I had a toaster bought (@ $6.99) 19 years ago. The middle heating element burnt out. So I dismantled it.This had very simple, almost foolproof, thermal/mechanical pop up mechanism. Electrical function was limited to only the heating element. No electronics, no electromagnet. That is why it survived so long.

There are foodservice toasters that have a conveyor mechanism, so there is no electromagnet involved. Other than that, there is little different with the mechanism.
