I believe him. I was bowhunting in the forest in New Zealand at Christmas last year. I got off the track and I only went up and down a few valleys and hills and I was hopelessly lost. It was so steep and rugged that each hill I crawled up on my knees looked the same and I couldn't see anything for the tall trees. I was praying like mad, because I had no water, no supplies and nobody knew where I was. It was truly terrifying and I really thought that I could perish out there. It was only that I had my mobile phone on me and it registered a tiny blue dot of where I was, I was able to use that to see my position and navigate my way out. I was miles from where I was supposed to be, but eventually found my way back to the car. Sitting back home in my warm house in Australia now, I have a new healthy respect for the bush and forest and just how easily one can be disoriented and eventually perish

@@PoeLemic Yes you are correct. I hadn't told my family where I was. The forest in NZ is very thick and isolated and i was in the middle of nowhere - I don't think anybody would have found me or been looking for me. I was an idiot, but praise God I was given another chance.

I got lost in a forest in Ireland, went up the hill to see the lake then decided to walk in a circle and towards the forest where I was staying...and then, it started snowing and everything looked the same. I felt like Hansel and Gretel and walked for 4 hours!!! Not sure how I found my way back in the snow and that was before mobile phones!!

At that time of year water is pretty easy to find. There's actually quite a few water sources in the valleys , so much so they fill a large lake, fill three dams and a big creek.

I've gone bushwalking through those same forests. It is very easy to lose the trail, especially if there's anything less than full daylight to see by. Water at this time of year isn't hard to find, and with so much rain in recent times there would be plenty of water pockets and little streams out there to find. He probably could have survived a few more days without food, any little bit of bush food he found - and there's a lot of that out there too if you know what to look for - would have helped a lot. As for the cold, yeah he absolutely would have suffered but it would have been a little bit easier for him to survive that being from and acclimated to a colder climate to begin with. He was most likely walking in circles, that's completely normal for lost people to do, so his reappearance being not too far from where he disappeared 12 days earlier isn't surprising either. There's nothing about his story that is so unbelievable as to warrant calling it a hoax.

All of the doubters can say all they want. They weren't there with him. It's a great lesson on the resilience of the human body and the young man's strength of will to survive. He resolved to eat bush tucker to keep himself somewhat nourished and was quick to work out the need to make some form of shelter and to keep himself hydrated to increase his chances of being found and survival. Respect to him, heartfelt relief for his loved ones and a big thumbs down to the naysayers.

I’m unsure why people doubt his story. If you you were going to go missing this is a good environment to try and survive.plenty of resources. It’s green that s likely plenty of water. Trees, shrubbery for shade and to make a shelter. Although cool the weather pretty optimal stayed above freezing. If he had the same supplies but in a dry, barren hot desert then 12 days would be beyond challenging if not impossible especially for a novice outdoorsman.

I got lost and I am an Australian and knew the area very well. It was just that I took the wrong track only to realise down the bottom I knew only then I was in the wrong spot but it was getting dark so I stayed where I was. Lit a fire, made some soup and was amazed that the chopper found me that night when I told family a I would be back home by 8pm.

Older British bloke, it's not all that uncommon for them to come across that way. Some older Aussie blokes are the same way. Their pragmatism comes across as callous and cold, but underneath it all the ol' man would have been hurting so badly when he thought he lost his son that he would have been overwhelmed to the point where it numbed him too much to show much of anything. That's just the way some older blokes are. They care deeply, sometimes more deeply than those that wear their heart on their sleeve, but they have a lot of trouble showing it.

It makes total sense to me, this guy wasnt aware of the dangers because he hadnt done any real recon or planning. He arrived he took off for a hill walk and forgot he wasnt at home. He is showing his ignorance of the country he strolled into but he is admitting that he made a huge mistake and would be deemed to be a bit of a tool for going off like that without any planning and have to face his piers when he gets back home. Being from the UK a much smaller country, he would be used to going to wooded areas that come to an end quite quickly and you can see distances more readily climbing to hilltops and are easier to manage in general. Summer or Spring you dont need lots of equiptment other than your water and some food and a backpack if you plan on camping. Unless you go out in Autumn or Winter and need some winter equiptment because there isnt massive extremes in temperatures and unlike Australia it isnt vast. Even if you go to colder parts of the UK you wouldnt have to deal with the thick vegetation and plantlife, the vast distances and the impenetrable overhanging canopy of trees. Being naive isnt an excuse but he clearly was and forgetting to bring basic equiptment tell people what he was doing, go in a group and of course bring a phone was life threatening in Australia. Australia has a lot of animal and plant life that the UK wouldnt have, it has extreme temperatures and a vastness that is almost impossible to imagine unless you've been there. This is a lesson to anyone else who visits from smaller countries thinking its the same, only just a little bigger and should be included in the tourist warnings on websites offering trips for young people taking a year out and travelling.

I was raised in the mountains here in the state of Oregon USA. I was literally raised in the woods and living off the land isn't hard if you know what you're doing. That said, when I go hunting or prospecting or just out fishing, I let my girlfriend know where my camp will be and the area where I'm hunting/prospecting. I've always got the means to (easily) make fire and and a bit of high energy snacks. This kid is lucky, he could be dead just like a thousand others that weren't lucky. Unless you know what you're talking about, stop talking. He made it out alive, that should be celebrated not sneered at. Just as there were thousands of people that weren't lucky, there's thousands that were. He's one of the lucky ones. Kid should by a lottery ticket the second he gets home.

Research Anthony "AJ" Elfalak the little 3 yr old boy who was lost in the bush for over 3 days and Steven Walls who was also lost in the bush for days as a 4 yr old. Both were found alive despite the odds.

I certainly believe him - from the blood tests etc he clearly did survive. He is from near me in North London and although he was not prepared he is a boy and he is 19 years old (probably the strongest age you can be as a person) and you can tell from things he said that he understood some of the points about survival, shelter, food sources and he knew about leeches and even had knowledge of trench foot so he is not a useless as some young people from towns can be. Many thanks to Australia for looking for him and helping him in hospital. he is actually lucky it was quite cold and wet as it is lack of water that kills people off fastest. I presume he is post A level and on a gap year before university (probably starting his studies in the UK in September). Good luck to him.

You did a water fast in the comfort of your own home. In survival, after 3 to 4 days without food, it becomes significantly more difficult. Your mental capacity goes down and you lose the strength to effect further survival and it gets worse with every passing day. The caloric burn to push through rough terrain, heavy brush, etc, makes this problem grow even more quickly. Then there's getting through the cold nights, which consumes even more calories, continues to exacerbate the issue yet further. The arrogance to even think you could compare your comfortable, safe, water-fast to going without food in rough wilderness is just astounding. Judging by your age if your profile pic is indeed you, it makes sense. Your generation are the best at armchair quarterbacking.

When I attempted to go bushhiking in the remote Tassie, I was warned to register with the SES. Many places are so densely forested, and you need to be supplied food and water in case of emergency. We tend to overlook the harsh reality of mighty nature easily. Be prepared.

@@desertgirl1392 there's a whole lot of emotions a person would experience in those circumstances. Eg anger " why is no one looking for me!" Despair, " why has God forsaken me!" Fear, " This is it. I'm going to die here!" When people recount an actual experience, the emotions they felt at the time is written on their face and you can hear it in their voice. Anyone who'd been tracking through dense vegetation for a fortnight would be covered in cuts and scratches.

He wasn't wearing shorts and t-shirt, the clothing he had would have been more than enough to protect him from scratches, and the plants in that area aren't overly terrible to begin with. Some people get lost and go all "oh woe me" traumatic about it, and some decide to not let their emotions and fear get the better of them and just do something about it.

When a person recalls details of an event, they inadvertantly display the emotions they felt at the time of the event. Recollections of real events have unexpected details. His story was thin on detail. For example, someone in that situation may tell you about meeting a possum and thinking about killing it for food, but not being able to go through with it. People who have looked death in the eye, usually express a spiritual perspective. I've spent the last year clearing bushland. I always have at least half a dozen visible injuries at any given time. I'm living it. He's making up fairy tales.

This is the problem, Aust bushlands and wild places are reputed around the world to be harsh and inhospitable. Never the less people still come here from abroad with a complete disregard for it. If you grow up in the Redwood Forests and hiking around our Alps you get to where you are not lost for the most part. You develop things, even many years ago, (my first GPS was gotten in the 90s. You develop ways to use radio. My latest plan is, if the chips are down, I will have the helicopter direct frequency in my radio. They will fly over me and hear me call them. All this takes pre planning. That said, I looked at him in the hospital and I can see why there are skeptics. Bushwaking is brutal to the body and he looked like he had been in his girl friends apartment the entire time ! That said, he would have had to be pretty cagey to walk into a camp 9 miles from where he went in and tell them he was lost. So, ok, quite the miracle ! That said, if I hadn't been ready, when I took the advice of a ranger the first time I went up Pack Saddle Ridge where MANY people had died looking for those Japanese Favorite Mushrooms, I would have been added to the list !
