Here in the Philippines children are either given Christian or Muslim names like John/Juan or Muhammad for boys. Names like Kaluguran for example are usually reserved for surnames/last names. This is the first time I've seen someone use it as a first name. To me it sounds like "Elton John" (you know John being mostly used as a first name and all.) Oh well, there's always a first time for everything. Keep up the good work! Mabuhay!

Kaluguran as a stand-alone means Beloved. It also means love when used as a verb. For example, Kaluguran da ca means I love you. Mr. David must be a Kapampangan to name her child that way. Tweak the pronunciation a little bit and it would mean 'friend'.

Filipinos in the Philippines still long for anything "American" because its new to them or not commonly seen on a daily basis. Filipinos in the US (like myself) who had left things they grew up with back in the Philippines now misses them so they search for these things. When I took a vacation to the Philippines last summer, I ate nothing but Pinoy food at home and in restaurants, as well as Pinoy fastfood. My brother and nephews who live in Manila flock to Dairy Queen, BK, and McDonald's while I focused on Jolibee and Mang Inasal.

I'm so glad a friend of mine forwarded me this video. I also moved to another freezing place, called Iceland, when I was about his age. I have since considered this country my home, learned the old viking language Icelandic and integrated to the life here. However, like him, I also think it's important not to forget my roots. I'm married to my husband who's from Spain and we were classmates at an international highschool. We named our son 'Lawin', second Icelandic name 'Thor', with a Spanish surname - names are a great way to show who he is and that's what we want. Our son isn't half this or half that, but a whole person with a colorful background. That's why it's also as necessary for us to teach him his four mother tongues: Tagalog, Spanish, Icelandic and English. And we're so proud of him for fluently speaking his languages 💓 I hope more families with a Filipino origin in the diaspora would be more inspired by videos like this. I got here in the U.S. when I was 19 I never thought of trying to change just to FIT in. I guess it only happened in schools here, so diverse. I tell people when they ask... I AM FILIPINO. Take it or leave it, like me or don't. Now I'm 60 years old with diverse friends. My cultural attitude is always with me and that makes me different in a good way which it surprises other cultures. Hello, Doc! You and I have similar stories. My parents have 100% Filipino blood 🩸 but both were born & raised in Hawaii. I, however, was raised on the east coast of the USA (In Maryland). I’ve visited & stayed in Hawaii several times during childhood summers. I always tried to be like my island-born cousins in Hawaii, but my mainland-accent and hip-hop vocabulary always stood out. Then in Maryland, my peers were only black or white. Fast forward to now, I don’t regret any of my past experiences. Thanks to KZbin, I’ve learned about Filipino culture, dialects, food, and even gained some meaningful friendships.

It is NOT the elitist who try to deny their Filipino heritage because having been able to afford to travel and be exposed to foreigners, they are NOT in AWE of foreigners!!! The wife is very pretty. I have also have 3 kids that are half white. They eat Filipino food specially the one I prepare for them as well as my wife loves my cooking. Though the pandemic is a curse to other, it was very beneficial to me as I learned a lot cooking Filipino food at home and at my mom's house. Learned a lot of Filipino recipe and gained even more respect to my mom's cooking and how she fed us home cook daily instead of buying foods from fast food restaurants. Cooking is now my hobby and it's the bridge to my heritage. My kids are happy and healthy with my home cook so that makes me very happy and proud. I can't wait when they grow old and miss my cooking. I hope they visit us all the time like I do to my mom and eat the food that they missed. Also teach them how to cook and prepare them when they have their own family

I love what he said here. Their children are both 100% Filipino and 100% Athabascan! Which is true! We’ve come to believe that when you’re mixedrace, you’re 50-50. Since we label them or give them that kind of measurement, people look at them as less Filipino than other Filipinos, just because they have a parent from another country. When we say they’re half, it makes them feel incomplete, you know? The children have beautiful names. Malakas (in Filipino/Tagalog) means strong; Kalayaan (in Filipino/Tagalog) means freedom; and Kaluguran (in Kapampangan or Pampanggo) has these meanings: i. friend (n); ii. beloved or sweetheart (n); and iii. love someone (vb). Apparently, there are far richer meanings attached to his children's names. They are three of the five themes in one of his books. Malakas - strongly resist the various forms of oppression... You need diacrtical marks on most Filipino languages. Hence: Kálugúran means "friend" in Capampañgan. While, kaluguran, means "love." (Root word is "lugud") They're technically not the same.

I salute Filipinos who teach their children our Filipino culture and the language. Living abroad does not remove our origin even if we embrace the culture being pushed on our throats to be accepted in their society, our being a Filipino will always be there it is in our blood in our veins. many could speak English fluently copy the accent but it will never erase the fact you are a Filipino. I am a proud Filipino.

I also grew up in the states Was born in ilocos norte I am proud of where i came from also Im 100% ilocano Altho i left Philippines when i was 14 that was year 86 have never forgotten how to speak ilocano I will never ever stop speaking in ilocano My first vacation was 05 It makes me sad to feel how i felt when i first went back home Its like i am no longer from there Like im just a visitor I dont recognize the people anymore

I feel this so hard.. I keep going back often now but I went back last year after not being there for 7 years and it really feels like time has stopped and so much has changed. Sometimes I feel like I don't have a home because it feels so much different there and I feel so comfortable where I live in Canada. I've started being more comfortable with my heritage and have been very uncomfortable to talk to people around it but now I'm trying to learn kapangpangan to learn more about my heritage and my roots

@@sophiafaith1000 I can really relate to your story When i left Philippines mostly all the houses are wodden structures Some are bahay kubo made from bamboo The main road were just dirt In 05 a lot have changed All houses are made from cement and big houses Lots of cars tricycle buses Main road are wide and cemented Wooden bridge were replaced by a cement bridge amd wider also The river where we used to swim on was altered due to typhoon 86 to 05 everything have changed

I’ve lived in the US for more than 17 years now and still Filipino by heart, there’s nothing wrong with embracing your culture even when you’re in a foreign country, Americans are more accepting and more tolerant of people’s cultures, contrary to what the media says. We welcome all kinds of culture in America. But just come here legally 😸
