There is a big difference between how the scooter belt works and a CVT belt. A "normal" belt pulls from the drive pulley (or sheave) to the output, a CVT belt pushes. As a result the 2 belts are built completely different, a belt that pulls is much easier to make as the tension keeps it running straight, so as long as the internal strands are strong enough, it holds together. A CVT belt has to push straight without buckling, it does this by the drive elements locking into a solid mass when under compression.

there is a difference between engineering and innovative engineering. most true innovative engineering is dead these days. the reason comes down to is "if you have an idea then likely someone else has already come up with it in the past" 95% of engineers typically work off existing systems and designs make small adjustments in order to reach design objectives. there is that few percent that produce something really innovative and unique, that's where the art aspect comes in, and it's rare.

All I really cared to know was how the pulley sheaves moved towards each other and vice versa. All the animations I watched earlier represented them as shape morphing solids, as if being inflated and deflated by air. Of course that's likely not practical. This video explains that well. I'm both impressed and enlightened, and inspired as well. Now that I know how it works, how do the steel plates of the belt not wear as they slide along the moving sheaves? Don't tell me the whole system is bathed in transmission oil.

could you explain cvt's have constant engine rpm while other transmissions have variable engine speeds?
@DJDeathRevenant4 жыл бұрын
They do not, the engine rpm will increase and therefore the sheaves move in reaction changing the 'gearing' and outputting the correct power.
@mohamedlatheef86434 жыл бұрын

@Chook557 жыл бұрын
A simple solution to limiting slippage in a high torque requirement would be to increase the rotational velocity of the input side of CVT gearbox and then gear it down on the output side. Sun gears could easily provide a 8:1 step up and step down ratio. Therefore reducing the torque required to be transmitted via the belt by the same ratio. Of course the CVT gearbox will need to run at very high rpm which may compromise the life of the gearbox. Thoughts?
@jetcarq60488 жыл бұрын
much better design than default gearbox, but bad thing that belt can slide at some point when high torque is applied and pulley is moving

Yes, the concept of the CVT is much more efficient than automatics and manuals. Problem is, all those on the market as of now have issues sizing correctly according to the speed of the engine and driver's foot.
@genius1a8 жыл бұрын
Nice Video, good explanation! Just a little thing: at 2:40 (exaktly at 2:57 ) you state zentrifugal weight movement for the pulleys won't work for automobiles. That is not fully correct, because all DAF 33, 44, 55, 66 and all VOLVO 66 and all VOLVO 343 Versions equipped with CVT worked with centrifugal weight as main shifting mechanism. Powered up to 70 hp they worked like a charm in my experience. They had an additional negative pressure switch to make some shifting control possible (for engine breaking downhills, for accelerating with high engine rpm and for overdrive at medium speeds) but they still drive great when this switch mechanism fails completely.

So all of the power is transmitted by that belt? It would seem that the belt is subjected to lots of friction and wear since it travels up and down between the pulleys? Also the power is exerted on the side of the belt as opposed to underneath like a normal belt/pulley system. How long does a belt last?

@lexsoft39697 жыл бұрын
It uses hydraulic pressure which is supplied by a chain-driven pump. This chain-driven pump is driven by transmission input shaft that is connected directly to the engine's crankshaft. So, practically our actions of pressing and releasing the throttle pedal have final effect on the axial movements of the sheaves.

I can't help but ask this: Why do you not have Staff working with you on this KZbin matter so that the channel video output can be far greater? I mean, the video quality is inexplicably great, but every month or so that I check there are no new videos when there should be for such an already so well developed channel. I am saying this for the fact that other channels such as Learn Engineering are great as well(but not quite as much!) and have very good consistency to help me with my matter that is developing a mass of information prepping me for several future individual projects at my High School.
