I don't normally like retcons, but the Necrons ARE one I actually approve of. It makes each dynasty way more interesting, because their goals aren't so streightforward. It also harkens back to the problem that helped destroy their empire to begin with, infighting. The Silent King's command protocol re-united them in servitude without escape. What happens now that both it, and he are absent? Right back to internal bickering. Perfect!

The Eldar WILL invade worlds, they just won't conquer planets. Usually it has to be something really important for them to dedicate an invasion force (like taking out a sleeping Tomb World, or countering a major threat to them that one of their Seer's has seen will happen in the future if they don't deal with it. Look at the Dawn of War games. While it's before the Necron rewrite, it's accurate about how they operate...though how each Craftworld has their own way of doing things. Would be interesting to see.

Personally, I liked the old lore better. I know, they can tell more stories with Necron dynasties and individualized leaders, but the old lore with the Necrons as these cold, methodical, inscrutable monsters from a forgotten age gave the 40K galaxy a sense of unsettling mystery the other factions mostly lacked. The old lore was more of a slow burn, as you never quite knew what they wanted or why they were moving in. Maybe it's to sterilize the planet, or maybe there's a bit of their old archaeotech sitting in a museum somewhere, and they're gone as soon as they retrieve it, possibly without a single shot fired. Or maybe there's something about left-handed humans they're interested in, and they flatten a city looking for them, but otherwise buzz right off after grabbing their requisite boatload of southpaws. The new lore... Well, like I said, now you can tell stories not just featuring Necrons but _starring_ them, and that's something. But to my mind, under the new lore? They're ultimately just one more group of conquerors, and 40K has never lacked for those.
@DeusExMachina10001
@DeusExMachina10001 2 жыл бұрын
It can still be the same tho depending on how you tell the story. Unless you are telling the story from the Cron's perspective, you still never know for sure why they are going to any particular place or doing whatever they are doing. And the majority of them are still inscrutable monsters even if the story is from the Cron's perspective; remember the lower tier Necrons are literally children robbed of personality and put in a metal body. It's just that now you can tell stories from their perspective rather than just having them around to destroy stuff. Szarek, for instance, might be one of the most interesting characters in all 40k. A 60 million year old King who did the best he could with what he had, made major mistakes, had major victories, and ultimately left it all behind because he thought it was the right thing to do.

Aren't the old lore Necrons still there from an in-universe perspective though? Probably next to nobody in the entire galaxy knows about their dynastic struggles and intentions about wanting to have host bodies once more. From the eyes of a farmer , soldier , admech explorer , planetary governor , Astartes captain ; Necrons are still the same mysterious and cold machines of utter annihilation and bullshit hacks. Just my 2 cents.

One thing to consider about some Necron Dynasties is how fractious they can be. A fringe world Lord wakes up early and decided to carve a small fief for himself, or a particularly ambitious subordinate lord decides to kill his sleeping overlord and take his place. Necrons can be petty like that.

The issue with Old Crons was that it was basically "What if Skynet was a Lovecraftian God?" Interesting concept but... We already have Tyranids as a "Hive Mind." Necrons lacked the fundamental flaw that other races in 40k have, which is "They can conquer the galaxy if everyone would just not be idiots." New Crons have that flaw but GW could have reconned the number of C'tan so there were thousands of them all competing with each other. I agree the new lore is better than the old though.

So can Necron tomb complexes and worlds expand beyond what they originally world? Like for instance a minor resource production fringe world given enough time might expand to a core world and pose an even greater threat or are they limited to fairly close to the capabilities they had previously? I figure you'd be pretty much stuck with the number of warriors you have but they could focus efforts on expanding their infrastructure and production capabilities and could possibly begin constructing void assets, ships orbital stations, etc.

Not really, most Necrons are limited in what they can learn. So you can’t train any new crews for those ships. But the space station with a lot of constructs and a few specialized Necrons to lead them in the construction and expansion of their current facilities.

Each warrior was a civilian when they were properly fleshy and alive. When you kill a Necron properly and prevent it from teleporting away for repairs, it is dead and gone for good. They will not be able to replace it. The Necron humanoid bots are shells for the consciousness of the people. They are not true robots. You kill the consciousness and you permanently reduce their available military.

Fun Fact: The new leagues of votann faction lore says the Votann dislike/hate the necrons because too often when they go digging for precious resources, they run into their tombs which in turn wakes them up and then have to then fight a protracted war against them.

scenario: lets assume for a moment that an imperial excavation unearthed a tomb. guard forces are called they open it up not knowing what it is. little kanoptek spiders come out of the tomb but dont attack leaving the men bewildered. they see the spiders scanning around their surroundings and picking up random rocks presumably metal content rich. the men gather up a team to enter the tomb and witness lifeless husks of machines lining all the walls. the spiders manned a forge that suddenly burst to life further into the tomb and you could see the spiders fashioning limbs and legs and most confusing of all metallic weapons. realizing what they may have found they think it could be some old factory they accidentally activated. going deeper they do not notice the subtle flash of green entering the eyes of the machines lining the wall. they reach the final chamber and see a large tomb door made of stone and two guards protected by a field of blue energy in stasis. just as they were about to turn around the tomb opens and they see a pharaoh like being arms crossed over each other rod in one hand sword in the other. the eyes glow bright green and look up to the interlopers. suddenly the blue fields fade and the machines begin attacking. the machines lining the walls behind them all come to life as they try to rush for the door hundreds of machines blocking their path. the soldiers outside hear the commotion inside and turn weapons raised to see a dark green glow from within. they hear the screams of their comrades dying as they recieve shots of green plasma disintegrating them. the Tomb has Awakened.

I remember in Soulstorm how it's lore that had the Imperial Survey Corps of the local system not been so lazy and corrupt and actually did their jobs properly, the Necrons on the third planet in the system likely would have woken up centuries before before the conflict of the game... and Imperial Scholors cannot decide if that is a sign of divine providence or gross negligence with some dumb luck thrown in.

Fan theory: Necrons created a massive banquet of pain and suffering (perhaps laying the ground work for Slannesh, eons later?) bloating their nightmare gods, and allowing their chaining and chattering. The horror might simply have a restorative effect on their alien metal flesh. Micro particles that harvest pain out of the warp.

Can we talk more about how our short term perspective still has no idea what the macro goal is of the Necron is after they wake up and establish their empire? (a state they might not get to given the haphazard awakening) Arch mentioned it was originally to grab souls to feed the Star Gods, but now that no longer makes sense, what is the plan? Was there a plan? Do the shards still need to be fed? Was it an anti Chaos mission? Did it have anything to do with the reason they slept? Was this a way for the silent king to grant himself rest and his people "freedom?"
@toddkes5890
@toddkes5890 2 жыл бұрын
The Star Gods are the C'Tan, and the Necrons don't want anything to do with the Warp (they are realspace). Some thoughts about what the Necrons want are to defeat the Tyranid fleets that are still on the way to the Milky Way. The reason the Necrons went to sleep is because there were warp entities (Enslavers) getting loose, and the Necrons didn't like that. So the Necrons went into stasis, while th eOld ONes had to clean up the galaxy from the Enslaver plague. For anti-Chaos, check out the Necron ending for the game "Battlefleet Gothic II"
