. Ah, those big ships do have their merits though. I suspect this upcoming one will be the best. Just some minor comments: 1. Veranda is the less expensive cabin category and the goodies in the frig is filled once only--on the day you get on the ship. Deluxe veranda is the next one up, and the goodies get refilled everyday as you mentioned (in addition, you get 1 guaranteed seating at each of alternative dinning room (Manfredi's and The Chef's Table) but this should not be part of this video.) 2. For most other cruise line, they give you the cabin price in large prints and then you have to go into the fine prints to find the port charges that is additional. For Viking, the fine print tells you that the port charges are included in your cruise fare. 3. If someone has the flexibility, Viking's last minute offers (about 3 or 4 months) are just irresistible. For example, I have seen an 8-day last-minute January (2016 or 2017) cruise from Barcelona to Rome for about $2000 and free round trip airfare--the weather might not be ideal but what the hack. For our first river cruise (Cities of Light, form Paris to Prague), it was free air as well. 4. If you buy the flights from Viking, their fare are very good. For example, round trip Europe for about $1000. To New York, Miami or Puerto Rice for $199, 299, or even free.

We did our first Viking (river) cruise last year. The environmental conditions were not perfect due to the European drought and the cruise ending up being part river cruise and part bus cruise. Having been dealt a bad hand by Mother Nature, Viking absolutely excelled in dealing with the issues created by the low water and the resultant changes in the itinerary. I wonder how well the other river cruise lines do in adverse conditions. But given my positive experience with Viking, I wouldn't take the chance using any other cruise line.

Yes, Viking customer service is really great... right up there with the way they treat you in The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line. Those are the two best I've found as far as being treated the way I want to be treated. The worst was MSC. They treated us so bad, I don't think my wife will ever go back! Everything went flawlessly on our cruise on Viking Sea. There was never a need to ask for any special help with any situations on this particular cruise. But two years ago, on my first Viking Ocean cruise, something went awry on an excursion to Jost Van Dyke... and Viking totally took a bad situation and completely turned it around for the best. Sounds like what happened to you, too.

I was actually thinking that our bathroom on the K'dam, while not as opulent as this bathroom, did have a really awesome large shower, and also captured that clean contemporary look. But our regular cabin didn't have these kind of perks; maybe some of the mariner club perks/cabins have them. I was quite pleased with our one HAL cruise, although I didn't like how they seemed to shut down various parts of the buffet fairly early (well before 9pm).
@JimZim6 жыл бұрын
I think the folks at Holland American really should invite me on for a cruise sometime. I really don't see myself as a Holland America kind of guy. The likelihood of me paying for a HAL cruise seems quite low. But if they think I've got it completely wrong, I'm open to giving it a try at their expense. And if it turns out to be great, I would make a video saying what an idiot I am and how wrong I was about HAL.
@SpeedNoodles6 жыл бұрын
I feel like I'd be bored senseless on a HAL cruise, but their itineraries are just to die for, so if I kept myself really busy on port days maybe I'd be too tired at night and on sea days to care! Viking also has fantastic itineraries. I'm just not able to either afford (Viking) or take enough time off from work (HAL) to try either one yet.
@monkeyb18206 жыл бұрын
@@SpeedNoodles we did one Hal, over a school break, so there were lots of families, maybe a couple hundred kids or so. They did trivia, game-show type stuff, it was actually pretty similar to any other cruise line. The outdoor pool scene was quieter. They didn't have fancy waterslides/flowriders/ziplines. Their 'dive in' restaurant was good. The shower on Koningsdam was large and worked great. So I wouldn't really write it off based on the hal stereotype.

@JimZim6 жыл бұрын
At breakfast, the buffet was quite good... in some ways better than on a mega cruise ship, because they are feeding such smaller numbers of people they can take the time to give you full service. Where a mega cruise ship would cook up a bunch of waffles in advance and then leave them out in a warming tray (where they inevitably do not stay very warm) on Viking they will cook a fresh waffle on demand, while you wait. I like that MUCH better. They are also happy to respond to special requests, in a way you'll never get them to do on a mega ship. I don't like my croissants at room temperature... I like them warm. Try asking for a warmed up croissant on a mega ship. But they were happy to warm up a croissant for me on Viking Sea. In fact, the girl that worked that pastry section of the buffet each morning seemed to genuinely delight in being able to do something special like that to make my breakfast perfect. She did it with a huge smile, and at the end of the cruise made a point to tell me how pleased she was that she could give me that small extra service that made my breakfast so special. I never had lunch in the buffet, because we were usually on a shore excursion... or we just had a burger out at the pool grill. The problem with the buffet on a small ship like this is that they simply can't offer the variety of choices that a big buffet on a mega cruise ship can offer. This is especially noticeable at dinner. On NCL, it wouldn't surprise me to see 3 or 4 different kinds of potatoes at dinner time... mashed, baked, french fries, and sometimes even au gratin. On Viking, it was baked potatoes every single night in the buffet. Really, for the largest number of choices, you are better off on a small ship like this to eat in the main restaurant at dinner time... not the buffet. It seems like they put a lot more effort in to the dinners in the restaurant, than they do in the buffet. Regarding entertainment... The mega ships definitely win in this category. They had an Abba tribute on Viking Sea that was really good, and they had a big party out by the mid ship pool with some great music and dancing... but the amount and quality of the entertainment is much lower than you'll get on a mega ship. It really didn't bother me, though! I made so many friends on this cruise that we just spent time together in the evening, rather than going out to shows. And we were so busy during the days... with 9 different islands to visit over the 10 days... that I had no interest in staying up late!

The National Sleep Foundation says that 18 million Americans have sleep apnea. Men get it more often than women. People 40 years old or older get it more often than the younger folks, and overweight people get it more than people who are slim. As a 61 year old guy packing around quite a few extra pounds, I think I am the poster child! But even for those without sleep apnea, having an electrical outlet and a couple of USB charging ports on your side of the bed is a good thing. It amazes me that some cruise lines still don't put them on their brand new ships. I have to think it's because of penny pinching. Save $5 per cabin on a cruise ship with 3000 cabins and that's something a cruise line VP might like. Spend $5 per cabin on a ship with only 450 or so cabins... and I guess you can see why it's a no-brainer for Viking.

What's the cost like Jim compare to carnival?
@JimZim6 жыл бұрын
It's definitely more. If price is the #1 consideration, definitely look to Carnival. However, if you can afford to pay more to get a better experience, Viking should definitely deserve your serious consideration. A couple of things to keep in mind when making a price comparison... Viking cruises are usually longer than the cruises on other major cruise lines. So, divide by the number of days and compare prices PER DAY, not per cruise. Also, keep in mind all the thing that are included with your cruise fare on Viking, compared to what you would pay extra for on Carnival. For example, good quality high speed Internet service comes included for every passenger on Viking. That will cost you extra on Carnival. Also, to purchase the all-inclusive drink package on Viking is literally one third the price that it would cost you on Carnival. There are probably ten things on Viking that are included, that would cost you extra on Carnival... so make sure you take all that in to account when comparing the two. I still really enjoy Carnival. Two of my next three cruises will be on Carnival, in the Havana area of their Vista-class ships. They offer a tremendous value, and a lot of fun. I'm not going to bash Carnival... I'm a fan. But... one gets to a point in life, eventually, when you can afford to pay a little more to get a little more. A point where "Uptown Funk" played at the pool at high volume is no longer fun, it's annoying. When you get to that point, look at the Havana area on Carnival's Vista-class ships, The Haven on NCL, and Viking Ocean Cruises. If you still think "Uptown Funk" by the pool at high volume is fun, stick with Carnival for a while longer. We all start as fun, young people. Eventually we age. It happens to all of us! Carnival is great, and I still enjoy it. But I also like what Viking is doing. It's a completely different thing, but as a 61 year old guy I guess I am at the right age to enjoy them both.

As you can see, I have a face for radio, not TV... so there's no downside to using a big mic! Seriously, though, the big mic creates a much improved sound... so you can joke all you want about how it looks, but I am never getting rid of that beautiful sounding mic. And use of a CPAP has nothing to do with age or physical decline or anything like that. You don't understand, because you don't have sleep apnea... a serious medical condition that can have a big effect on someone's overall health. I've had to sleep with a CPAP for probably over 20 years now. Without it, my life would be horrible. With it, life is good! A good night's sleep is so important! Anyway, those of us that have to use a CPAP machine at night really appreciate having an electrical outlet next to the bed. But even 20 year olds can appreciate an electrical outlet next to the bed... for charging their cell phone, but keeping it within reach of the bed. Of all the cruise lines I've sailed with (46 cruises, so far) Viking is the best about the simple concept of having electrical outlets and USB charging ports on both sides of the bed in every cabin on every one of their ships.

As someone who's worked in the sleep field, most of the people who end up getting C-Pap machines are in their 30's and I've seen people as young as 16 needing one. Things like the structure of your neck and jaw have a serious impact on sleep apnea.
