Henry had a very bad habit when it came to his friends and loved ones, Anne Boleyn, Thomas More, Catherine Howard, Cromwell, Wolsey, his mother's first cousin Margaret Pole..... With a friend like Henry who needed enemies.

There was a saying in those days. The closer to the king the nearer your head is to the block.

Being Henry’s enemy had a predictable future, being his friend was likely no different.

In Henry's court you had catholics against protestants,rich against the university educated poor. Each vying to remove the other,this included illegal torture(and without Henry's knowledge). And,like all revolutions(for the break with Rome was a revolution),you had moderates against zealots. It was not all Henry was a monster,etc.

One of very few executions Henry openly regretted.

I believe there was no actual evidence of it taking more than one swipe to take his head off. The only people to claim it was botched were many years after the fact and not witnesses at all

Cromwell knew too much and had outlived his usefulness. Not difficult to imagine such an end.

Thomas Cromwell talked about Henry's ompotence.

Cromwell was loved by the ordinary people. He, Cromwell, never forgot his humble beginnings and he worked hard to make life better for the poorer people. There are many excellent books about Thomas Cromwell. He wasn’t the ogre people like to believe he was. He worked hard for the King and he would do whatever it took to give Henry what he wanted, even bringing about Anne Boleyn’s downfall. He was Henry’s enforcer and a very multi faceted character. I have been a Tudor historian for nearly fifty years. And I have to say, Cromwell is one of my favourite characters.

What did he mean by the statement that he would die in 'the traditional faith'. He had a good relationship with Princess #mary didn't he?
@DBEdwards5 күн бұрын
The man was a covert Roman Catholic at his demise and admitted so despite his agenda as a magistrate for the King promulgating Protestantism.
@heliotropezzz3335 күн бұрын
@@DBEdwards The odd thing is that charges against him, I believe, included trying to impose protestantism on the state i.e going beyond what Henry wanted. Henry was essentially a catholic who just got rid of the Pope as head of the English church. If Cromwell didn't believe in Protestantism did he just pretend to for political reasons, I wonder, or were the charges wholly false?
@redmi98344 күн бұрын
Some of his enemies put it about that he was a Lutheran. A good excuse for Henry to get rid of him if he needed one.

This whole thing is a load of tosh. Cromwell was beheaded on Tower Hill, not inside the tower which was used for very special inmates and Cromwell having everything taken from him it was decided he was just an ordinary person.

Why don’t the Brits rebuild those ruined Abbeys ?? Seems a shame to leave them as shells like that. Think of how magnificent they could be. Look how all the old world artisans and craftspeople came together to rebuild Notre Dame. Certainly the British don’t want to be outdone by the French……………….!

We can't afford it and labour government wouldn't do it anyhow.

It is infuriating. Some were just torn down. The government has money to support illegal immigrants. People would go see those abbey.

Is catholicism even strong enough to support the reconstruction? Frances Catholics are since they did reconstruct Notre Dame quickly(5 yrs).

The catholic church used to be more rich than the state and used to send too much money to Rome. Cromwell was a pragmatic finances guy.
@wednesdayschild36273 күн бұрын
Most of the money went to the poor. Thomas Cromwell just wanted to please Henry. We kniw where that got him.

Henry VIII reminds me very much of Donald Trump. He was clearly paranoid and egotistical and could not abide any opposition to his own opinions. He was descending into lunacy as a result of venerial disease .

So I started watching this video to learn of the unusual execution technique of Cromwell. I didn’t want the man’s entire history. In typical British fashion this video was far too wordy and extraneous.
