I have been working with teleprompters since they were CRT monitors -- heavy and very expensive (and truth be told, the first prompters I used were video cameras, pointed down over a conveyor belt that held a printed, hard copy version of the script -- and editing meant using scissors and tape. No joke. I am old). My favorite system is using bullet point, not the full script. Our current prompter was around $200 and was worth every penny.
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
It's wild how much things have changed over the years! MY first job was at a local TV station where we had big Gian CRT prompters (no conveyor belts though haha). And I agree that bullet points really do help things sound the most natural 👍

Just picked up the Parrot Padcaster. Prompter. Cost about $100 and comes with a Bluetooth remote that controls the free parrot app. Filmed an unboxing but I suck at unboxings so I scrapped it. Biggest issue as you mentioned is reading the scripts that I write myself and figured out quickly that I don’t write the same way I speak. The best tip I have is to write like you write social media posts. It’s less formal and more...you!

Hey Tom. Just bought this teleprompter! Glide Gear actually has used ones “like new” for sale through Amazon for $40 less than the new price, so I got it for $159! Thanks for the heads up on this unit as I’ve looked at a ton of reviews and most have serious issues one way or another. Once I receive I’ll grab the app as well, seems like the developer really listens to customers and fixes problems quickly, and the apps have a lot of issues too, so might as well go with a known positive. Congrats again on your milestone for sub’s! Cheers.

That's a good tip about writing for a teleprompter. Some people feel like they can't speak "naturally" if they're reading something that's been written down ahead of time. But it's often the case that the script is the issue.

It’s pretty simple overall- the phone or tablet just rests in the little tray under the mirror and you can position it so that’s it’s most comfortable. Men you did a better job than me explaining everything lol.. something else... The app with the phone or tablet is not that good after 5ft of distance. What I did was, I got a 3.5mm Male to 3.5mm Female Stereo Audio Extension Cable to connect my Rode Video Mic Pro and then connected that to a 3.5mm Stereo Female to 2-Male Y-Splitter Audio Cable and to a Rode SC4 3.5mm TRS to TRRS. I have tried a MOVO TRS to TRRS brand but the fitment wasn't right all the time so I got the RODE brand and that one worked fine. Thanks for the video, Tom! So that's your "secret" weapon?! LOL! Actually, I also sometimes use a prompter too. I've been using this very compact Padcaster Parrot Teleprompter V2 that simply fits over my Canon lens and works with a simple smartphone to display the scrolling text. But what's cool about this model is that it comes with an included compact remote controller that will play/stop the video, increase the scroll speed faster or slower, and even rewind back to the beginning. But it's not voice activated though. I'm sure your prompter works great, but this Parrot model only costs $99 and is extra compact. I've been using it for the past 2 years and it works great. I noticed it's best to use a relatively smaller size phone screen such as no more than 5" in length, otherwise if too large the prompter will crop off the sides. I might end up getting the same prompter you have in the future though, cuz my eyesight vision isn't 20/20 anymore so a larger prompter screen might be a necessity for me in the future, haha! Here's a link to the Parrot Teleprompter on Amazon for only $99 (used to cost $150 in the past): www.amazon.com/Parrot-Teleprompter-Portable-Smartphone-Control/dp/B01MS0E9WE/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=parrot+teleprompter&qid=1605901973&sr=8-4

Since the A6400 has a crop sensor, 16mm will be pretty comparable to the 24mm I use on a full frame sensor. I don’t think you’d have any issues getting the prompter in frame, especially since you can move the camera forward and backwards to adjust it. That being said, GlideGear is pretty active on Instagram. If you send them a message, they’d likely be able to confirm for certain. 👍

Been thinking about getting one of these for a while now. The main issue I'm seeing is not being able to see the flip-screen on my EOS R while filming. I can set up my Sennheiser or Rode shotguns as boom mics to get around the hot shoe mount being hidden by this giant setup, and I'll be using my Sigma.14-24 Art Lens for taking some of the crop out of 4K, and that'll put me right up close to the camera so that, with luck, I'll be able to see the text on my phone and still not be too obvious about trading from a prompt. Very seriously considering this (these) item(s) now! Thanks for the review.

2 years later i’m back! Are you still suggesting this prompter in 2022? Would like to buy one without breaking the bank :)
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
It's a good prompter (I mean, it's just metal and glass so there's not much that can go wrong). That being said, you might want to check out the Padcaster. It's a much smaller prompter that just attached directly to the camera's lens. I haven't used it myself, but people say nothing but good things about it and I'm really curious about it.

@@tombuck Thanks Tom. I ended up buying this one as it was on sale on amazon (uk) and the parrot was too small for my setup (I'm using a 50mm). Excited to try this out!

IMHO, Parrot Padcaster is better if you are doing talking head video where the camera is within your reach. It takes seconds to set up and you still have access to your flip-out screen.

Hi Tom, I got a Sony ZV-1 and I just buy the Glide Gear TMP100 and we clearly see my iPad, is it something I can do to avoid it?

Be sure that the black cloth is as covering the ZV1's lens as much as possible so no light is getting through, and then push the camera as close to the class as you can to avoid reflections.

Hey Tom, thanks for all your great work on these videos. If im having issues with my eyes tracking left to right, is the easiest thing to just move further away from the promoter? Any advice on this?
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
It would definitely be a good idea to experiment with distance from the prompter. A lot of it can come down to the individual, some people's eye tracking is more noticeable up close while it's more noticeable from far away for others. It's also why I do like using the phone instead of the tablet, to keep the text closer together.

Thank you SOOO MUCH for talking about this!!! I was wondering about this...I got on a kick a little bit ago where I kept hearing ‘teleprompters are the way to go!!!’ So, I made one. Obviously, it was homemade and shitty, so I ordered one to attach to my lens. Well, on the 24mm, it showed the far edges of the teleprompter. So I got frustrated with that! Did I ever actually WRITE a script and try it? Ummm...NO!!! I guess I should actually TRY it. 🤦♀️ Thanks for giving us a good overall heads up! Geez...I wanna be in YOUR class! Question: Could someone use a teleprompter to display questions/comments better for live. So then you wouldn't have to brake eye contact while on live. But I guess a small tablet would do the same.
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
Yes! They also work great for video calls where you want to look directly at the person you’re talking to. The tricky part is finding a display that has a mirrored mode so that everything isn’t backwards. Most small camera monitors have this ability 👍

Does anyone have any suggestions for voice tracking teleprompter software for the Android that doesn't require a monthly/yearly subscription? It says PromptSmart is $30 a year, but I'm looking to buy... I avoid subscriptions like the plague. Thanks

Can you still see yourself in frame, can a flip out screen still be seen?
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
The prompter blocks a flip out screen, so you would need to mount a little camera monitor to be able to see yourself. Since I use Ecamm live a lot for streaming and stuff, I typically just have my camera running through my computer as a display

Very detailed review man 👌🏻 do you think it can be used with a 20mm on a full frame sensor or is it too wide?

The widest I've used is 24mm and I think that's pushing it. However, you could easily crop in on your shot if part of the prompter does get in the way 👍

*I HAVE A COUPLE QUESTIONS* where do you get the tripod with it? I have a Canon 70D DSLR camera.. does any tablet work for it or does it need to be a certain size... for the teleprompter app, is there a way to manually scroll if the voice recognition doesn't work
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
The prompter will mount to nay tripod, but it's fairly heavy, so I'd recommend a nice sturdy one. Any tablet or phone that's about the size of the 10.5 iPad Pro or small should work. And yes, you can set the app to scroll continuously or adjust it manually. I think there's also a paid feature that lets you use another device as a remote for it (so if you're using you iPad as the prompter, you can use your phone to adjust it).
@JoaquinLomeliJr4 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck is there a way to adjust the screen to make sure the letters are directly in front of the camera so it looks like you're looking at the camera. I heard some reviews that the letters sometimes are not centered to the camera and it looks like your reading, looking off to the side.
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
It really just depends on how you position your camera's lens and the tablet/phone. I do prefer using my phone since the smaller display focuses my eyes more directly towards the lens and reducing back and forth movement as I read.
@JoaquinLomeliJr4 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck ahhh okay so you have noticed that issue as well on the appearance of reading something? So what are your thoughts then on the Parrot Teleprompter from padcaster? Please do a video on how you can shoot with multiple Cameras. There are many who tell you how BUT, none explain IF you need 2 capture cards for live streaming. Do you need 2 capture cards is the question for 2 DSLR Cameras or 3 cameras 3 capture cards etc?? Pls Help... Thanks Mr.Poseidon
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
There are a few older videos on my channel about the Broadcast studio I built in my classroom, and once about graduation live streams that cover most of the details. The quick answer for using multiple cameras is to invest in a video switcher (the BlackMagic ATEM Mini is the least expensive option). You'll connect your cameras to the switcher, and then you only need one capture card for the switcher into the computer. 👍

Hey Tom great video. Was wondering: Since you use a phone with your teleprompter (to make sure the text stays within the camera lens), couldnt you get by with a much smaller more compact teleprompter like the Desview T3? I've read alot about this kind of teleprompter and its much more compact then the GlideGear and it seems to clip on to the camera mount. However, I'm a bit concerned with that cause of the possible pressure it can cause to have the teleprompter, phone/tablet, and microphone or other accessories on the cold shoe mount hanging onto the lens mount. Just wondering if you had given this any thought?
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
That could definitely work, but like you mentioned, I do like the stability of this one. And sometimes I like to use a small monitor with it for Zoom calls and the larger size comes in handy for that 👍
@ne0nlightz3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! Do you have a video of you using the external monitor with the teleprompter? I dont think I saw it but maybe I missed it. Do you use some kind of HDMI switcher to flip between seeing people to using the teleprompter at the same time?

@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’ll block the cable, but if it does, there are many little mounts and risers you can buy for under $10 that would lift the camera up and solve the issue.

Yes! It actually works out great! The trick is to use a small camera monitor as the display for it, because camera monitors have built in options for mirroring and flipping, which most other displays don't.

Hi Tom. By chance, might you know if the Glide Gear teleprompter can fit the Canon Vixia G60 camcorder? (which has a built-up lens). Also, what teleprompter app are you using with the Glide Gear? Is it the app that is voice activated? If so, does the app work without glitch? Thank you!

@@tombuck Thank you much, Tom! I'm thinking to upgrade from my Padcaster Parrot Teleprompter to a larger unit such as the Glide Gear which is double the size larger. I'm just a little bummed that the app you are using is available for $19.99 as a one time fee for only Apple IOS. But for Android OS which I'm using, the app maker only offers monthly subscription fee for $3.99 per month. Makes me almost want to (gulp) buy a used iPad mini, LOL! Or maybe just pay the monthly fee for the app for my Android device.
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
Haha, I iPad mini could be perfect and might potentially work as a second display for things like Zoom calls on the promoter.
@caseyonlocation82573 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck For starters, I just signed up for the monthly subscription fee for $3.99 using my Android phone with my old Padcaster Parrot teleprompter. I'd say for the most part, the PromptSmart Pro app works well about 90 percent of the time. But for the other 10 percent of the time, it's not scrolling when it should. For whatever reason, after I finish a few sentences, the app will simply stop and not scroll to move onto the next sentence. But after a few re-takes, the app will finally move again. This has happened a number of times. I even tried connecting a Movo LV1 external wired lav microphone from the phone to and have the mic connected closer to me (so the app can hear me better), but the problem persists. The camera is only 4 feet away from me in a quiet room, so I can't explain why the app simply stops scrolling sometimes. Does that ever happen to you??
