How a windscreen is manufactured - National Auto Glass

Over the last few months, aBr Magazine has covered a series of articles on the importance of fitting a windscreen correctly and how to repair windscreen chips. In this issue and the next, we will focus on the windscreen manufacturing process.
Windscreens first appeared around 1905 as cars started going faster and faster. These first windscreens were made of annealed glass which shattered on impact causing much injury. Eventually it was replaced by windscreens made of laminated glass-a multilayer unit consisting of a plastic interlayer surrounded by two sheets of glass. In all countries today windscreens are required by law to be made of laminated glass. Laminated glass can deflect slightly under impact, wont shatter like annealed glass and prevents penetration of the glass by flying objects. These qualities reduce the risk of injury to the car's passengers.

To be effective, the autoclave must reach and maintain a temperature of 121° C for at least 30 minutes by using saturated steam under at least 15 psi of pressure.

why a screens made that do not comply with australian law in regard to the amount of tint that is allowable thhe top 10% I am a country driver and i find some windscreens dangerous on hilly country roads as at night you cannot see where the road goes when you are going down a gully?

This is laminated windscreen. It has PVB layer between the layers of the glass.

Bill Shannon well I came here wondering why it's hard to get a windscreen for my 98 Ek3 Civic. Cutting the windscreen is not the issue, it's getting the mold to bend the glass into the desired shape. There are different molds for different vehicles and models. so once that particular vehicle model is no longer being manufactured, it's bye bye mold.

Call Eddie Kotto at Kotto glass. They make the glass for custom cars. There are other shops too. Probably all the west coast.

My God, this is obviously some third world country where this glass is being processed or this video is old as hell. Humans don't remotely handle the glass this much during the manufacturing process. Most of the handling is done with robotics.

I am sure you are aware that we speak UK and not American English in South Africa. The English refer to it as a windscreen. There's a huge difference. No need to be condescending, and, to some extent, overtly racist. Give your country away to the????
