We’re told that countries across the Global South are poor and plagued by violence not because of colonialism, imperialism, never ending Western wars, resource theft and destabilization campaigns. Rather, it’s because they’re ruled by corrupt and greedy people who seem to be innately authoritarian and backwards due to some sort of cultural deficiency that prevents respect for human rights and causes state failure.
To discuss the colonial and racist framework used by Western policymakers to justify ongoing imperialist aggression in Africa and how it’s being folded into the new Cold War on Russia and China, Rania Khalek was joined by Zubairu Wai, Associate Professor of Political Science and Global Development Studies at the University of Toronto.

Great interview. But, from the Marxist Dependency Theory perspective can we really say that Chinese investments in infraestructure and their trade relationship with African countries is really breaking Dependency? Of course Chinese investments break with the western globalization agenda of liberalization, privatization, structural adjustments and austerity. This is very good. But that in it self is not enough yo foster development that would change these countries standing in the international division of labor. We can definitely support Chinese investments from a counter hegemonic perspective today. But not from a Marxist structural point of view

And the African city states sailed as far as India and China too and they traded with them. Till this day you can find Chinese porcelain and Chinese coins in the ruins of these East African city states in present day Tanzania and Northern Mozambique. When the Portuguese arrived in that region their ships bombarded, and destroyed the cities. Their men went ashore and sacked the cities. They took all the treasures, slaughtered and enslaved the populations from these city states. That is the Western way of dealing with other peoples.

the Ming fleet didnt take the animals for free. It was an exchange of gifts with whoever was the african tribe ruler. The mighty Ming Fleet of over 300 ships was the world first largest fleet n biggest ships ever built It was led by the great Admiral Chenghe .He could easily seized any land from the natives thro out his 7 voyages spanning 2 decades yet that was never the intention of the fleet mission. The Admiral was sent to b envoy for the great Ming Emperor Zhu Di aka Yongle One can still find the full mission statement for the fleet in the Emperor 's edict to the Admiral inscribed in a large stone edifice in the Admiral's hometown . In the Emperor 's edict , there was a line telling the Admiral that he must return any gift made by any natives rulers with a gift of higher if not at least equal value . This is why you know the Admiral didnt take the african animals for free. He would have exchanged precious chinese gifts for the animals. with the african ruler concerned. The Ming fleet also charted the lst ever navigational maps of the world Copies of their maps were used decades later by european voyagers . The fleets of these european voyages were far smaller than the earlier Ming fleet . However they were no envoys of peace n diplomacy . They were on deadly missions .-to conquer n colonise & to kill and massacre the natives inhabitants who stood in their way and thus began the western colonial era .

As an ethnic Chinese I can say 10 to 15 years ago you wouldn't find such Africans willing to come out to defend China. The African words made me cry because he accurately describe what I call the Chinese culture. Chinese people will treat African equal and with respect because that is what the Chinese have been for thousands of years. I am an old, white American, and I remember the racism of my childhood very well. It has softened a little since then, but we still wear a superior self-perception, which comes with the Euro-American colonialist culture. I don't know what it takes to get rid of it. But I do see now that we would just as soon blame Africa for Russia and China as to blame Russia and China for Africa. I think we are deeply guilty. So now we get to watch the world learn to cooperate in civilization, while we are left outside, learning the hard way.

Unfortunately arrogance and hubris are deeply ingrained into western culture. The only way to dilute them is to learn and absorb certain aspects of other cultures. Like China learned Buddhism from India, Marxist Socialism from the Soviets and Science and Technology from Europe and America, then made all of these elements their own. America claims to be a “melting pot of cultures”, perhaps it’s time to start acting like one.

For avoidance of doubt, Africa does not have any quarrel with either Russia 🇷🇺 or China 🇨🇳. The two countries, together with North Korea 🇰🇵 Cuba 🇨🇺 supported, trained and supplied liberation forces throughout Africa during the fight for independence. They have been on Africa's side since time immemorial. Just about 12% of Africa's total external debt is owed to China yet everybody sees infrastructure everywhere while one struggles to see what the over 88% of the external debt from the usual suspects has been used for. The talk of colonisation, debt trap is meant to deflect from those who have/are indeed colonising and debt trapping Africa

Even Europeans have taken a very judicious stance on GMOs by adopting a precautionary principle policy whereby, GMO food or products can be taken by those who choose to utilise them but consumers are protected by having the products labelled in markets and protecting any risks to contamination of the environment throughout the value chain. In some African countries, GMOs companies and governments behind them have politically manipulated puppet heads of governments and parliamentarians have been literally bribed to have GMOs legislated for in these literally colonised countries with provisions for GMOs companies rights for criminalising farmers' use of own seeds and making farmers dependent on GMOs seeds! Western imperialism is deep and the problems Africa is having now of ultra tribalism is due to the return of colonialism and imperialism in Africa. Communities, ethnic groups, families and individuals whose cultures or values are against disrespect for human life, love for property above human life, violation of human rights, abuse of human labour, sleaze, ethnic discrimination, criminality, immorality, and any other western choking values like forcing LGBT on African societies are targeted for sabotage on socioeconomic development and right to participation in the governance of their own societies through dictatorships and unconstitutional rule and even personal growth at community, indidual and any other levels by western political strucures embedded in Africa! They have spies even at institutional levels in Africa who intervene on their behalf against communities and individuals at those levels. History of colonialism is repeating itself in that traitors working for the colonists are now at all levels of society and tribalism makes this even more lethal! This is how threatening western imperialism is to Africa's development! Endless ethnic wars are being fought in Africa and ethnic cleansing is becoming a feature of the western come back to reposition itself in the past brutal neocolinization and imperialists positions decades ago.

Russia is one of the most resource rich country in the world and Russia's food supply is abundant and stable! Go look at UK's supermarket shelves and you see the food items were empty or getting very expensive while Russian supermarket's food supply is still very strong as Russia is also a major exporter of fertilizers! This is why Russia' economy is more stable than many Europeans countries now! To say that Russia is going after resources is kinda funny!

Well said you're right. For real these people are beyond dumb to say ''Oh Russia is going to exploit/steal resources in African countries'' I'm like you people have never learned history of Russia's influence with other countries of the world literally they're brainwashed by western media they keep saying Russia China are the evil force of our world which is nonsense lol

Such a great interview. For any “brown, black and yellow” people reading this, there are many of us “white” Americans and Europeans who are actively trying to decolonize ourselves, and trying to take political action to decolonize our nations. The powers that be are extremely powerful considering all the wealth they’ve strip mined from the world so this change doesn’t happen overnight. Nonetheless there are many of us in the west who are horrified by the dark parts our collective history. Once the powers the be become the powers that were hopefully we can reign in a new world of peace, harmony, and sovereignty. Many blessings for this wonderful conversation.

The problems are FOREIGN ENTITIES do not belong to Africa like Anglo-Saxons who "managed" Africa Nations for hundreds of years Milking from Earth resources and keeping Nations of Africa in Slavery and Poor or POORER. Imperialism and Colonialism create wars and Tools for wars. Some countries where "sanction" and they understand Pain so they helping eachother. Everyone knew this gone happen if you "sanction" everybody, everybody will pay you back. Is not Murphy's law, but Boomerang Law and is doing Great Job on Anglo-Saxons Nations. Peace with Russia would be Great Idea.

Looking under the context of BRICS summit 2023 held at Johannesburg SA, the Africa as a whole is trying to BRICSize to acquire and secure financial support outside west-dominated international monetary system for development, security, earn a seat or has a say in global governance whilst anti-colonialism or anti-imperialism is widely and popularly prevailing over Africa, Latin America, Pacific island countries … and many others.
