To be fair, the Winnipeg Jets (who relocated from Atlanta) also had a quick turnaround time in 2011 but they did have a hockey facility for their minor league (they also had a name and jerseys ready to go day one; there were rumours they were going to be the Manitoba Moose after their soon-to-be ex-American Hockey League team and the success of the Canadian Football League's province-wide branding for the Saskatchewan Roughriders but public pressure wanted the Winnipeg Jets name to return).

There most definitely is hockey history in Utah dating to the 70s and 80 with the IIHL and salt lake golden eagles who won two championships and would be replaced by the Utah Grizzlies (IIHF version) who would win the turner cup in the 95/96 season after being relocated to Utah from Colorado do to the Quebec nordiques moving when the IIHF folded the Utah Grizzlies would play in the AHL until 2004 where they would move and a new franchise also called the Utah Grizzlies would join the ECHL in the 04/05 season none of this to forget the 2002 winter Olympics while there may not be NHL history in Utah there most certainly is Hockey history there

@wej4life3 ай бұрын
They didn't need to take the team from Arizona, an expansion would have been sufficient. Utah was almost guaranteed to get a team eventually. This is a unique situation bc Coyotes ownership was that level of bad which made their quick sale necessary and could not really wait any longer. Coyotes franchise could have been sold later on and moved to one of several other places, just that this new ownership group and SLC was best equipped to get the new team going so quickly. Similar in ways to how the Thrashers ended up in Winnipeg within one off-season.

I don't know who would say Phoenix is a desirable city to live in at all, let alone the MOST desirable unless you care about golfing at the expense of everything else, lol. It's too hot to be outside 4 months out of the year, they're running out of water, and the city is choked with car-brained crippled urban design.

Miracle time? There has been several NHL teams that have moved and rebranded in a single off season. Not just NHL, all of the professional sports. Except Utah was the first that "didn't" have the time to come up with a proper name.

@@thedrunkenwobblies1331 not the case OFFICIALLY. @ssvoogel3 ай бұрын
They are an expansion team, not a relocation team. It's more complicated than them just "changing the name". The current Utah Hockey Club has no history in the league. No claim to anything to do with the Coyotes. The players, draft picks and other assets were transferred to the Utah Hockey Club. The Arizona Coyotes franchise, trademark, license and history still exist, but the franchise in active.
@zackyep3 ай бұрын
@@ssvoogel it's essentially the same thing lmao
@Lemonlimegreen3 ай бұрын
It's not. The coyotes owner retained the rights to a franchise in Arizona (which I believe he renounced). This was an entirely new organization that acquired all of the Phoenix Coyotes but not their history or spot in the league.
