The LeMat revolver was a .42 or .36 caliber cap & ball black powder revolver invented by Jean Alexandre LeMat of New Orleans, which featured an unusual secondary 20 gauge smooth-bore barrel capable of firing buckshot. It saw service with the armed forces of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War of 1861-65 and the Army of the Government of National Defense during the Franco-Prussian War.

They wanted the gun, but wanted it to be more practical than it is iin real life. If players had to reload this gun in full length every time, nobody would ever use it because every other gun has reloads that are 30x faster. To my understanding, they changed the model of the LeMat Revolver in-game to take actual bullet casings (or cartridges) so that it reloads more like the Cattleman Revolver. Although, the shotgun portion is still muzzle-loaded.

In real life you eject and reload all round manually. caharacter in rdr hold the bullets extact and reload the new ones all with one hand other hand holding the gun its not a sim just a arcade game.

To all those (like me) spoiled by quick mag changes, complaining about how long to reload; A- 10 total shots was super high capacity in a time when most had single shot muskets still B- with practice could be loaded as fast as a Navy Colt C- from what I've read mostly officers carried these as last resort/self defense considering they were usually surrounded by their own infantry D- regardless of it's specs now, when it was new, compared especially to other pistols, it was a major force multiplier. If I were alive back then it's the handgun I'd wanna pack PS- I've known about this gun since I was a kid in the 80s, not from red dead lol

It would which is why those who had such guns often had multiple guns. It would have been an officer's sidearm or cavalry, both of which tended to come from the more wealthy of society and could afford the advantage. Even before revolvers came about, cavalry often carried multiple single-shot handguns, several on their person and more on their saddle.

They forgot to show the loading lever breaking off while reloading. Most times the loading arm was removed because it was essentially useless. This is the second model leant, the first model had the loading lever on the opposite side like most of its contemporaries. Much stronger design.

9 rounds makes for a pretty big cylinder. I have one of these bad boys and it's huge and heavy. I think modern revolvers went to a standard 6 or 5 (occasionally 7, much less occasionally more) because it's the optimal configuration to get that many rounds into the cylinder while still retaining a good amount of steel in between them, in an overall smaller package.

They kinda cheated by applying the real life factor of it taking paper cartridges rather than the old fashioned “fill the damned thing with black powder, replace the percussion caps, and ram the round in the damned thing.”. Instead, they put the paper cartridge (which contains the black powder and the ball), then ram it in. I think they skipped replacing the percussion caps on purpose, but then again, maybe in the world of RDR the le mat revolvers have all been converted to contain a firing pin conversion? I don’t know

As a Black Powder Shooter, lemmie tell yall a few things. 1. While this looks almost comical today, this thing was an absolute BEAST. If the terminator showed up two hundred years ago, this is the gun he'd be sporting. 2. Most guns back then could only load a single shot at the time, with the exception of six shooters. So, consider the scale. The average rifle had one shot. The new fangled revolver had six. And this beast had nine that could be loaded at once, with an additional mini-shotgun payload! That's nine rifles and a shotgun all compacted into a single monster. 3. Yes, this would take FOREVER to reload. But in reality, it'd only take slightly longer than loading the average six shooter, and it'd actually be FASTER than loading a revolver and a shotgun separately. In conclusion, this is the pinnacle of black powder revolvers.

i like the lemat. it inspired me to sketch out a philippine version (i'm from philippines) that is conceal-carry chambered in 9mm parabellum, has nine round capacity, with the barrel maybe an inch longer than the original (which is optional) so you can use it at long ranges. my original idea was for it to fire in .45 acp, but it would make the revolver big so i went to 9mm (one of the available handgun ammunition here in philippines that i think is suited for this gun i designed). central barrel is chambered either in 12 or 410 gage.

9mm in a revolver would be highly impractical since 9mm is designed for pistols and revolvers use heavy cartridges since they take longer to load than a pistol, can't hold as many rounds as a pistol and shoot slower than most pistols. .357 Magnum would be a more practical choice as it is literally a 9mm round with a longer case, higher muzzle velocity and more stopping power.

The chamber is so big with 9 rounds that it would be difficult to consider it a conceal carry. That is the reason many gunslingers used 5 or fewer round chambers in their revolvers. Any more than that and it is too large and heavy to carry around and conceal.

So many uneducated folks round here. Y'all need to learn more about 19th century guns. The LeMat is what is called a "Cap and Ball" revolver: the standard handgun type during the 1860s. These revolvers couldn't use modern metallic cartridges, so each chamber had to be loaded individually with black powder and lead bullet (either ball shaped or conical shaped). Load powder and projectile in each chamber and seal them off with beeswax. Each chamber had inserts for metal caps (called nipples) to placed on them, which were needed so the gun's hammer could strike it and ignite the black powder inside the chamber and send the bullet out of the barrel. A popular alternative to loading loose powder and bullet are paper cartridges. These contained the powder and bullet inside a nitrate paper container coated with beeswax. Needless to say they are a lot faster than the former method. Many of these cap and ball revolvers were later converted to use metallic cartridges in the 1870s. The cylinder is replaced with a cartridge cylinder and a loading gate added for inserting cartridges.

To all who remark about its reload time. There's a few reasons why this was so advanced. First of all. I think the shotgun was for emergencies only. You'd save that so if when you run out on the ammo in the cylinders and someone attacks, you then flip the switch and use the shotgun to keep you safe and shoot the attacker. Many I think... think a user would fire all the pistol balls and then also fire the shotgun. Then reload. I don't think it was meant for that. The shotgun was your "ace in the hole" so to speak. Using it this way means you never was fully unloaded at anytime. Next, if you look at the design of the shotgun, it's pretty genius. Let's use Russian roulette as an example. If you spin the chamber with one bullet, you never know when it will shoot. With the design we see here, you always assured that the shotgun is in the center and ready to fire... always! So even if you're unsure of is the next round is loaded or not, you know the shotgun is ready with a flip of the switch. Lastly, people back then carried 2, sometimes 3 or 4 pistols. So they just switched guns when they was out of ammo. So if you had two of these and a rifle, you was a God back then I'm sure lol
