How a Poor Kid from Brooklyn Made Starbucks

Decades ago, few Americans knew what coffee was, and some thought it came from a can. But a small retailer from Seattle changed that and later became the biggest coffee house chain in the world: Starbucks.
While the company was founded by three friends, it wasn’t them who transformed Starbucks into a $100 billion-dollar company that serves 4 million drinks a day.
It was an outsider: a poor kid from Brooklyn who just graduated from high school the year that Starbucks was born.

I find it ironic how back then macy's was the biggest retailer and perhaps one of the most influential businesses that brought us modern day shopping and Starbucks was nothing special, but now in present day starbucks is now one of the most successful businesses out there and macy is about to run out of business. Quite amazing and sad actually

Howard Schultz is my main man. Wrote a paper in Grad School about his life, philanthropy, ideologies, and his impeccable level of emotional intelligence.. A great story to share with those who work or aspire to work in managerial roles. What I got from Mr. Schultz is the importance of treating the people who work “with you” with a high level of respect and integrity.. Super business man♥️

As a kid about 7 years old (1964), my mother will make coffee ; using grounded coffee beans. Place the grounds into cloth bag(specially made) and pour boiling water. Then she would boil the milk (leche in spanish) and pour into the black coffee. That's how Puerto Rican made the coffee. Expresso coffee was popular with the elders.

My father started his car his day every day with a cup of coffee. Did everyone I know had their own coffee maker. Coffee was not only Served every morning at breakfast it was also served after dinner. Especially if you have guests. Everybody I know had a percolator in the 60’s and 70’s and made their own coffee and nobody drank Instant at least that’s the way it was in California 50 years ago. The convenience of getting a good cup of coffee in the middle of the day, really any time of day, is what made coffee shops profitable. I still start every day with a cup of coffee.

It is a quaint little story about a poor mom that sent her only son to the marketplace with their last possession -- their old cow -- to get some money to buy some food. But instead, the little boy traded the cow for some magic beans (that turned out to be coffee). His mom scolded him and threw the magic beans out the window, but in the morning there was a giant coffee bean stalk that grew right up into franchise heaven. And they all lived richly ever after. They even bought back the old cow for a cheap source of fresh cream! End of story.

the reason why people spend more than 7 dollars in a coffee is because of brand and the wifi starbucks has had a great reputation in years including brand, modern establishments and dont forget the quality of a product, if you order a caramell frapuciono in a country or any continent, it woul be the same,, the quality is one big reason why people pay sooooooo uch for a mothertrucking cup of coffee......

Could have saved yourself the walk and gone to the second location located INSIDE the original Starbucks.

They were so wrong about how much people would pay for coffee. A tall latte w/o foam is my favorite Starbucks drink. What isn’t my favorite thing is Starbucks employees ignoring and then refusing to serve a member of our law enforcement community. SB is standing on shaky grounds with this customer!

I go to 7-11, get a cup of decaf, a good morning greeting and a smile all for $2.10 . You're lucky if they even smile. Maybe it's me because I'm short.

@@antonioramos8804 I’m short too. No 7-11’s around us anymore. They’re getting rid of all of the places people used to rely on and the new isn’t always better!!
