As someone from England who grew up with roundabouts, they are very safe and easy to navigate IF you understand the rules and get in the correct lane. In Edgware where i lived it has a 3 lane roundabout; no problem. In the U.S. I have lived through NJ circles and Massachusetts rotaries, both demolition derbies. For me the most frustrating thing is drivers not using indicators approaching and while in the roundabout. In fact almost all of the KZbin instructional videos don't mention indicators.

As an American living in France I am surprised we haven't used them a lot more stateside. They are so much more functional as it is so well pointed out in this video. I was thinking of starting an engineering firm to promote this idea in the states and I am just glad that it is now being used. One other huge advantage it has that isn't mentioned on the video is that it is so much cheaper to maintain than the traditional 4 way stops seen around the country. You don't have any electricity costs that you have at stoplights and you only have to maintain the grass or flowers which are in the island itself. For all those cities across the states that are hurting fiscally it is a NO BRAINER! Once you use them a bit they are super functional as an American currently living in France can attest! Viva le roundabout!!!

I live in Austin, Texas. A 2 lane roundabout replaced the traffic lights at southbound I-35 frontage road and 51st Street and it has been a godsend. Traffic congestion is now non existent because of that roundabout.

I'm all for roundabouts like these, with a fairly large center island. Many I've seen though have a tiny center island (~10-15 foot diameter) and are dizzying to get through, and downright impossible for larger vehicles...

There is nothing 'modern' about roundabouts other than UK local authorities putting traffic lights on them and ruining the original intention. Ho hum!

About the 10 minute mark of this video it shows making a right turn from the center (traditionally left) lane. What happens if a car is parallel to them in the outside lane. Who has the right-of-way? Seems like a big conflict.

Xinthose This is a logical conclusion, but doesn't answer the right-of way question.
@nicholascopeland5027
@nicholascopeland5027 9 жыл бұрын
Dan, to answer the obvious...you don't make a right turn from the center lane. You only go in the center lane (on a two lane roundabout) if you are going straight or left. AND if someone does have an accident it is much less disasterous as everyone is going much slower than our usual 4 way stop or 4 way light system. Hopefully that can answer that...As an American in France (southwest) I feel like an expert on this subject as I am in the daily

+Dan Kirk the way you enter a roundanbout means you went when it was clear for ya to do so, you should never find yourself with some1 parrallel to you, if you do then they must be speeding like mad to make up the distant.. traffic just flows natural round them, hard to explain it really.. we have some big big roundabout here with traffic lights half way round.. but thats maybe for the fututre in the US lol

There are two rules for negotiating a roundabout. 1 do not EVER overtake on a roundabout, and 2. Always give way to the right (left in the colonies who know no better than to drive on the wrong side of the road.)

at 4:30 BS! This is not true in all traffic conditions. If the through traffic is substantially heaver in one crossing street, the traffic on the street with light traffic may not get to enter at all. There will be no breaks to allow a yielded entry. Also, pedestrians attempting to cross this heavy traffic will not be able to when they encounter the traffic exiting the circle. At that point the traffic is not controlled by a yield, and won't stop.

Standard Roundabout Mistake 1) @.17 seconds, note the semi needs to put the left steer tyre on the inner ring(concrete) to prevent the semi trailer left rear wheels mounting the curb. The curb radius is too tight for a 53' semi. STANDARD FAIL. 2) Use of round abouts in location that is to tight for large vehicles, ie harass city buses and rubbish truck, and fire trucks. THEN call it CALMING.LIKE HELL IT IS. Common mistake. 3) On tight roundabouts trucks HAVE to turn left from the right lane, beware. 4) Don't race semi trailers in round abouts, the trailer ALWAYS cuts in. The 3 engineering examples above are caused by engineers lacking a CDL, AND cdl experience. Dome type roundabouts (not shown) have a painted dome. Beware, the paint is slick when wet, no steering until you get off the paint. Lastly, the notorious phrase "Traffic Calming" LIKE HELL IT IS. It pisses people off and then you have worse driving to contend with as well. Ask the HEAVY HAULERS how to design a road, THEN watch traffic flow smoothly.
