*Amber- The reason they blow their clutch is because when launching, the flywheel is spinning at such a high rpm the pressure plate can not catch up fast enough so it gets hot and shreds. This is especially seen in older style clutches. Now we have ceramic pressure plates which handle heat much better. *Katra- When replacing a clutch its ALWAYS best to resurface the flywheel. If it is to worn down you need to replace it. The reason being, the clutch and the flywheel both wear into eachother and develope what is called a wear pattern. If the wear pattern is not correct it will cause the new clutch to prematurely wear. This is also true when replacing disc style brakes. Resurfacing the rotors when replacing the brake pads is always a good idea if you let the breaks wear down to far. I hope this helps everyone understand a little more. Questions? Feel free to email me. Always glad to help.

BEST explanatory video I've seen about clutch until now, I was exactly looking for this kind of instructions. I got the vibration part, but I still have a question though, when we shift up a little sooner (without rev-matching) so the revolution is a little bit down and we force it up by accelerating so the car is more at ease to make it stop vibrating. Well first: What is that vibration and where it come from ? Second: is that harmful ? This is addressed to everyone, whomever know the answer, feel free to share with me. Thanks,

@BearBoulder
@BearBoulder 7 жыл бұрын
The heat is dissipated through the flywheel, what heat there is. If you're heating up your transmission to the point it's a problem, you need to stop driving stick.

So, if you wanted to race, say drag race, you should look into buying a specialized clutch plate with upgraded Torsion Springs that can absorb the high impact of popping the clutch? (Trying to figure out why people 'blow their clutch' on the track during launch)

I still have a key question unanswered from the video, and would welcome anyone who has the knowledge to answer it. When the pressure plate is pulled away from the clutch disc as the clutch pedal is being pressed, why does the clutch disc slide along the input shaft (shown as output shaft in your video) towards the direction of the pressure disc (thus disengaging from the flywheel), when there is no force driving it to do so? Remember all we are doing is to disengage the flywheel from the clutch disc, and the flywheel does not actively pull the clutch disc away from the flywheel. The inertia should keep the clutch disc in contact at least momentarily with the flywheel, thus spinning still with it at the same speed, until the friction is not enough to keep it that way. If that is correct, the slipping friction will wear the clutch disc in this case. But again, what is the reason that you say in your video the the clutch disc is going to disengage from the flywheel (meaning that we create a space between the flywheel and the clutch disc by pressing the clutch pedal)?
@Tro1086
@Tro1086 10 жыл бұрын
There is nothing that pulls the clutch disc away from the flywheel. The pressure plate pressing against the clutch disc is what creates the friction with the flywheel. The pressure plate always spins with the flywheel also, only the clutch disc is attached/splined to the transmission input shaft. When you remove pressure from the pressure plate you remove the vast majority of the friction between the clutch and flywheel. There is no inertia holding the clutch disc against the flywheel, only the pressure plate. Think of disc brakes, there is nothing that pulls the pad away from the rotor when you release the brake pedal, yet if everything is functioning properly there is very little remaining friction between the pad and the rotor when the brakes are released.

A thing I can't figure out - why clutch plate burns when clutch is disengaged (clutch pedal pressed) & gas pedal applied? It seems clutch plate is not in contact with flywheel so why does it burn?
@icyfyer
@icyfyer 10 жыл бұрын
The distance between the clutch and flywheel is 1mm or less, which means that any fluctuation in the tolerance can cause friction. There is also slipping friction when releasing and engaging.

This video made no mention of the Pilot Bearing. HUGE oversight. They even had a finger in the hole at the center of the flywheel where it goes but... NO BEARING. NO MENTION. So, if you're reading this, if you are replacing the clutch assembly, you really should replace the pilot bearing. If you can't pry or pull it out, get a pilot bearing tool, or if you cannot get a pilot bearing tool, there is a novel technique I have used that works. Search "Remove Pilot Bearing" to find videos on KZbin, there are several.
@cadavatar
@cadavatar 9 жыл бұрын
It's common practice to replace the pilot bearing when replacing the clutch, just as it's common practice to replace the water pump when you replace the timing belt. The reason, of course is to avoid the ridiculous expense of going back in and replacing a very inexpensive part that wears down from use, that should have been replaced for a few dollars more while everything was apart. I really shouldn't have to explain this to you.

GymChess depends on the type of car and how hard you drive the transmission. Maybe every other 2 years or so. Not sure. If you dont drive it hard I doubt you would need to replace it that often. Maybe every 10k miles
