This incident reminds me of a story in the early railway days, when the Maryport & Carlisle railway had their Carlisle terminus unceremoniously demolished in about an hour by another company (L&CR). Happened because the M&CR refused to stop using their terminus once the Carlisle Citadel had been built

This reminds me of an old joke where a rich farmer orders a large chicken coop to be delivered by rail, it gets hung up in a small town and he decides to go retrieve it with a truck and drives off with the whistlestop depot leaving his coop behind in it's place
@ajaxengineco6 ай бұрын
Based on a true story, that happened on the Ravenglass & Eskdale. The farmer had been told his coop would be delivered at one of the stations by a certain date, and sent a boy down to get it. On arriving, he collected the only rickety-looking shed that he could see.... The R&E was not famous for its passenger infrastructure, in those days.
@Tom-Lahaye6 ай бұрын
This happens to many railway stations in South Africa, during the Covid pandemic when almost all passenger train travel was stopped many buildings were looted for building materials, often leaving only the brick walls but roofs, windows etc gone. Also lots of copper including catenary wires were stolen leaving the entire commuter train services in the large cities inoperable, in many cases to this day.

I once witnessed a bold and dangerous railway theft: I was volunteering as a safety officer for a tourist railroad several years ago. When riding in the caboose during an excursion, I saw a man with a crowbar by the tracks. He was pulling date spikes from live, FRA-regulated tracks! We called the local police. As I recall, he was arrested. (That’s how we learned about the date spike theft.)
@dragonblaster-vu8wz6 ай бұрын
I feel like he actually did steal the station. Part of a con is sticking to your story and being consistent. Perhaps he needed some extra money for something, and a friend named Watson came up with a crazy idea given the Mass closures by Beeching. So he used that name as a scapegoat to plant reasonable doubt in the eyes of a jury should he get caught

I opine that they invoked jury nullification to protest the unpopular Beeching Axe. This line of legal argumentation is that, while the bricks & mortar of the station may belong to the British Railways Board, the amenity of the station is a public good and rightfully belongs to the commons. • The council owns the tarmac that covers the surface of a road, but not the right to use that area of land as a road. • The Church of England owns the town's church building, but does not own the parishioners' belief in God and would be stealing from them if it denied them the use of the church for activities relating to the practice of Christianity. • A town park is the physical property of the local authority, but were it to permanently lock the gates of the park, it would be stealing from the residents. Furthermore, if it had acquired the park because the previous owner had bequeathed it "for the public good", as many parks have been, then it would also be violating the estate of the deceased.
