The funny thing about Korea is that most of its presidents were convicted and sentenced to 20 years in some cases, but most of them were pardoned and freed after a couple of years.

Bureaucratic corruption is deeply ingrained in Korean culture. Look up Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the hero of Korea who was repeatedly punished by officials whenever he got too popular. He fought 23 naval engagements against the invading Japanese in overwhelming odds, and won all of them. One time he refused to follow official's orders into an ambush, so they demoted him, took his fleet away and gave it to another commander. The fleet was wiped out.

Actually, that's almost everywhere, every king was afraid to put solid power in a general's hands. Just look at the very early empire of China, Qin, the first emperor killed General Bai as the old man was very great ,holding big power and having big influence. Not to mention the emperors followed up, they took the same road. However, there were no less stories of ministers and generals took the power from kings and emperors. The actual history is full of corruption, suffering, scheming, degeneracy. / I wanna laugh whenever I see stories about going back to ---- years as protagonist had tired of modern life. Not to mention, slavery and low life class which nobels could kill them at will at some dark ages.

Sounds bad… but not as bad as my home country, Honduras. First the President’s brother was arrested for drug trafficking. This year, the now ex-President was arrested for drug trafficking and corruption. The cartel backed gangs are totally out of control, the police, the politicians and the military are all being bribed. Layers upon layers of corruption.

This video is only looking at it from one point of view, but as a Korean, to describe the story in a little more detail, there are two positions in Korea. There is a position similar to the one in this video, but there is also a position that she is merely a victim of political retaliation. Her people were outraged and protested against her because circumstances were discovered that made her president appear to be her puppet, such as Choi Soon-sil, an unappointed woman editing the president's speeches. There was no legal justification to punish or impeach her in the Korean law, so she was impeached on the pretext of soliciting a bribe. However, as there was no evidence that she had attempted to take her bribe, she was charged with tacitly soliciting a bribe, and, as the word 'implicit', sparked a lot of controversy in the legal world. The Progressive Party regime, which took office after her impeachment, indicted the former regime on a large scale for political retaliation close to a purge, which drew public backlash. Afterwards, even though evidence of corruption in the progressive party government was revealed, the people were outraged by the progressive party, who desperately defended it. For the first time in history, breaking the precedent of being replaced by a 10-year cycle the government was replaced by the Conservative Party after five years. She was accused of accepting tens of millions of dollars in bribes, but after the pardon, she had no money left to buy a house, let alone enjoy the wealth she had accumulated through bribes. Her supporters provided a home for her to live in.

Very true, more of error in judgement and trusting wrong people in her part. People who ousted her went to great lengths up to recovering Chois pc in Germany to that discovery of her speeches shared to Choi but no proof of her talking and taking money from Choi. There was no actual proof that she have received or pocketed anything under her name. The recorded donations are to charities no more than 60million usd and these are samsung, LG, hyundai and can donate billions like its nothing. As to exchange of favors allegation, at this point of time with that power and hold samsung and lg to the world will they still need to bribe someone? So unfortunate of her to be surrounded by people who did petty crimes for small gains and that this friendship was used to involve her.

Many comments here seem to view this kinda negatively but as a Korean born American I view this somewhat differently. I believe that as long as there are government and money corruption will always be coexisted within its society. Yes we all want to get rid of corruption but its nearly impossible to do so cuz money (or power)move society. Having said that I think Korean people are doing exceptionally well to uncover the corruptions within its country and punish whomever is part of the corruption. From outside you might think Korea is full of corruptions and its depressing etc but really its better than letting corrupted people maintaining its power thus make your country looks clean from outside view. I believe there is no other country in the world that democracy/ transparency works better than in Korea tbh. To add, yes chaebol is another problem in Korea but its something that we cant really get rid of quickly cuz as a small country with almost no natural resources those big conglomerates basically help this country getting wealthier. Hope they would find a balance tho.

To suggest SK is the epitome of democracy is truly ludicrous. The country has plenty going for it, but their government is not its strongest suit when just about every president has been prosecuted and found guilty of corruption and given a prison sentence.
