“Where art thou, keeper? Give me a cup of wine.” “You shall have wine enough, my lord, anon.” - Richard III

I thought George was allowed to choose his own method of execution.

Well George betrayed his brother several times before Edward got tired of it. Edward and George and Richard are all 1st cousins 14 times removed. Should have called it the war of the Brothers and Cousins. The Kingmaker is also a distant relative.

Nothing surprises me other than how much cruelty one family could have for another, Treachery backstabbing You name it.. What can be more said about the war of the roses Was there was no low bar.. On how low a person can go on a relative

We need some charts! It's too hard to follow all the actors and deeds with just audio.

Horrific. What kind of mind thinks of how to kill people horribly? Humans really need to evolve. We are dismally cruel.

What evidence exists that George was executed this way? Presumably he was but is it recorded by anyone at the time?
@julzhallmann54114 күн бұрын
True. We should look at contemporary evidence (accounts of him by people who knew him and/or were around at the time, plus documents like his warrant for arrest). We should not rely on a play written by someone writing to please the Tudors a century later.

George had two children.A son and a daughter.His daughter was Blessed Margaret Plantagent Pole who was executed by Henry VIII.Thete is a portrait of her, and she wears around her wrist a ribbon with a charm in the shape of a small barrel, in memory of her father.

Malmsey is a white wine, using red wine to drown someone from the House of York wouldn't have been appropriate. 🙂

The Yorks suck. Edward iv married for love/beauty, George and richard married sisters (their 1st cousins), killed their father in law ( who is also their uncle for being their mom's brother) and fought over their inheritance and then usurped the throne. No matter how pitiful/mad Henry VI was, he made sure his half brothers were taken care of and the beauforts didn't really make a play for the throne until the main lancastrian line was wiped out.

Somebody has made a joke about it : "The duke of Clarence was drowned in a barrel of Malmsey wine -before having clambered out twice to go to the toilet!" Malmsey was a wine that takes its name from Monemvasia on the tip of Greece, long ruled by the Venetians who distributed the wine throughout Europe including England.

I thought you were going to tell me how he actually did it. Something like "he was woke up before first light and trussed up like a Christmas goose. He was then suspended upside down by 2 burly knights, or a rope and pulley. He was then lowered head first into a 50 gallon barrel of wine and left to marinate for 30 seconds then raised back up. He was then tortured by breaking one finger. Then the process was repeated". Not a history lesson on WHY he was drowned that way. You click baited me with that false HOW.

I've read the story and it was kind of like that. He knew his brother was going to drown him in the wine

I rewatched The Hollow Crown over the holidays - The Shakespeare version of Clarence is actually less fun than reality? Although I understand how execution by wine is difficult to portray on stage (or on TV for that matter). Not that I was expecting anything close to reality, but that's definitely not the only thing in this video I don't recognise from watching the relevant plays :)

Apparently several of the Dike of Clarence's retainers tried to rescue him from the butt of Malmsey. However, he successfully fought them off! As the late Spike Milligan woud have said 'An old joke. Told in the original setting.'
