Personally, I liked the old lore better. I know, they can tell more stories with Necron dynasties and individualized leaders, but the old lore with the Necrons as these cold, methodical, inscrutable monsters from a forgotten age gave the 40K galaxy a sense of unsettling mystery the other factions mostly lacked. The old lore was more of a slow burn, as you never quite knew what they wanted or why they were moving in. Maybe it's to sterilize the planet, or maybe there's a bit of their old archaeotech sitting in a museum somewhere, and they're gone as soon as they retrieve it, possibly without a single shot fired. Or maybe there's something about left-handed humans they're interested in, and they flatten a city looking for them, but otherwise buzz right off after grabbing their requisite boatload of southpaws. The new lore... Well, like I said, now you can tell stories not just featuring Necrons but _starring_ them, and that's something. But to my mind, under the new lore? They're ultimately just one more group of conquerors, and 40K has never lacked for those.
@DeusExMachina100012 жыл бұрын
It can still be the same tho depending on how you tell the story. Unless you are telling the story from the Cron's perspective, you still never know for sure why they are going to any particular place or doing whatever they are doing. And the majority of them are still inscrutable monsters even if the story is from the Cron's perspective; remember the lower tier Necrons are literally children robbed of personality and put in a metal body. It's just that now you can tell stories from their perspective rather than just having them around to destroy stuff. Szarek, for instance, might be one of the most interesting characters in all 40k. A 60 million year old King who did the best he could with what he had, made major mistakes, had major victories, and ultimately left it all behind because he thought it was the right thing to do.

The issue with Old Crons was that it was basically "What if Skynet was a Lovecraftian God?" Interesting concept but... We already have Tyranids as a "Hive Mind." Necrons lacked the fundamental flaw that other races in 40k have, which is "They can conquer the galaxy if everyone would just not be idiots." I've been waiting for a long time on Necron lore, I must admit, I'm a necron fanboy, I'm honestly curious on the necrons and their super weapons, and who control which, and how do they measure when to use one or not.

I hope you keep doing this for a long time Arch. Your storytelling, combined with a quib thrown in here and there, is really unique and makes listening to you very enjoyable.

Imagine growing up as a poor imperial citizen, suffer through hardship and exploitative labour for years.... and then someone hits the red no no button by accident and awakens a necron "sleeper cell" on that very "paradise" you happen to life on. The excitement and fun you can look forward too will be a wholesome experience for your entire family.

@SamuraiHonor2 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure he has a video detailing that already. It's a pretty well known subject cause it's one of the few things that make tyranids unique. From the genesteler cults sending out beacons and evacuating the planet. Shadow in the warp. Attrition war Ripper swarms Digestion pools And cappilary towers. Was all packed in 1 vid.

Hmm I'm wondering if a neurons might be willing to make alliances with humans and other races in exchange for trade, and perhaps aide to restore their tomb worlds. I mean probably not. Considering that could be very interesting and 40k is often anathema to things that would be interesting, but it's a fun idea.
@bewawolf192 жыл бұрын
If I remember right there is some Necron dynasty that keeps humans as serfs which puts them on the extremely tolerant side of the spectrum, but that is as fair as I am aware of for stuff like that happening.

@@bewawolf19 hm? I am honestly kind of suprised by that. Becuase 40k often goes out of its way to have alien species be stupidly hostile to each other. Even when mutual cooperation would be in their best interests as a species

Can we talk more about how our short term perspective still has no idea what the macro goal is of the Necron is after they wake up and establish their empire? (a state they might not get to given the haphazard awakening) Arch mentioned it was originally to grab souls to feed the Star Gods, but now that no longer makes sense, what is the plan? Was there a plan? Do the shards still need to be fed? Was it an anti Chaos mission? Did it have anything to do with the reason they slept? Was this a way for the silent king to grant himself rest and his people "freedom?"
@toddkes58902 жыл бұрын
The Star Gods are the C'Tan, and the Necrons don't want anything to do with the Warp (they are realspace). Some thoughts about what the Necrons want are to defeat the Tyranid fleets that are still on the way to the Milky Way. The reason the Necrons went to sleep is because there were warp entities (Enslavers) getting loose, and the Necrons didn't like that. So the Necrons went into stasis, while th eOld ONes had to clean up the galaxy from the Enslaver plague. For anti-Chaos, check out the Necron ending for the game "Battlefleet Gothic II"

Fun Fact: The new leagues of votann faction lore says the Votann dislike/hate the necrons because too often when they go digging for precious resources, they run into their tombs which in turn wakes them up and then have to then fight a protracted war against them.

Fan theory: Necrons created a massive banquet of pain and suffering (perhaps laying the ground work for Slannesh, eons later?) bloating their nightmare gods, and allowing their chaining and chattering. The horror might simply have a restorative effect on their alien metal flesh. Micro particles that harvest pain out of the warp.
