How a German-Palestinian Journalist is bringing Palestinian voices to a German audience.

Here is the final video of my Israel-Palestine project! This was my last video on my last day in Tel Aviv before I headed back home. Meet German-Palestinian journalist Alena Jabarine. I met Alena in 2021 during a conference call when the Israeli-Palestinian war erupted. I could tell right away that Alena truly cared about being a journalist, but it was her passion for human rights and her boldness to speak out on the injustices Palestinians face, that was most inspiring. To openly discuss the Israeli-Palestinian war, one must be brave, but to report on the Israeli-Palestinian war in Germany is to go against the grain; it’s truly a courageous act. I really believe that journalists today do not receive the credit they deserve. In doing so, they put their lives and career on the line. Because of this, I will always speak out on government protection of journalists and preserving the integrity of journalists to always bring the truth to light. I want to personally thank Alena for taking the time to sit with Sadia and me to give us this very thought-provoking interview. This interview shows how the present way of thinking in Germany impacts the reporting on the Israeli-Palestinian war. If we can’t heal what isn’t revealed, then journalism gives us a path to truly heal these generational wounds.

I like her overall nuanced view. It’s important to view everyone as human. I do however think it’s important to not gloss over the journalist at DW as an overreaction or oversensitivity to antisemitism in Germany. It’s important to look at her words and decide for yourself. Some of her posts include phrases like “Israel is a cancer that should be cut out,” or jokingly “I would join ISIS if it was to fight for the liberation of Palestine.” I think it’s normal that Germany’s public broadcaster would find this problematic
