I was wondering about this a while ago: it should only be a matter of time before we can create endless music, made on the spot by ai to keep on going and going and flow perfectly with what ever would be going on, be it in a game or in the real world or whatever.

the only thing about this that I don't entirely agree with is using this kind of AI to make endless music for video games. Most of the time, since there's a finite amount of music to a game's disposal, tracks become recognizable and beloved to the player. So it becomes easy for the game to add an extra layer of emotion to certain scenes by using a track the player recognizes. If a game would have infinite tracks, the music wouldn't be sentimental, and that extra layer of emotion and player attachment would be gone. In my specific experiences, I've been a fan of a game series that has been around since 2002, with the next installment of the series coming in a few months. I'm young, so this series has been a part of my life for most of it, and I've grown attached to the amazing tracks I've heard so long ago. The series still uses these same tracks, except now renewed, recomposed, so they stay fresh. It always excites me to hear a swell of music I already know and am attached to, but different, and even more amazing; its just incredibly satisfying as a fan. On top of all that, since I am so attached to this finite amount of tracks, and these tracks have been used in many significant scenes in this series' games, just hearing a certain track, on its own, can make me swell with emotion. That's just something an infinite amount of music couldn't achieve.

Yes, it's a good point! Repetition can definitely be useful to make something memorable, but you do also touch on an import tool that composers use to make the soundtrack feel fresh: musical variations. Instead of looping the same themes over and over again, you can add subtle variations in the orchestration / arrangement, based on what's happening on the screen. That's what happens already (at smaller scale) in movies where a character theme might be used in different scenes, but will be arranged to be more action driven if the character is in danger, or more emotional if the character is passing away. With AI, the scale of the possibilities is obviously increased there, for an interactive medium like games.

I feel like there are just places where AI low cost procedurally infinitely generated music work, and places where it dont. Like obviously, in hand crafted single player games, you probably don't want AI generate new music for everything. But for games that are intended to be played for hundreds of hours. Like online competitive games like overwatch, or player created content games like mario maker, infinite generated music can help a lot.

But because art (sculpture, painting, music) is not just a job to earn money. Arts is that thing people live FOR. That was the case for centuries. There are 2 types of jobs: 1 - Jobs we do just to earn money. 2 - Jobs we do because we live for it. What we call 'a calling'. I don't mind that mindless jobs are dying out. Like assembly line jobs. Noone lives FOR working at assembly lines. I don't mind Uber killing cab driver jobs. Noone lives FOR driving people to adresses. But arts... Please don't kill arts! Without it life would be empty. That's a special human thing. We always lived FOR arts. Wanted to quit our day jobs to free up more time to compose music/painting/doing sculptures. Many people's dream is to become a musician/dancer/actor. After this what would we be dreaming about becoming?

The difference between AI music and human-made music is the story, meaning and/or passion of that piece. You can have a breathtakingly beautiful track made by an AI but that's all it is: algorithmically-made music built from mathematical inferences and human suggestion compiled together by averaging out the major successes of past musicians. Songs that can deal with deep or themes have to be human, require the needed nuances, and will almost always lose all meaning when they were made by a computer, they don't quite resonate as much because computers can't feel or "understand" emotions in the same way we humans do; emotionally-charged songs like, imo, I Wanna Get Better by Bleachers or Dreams by The Cranberries evoke strong emotions don't only work just because of music technicality or prowess, while remarkable, but they work because the were made by *living, breathing people* who put their style, life experiences, and passion into their songs. If you are going through things or just feeling hurt, you can know or believe that they also know the same pain and they are willing to express those feelings and let their listeners know that *they've gone through it too,* and that they've made it through or have found solace to their problem. Again, The AI is just a composing jukebox that relies on the averaging out of previous musical achievements, it's risk-free but honestly shallow. As humans we crave resonations with and connections to things, person or items, we want to be understood and be a part of something bigger. I wouldn't be worried. Humanity and empathy is something that can't be truly replicated by a machine.
@BloodyWolfsTear6 жыл бұрын
@Argentarus We will soon see about that. I think the next steps of improvement will follow faster than we might think. To combine a voice and an Algorithm for things that have so called "feels" and "deep meaning" for us humans are not as complex as you think. I mean " F**K the Police" or "Smoke Weed every day", are not so deep text's with the spiritual meaning of a Gandhi behind them, that no machine could have ever be written them. There are not many things that move our lives: Believe on higher entities/power, Meaning, Myth's and Story, Social constructs, Love, Hate, Fear, Politics, Health and Wealth. All that can be Analyzed and packed into a good and meaningful text structure over a good rhythm with a nice melody and the voice of an Angel. lol The thing that can't be ripped off/replaced is the connectivity to an Artist as a Person and never will be. That's the reason why Music made by human Artists will never die out, because of the Person behind the Music and his life story expressed thru his Songs. Not because AI could never create the same level of Music in meaning and nuances of feeling in its voice, it will some day and anyone knows that, the people that say it can not, have no idea of the progress and ingenuity that the AI developers can and will make/have over at the next decades.

Very interesting, I didn't think an AI would be able to do this already (although human musicians and a human interpretation are sure to help). I could definitly see this being applied to create music for mass comsumption, such as the more generic pop, film, game and commercial music. But I think a lot of people seem to forget the real meaning and point of good music, and art in general: It is not a collection of notes on paper, or rules of composition (although for some composers it unfortunatly seems to be); it is the multiple layers behind the notes that should shine thorugh in a good composition and interpretation/performance: What was the inspiriation to compose, the intentions behind it, the symbolism used, the thought and feelings being expressed, the potential spiritual character, the inventive aspects etc.; a good composer can let his/her entire life and cultural and political background and surroundings sound though the music. I think it will be very difficult, if not impossible, for an AI to 'understand' and express these multiple layers. I am still astonished that a program can compile music like this. I wouldnt call it composing or creating; it sounds more like a compilation or reproduction of what was done before (but most music on the radio sounds like that too, and I definitely couldnt do it better). Some parts sound good, others strangely out of place. Sort of an uncanny valley effect in music. But this doenst mean its bad; its better then what I hear on the dutch radio most of the time. I would love AI to take over the jobs of second rate factory composers, then they can hopefully do something more meaningfull with their lives. Maybe someday if or when AI will be self consciouss they could actually 'compose' music. But I think we as humans will not be able to understand all the layers I named above that will be expressed by the AI, only other AI could identify and appreciate them. What a wonderfull and slightly scary time to be alive, that I have to defend my profession from a computer program. Looking forward to the future :)

It makes me pause and wonder: what would it take to produce something like this in a traditional studio? Hiring a band, creating arrangements, working with a skilled producer-these are no small feats. Add to that the weeks or even months it could take to compose, record, and refine every detail, and the costs can be staggering. But here we are, standing at the forefront of a creative revolution. With AI tools, anyone can step into the world of music creation, bypassing some of these barriers. It makes me question: are we truly realizing the value AI brings to music production? For artists and creators, even using AI for pre-production could save enormous amounts of time, effort, and money. Beyond that, it opens up possibilities for experimentation and exploration that traditional processes might not always allow. Is AI music production the key to unlocking a new wave of creativity for all? Something worth thinking about as we experience this blend of technology and artistry. in my humble opinion, i think, It's truly remarkable to see how AI is revolutionizing the music production process, especially when it comes to pre-production. The ability to quickly generate melodies, lyrics, and arrangements allows musicians to experiment and refine their ideas more efficiently than ever before. Here are just a few advantages that I can come up with at the top of my head: 1 - Time Efficiency: With AI, musicians can instantly test different tempos, structures, and arrangements. This means less time spent rehearsing, experimenting, and reworking ideas manually. 2 - Cost Savings: AI reduces the need for lengthy studio sessions and hiring additional musicians for early testing. Musicians can develop and test their ideas before committing to full studio recordings, saving both time and money. 3 - Creative Exploration: AI offers a risk-free environment to experiment with various styles and sounds, allowing artists to explore different creative directions without the pressure of expensive trial-and-error. 4 - Enhanced Workflow: AI-generated demos make rehearsals more efficient, providing a complete arrangement for musicians to work with, and offering quick feedback on different song elements. Affordable Pre-Production: AI enables musicians to prototype their songs at a fraction of the cost, offering the ability to test out arrangements and compositions before investing in studio time or session musicians. But hold on, should we really get that enthusiastic about it? There is actually, an elephant in the room, I think ... while AI has immense potential, it's important to keep in mind that policies and ownership issues could become a challenge. Given the legal complexities around authorship, there’s always the risk of losing control or recognition for your work if AI is heavily involved in the creation process. It's something musicians should definitely consider as they navigate this exciting new tool. I don't know ... thoughts?? What do you think? Is the future of music closer than we imagine? 🎵🤔

I would LOVE this to be implemented in Videogames. I believe it's the more logical next step, as videogames have a defined atmosphere at any given moment, but it can indeed be repetitive, no matter how good the OST might be. It would also really improve the flow from one situation to the other instead of just cutting off or fading into each other. So much potential, really glad he developes that Idea. Would also really like to see how it would work out to "feed" your personal favorites to get a truly personalized result. Though it's most likely going to be problematic to involve coherent lyrics in that kind of process. Still, now I'm excited about something I never knew I wanted real bad, thanks for that ;)

@asakazeee Жыл бұрын
It is true. The more possibilities or parameters we have to manipulate and control AI, the more human creativity can be enhanced. AI should not overshadow it, but enhance it, how? by removing obstacles and providing facilities for our creativity. It should reduce the limitations when creating content, for example, the inevitable insipiracion between artists, which is not a bad thing, but perhaps the AI can make our product something much more ours, much more attached to what our brain really asks for, avoiding, if desired, the mark that the referent leaves on the artist and his works, which is always very clearly noticeable. I am not saying that this is wrong, I just mean that it is so because it can not be otherwise, the referent will always leave its mark, but the AI can make it possible that this "mark" of the referents is nothing more than the inspiration itself, because if we could control many more aspects of our works, then our works would be much more attached to what we really want to convey. The more control we have over the AI, the more our creativity will be enhanced, we will be able to create incredible things, we will advance to another era in audiovisual communications, in the very way of transmitting ideas and perhaps carrying them out. Of course, as long as everyone can make use of this control, then art will continue to stand.

In the social context of fast food culture, we need the cultural industry that adapt to it. The demand for art and entertainment is increasing day by day, while the speed at which we produce it has remained at the initial level. But now, with artificial intelligence technology, we can generate tens of thousands of music in a day, far more than the numbers that music has been produced every day around the world before. We have to figure out the reason why people do really like a piece of music: they don't worship composers or chase stars, but because it resonate with their growth and life experiences, allowing them to find their share of pleasure and comfort in their busyness and boredom. Thus, in fact, composers are the same as clothing designers and Five-star chefs.They are using their own labor results to meet the needs of people at different levels of society. Everyone's dress style is different, each person's taste also has the characteristic,everyone have their favorite clothing brand or the restaurant menu in their heart. As service workers,we can not regulate consumer preferences,only to comply with consumers instead,as far as possible to meet their diverse needs. Artificial intelligence provides us with the need for customization, and the price is very considerable. If other music producers can tailor their favorite music to the audience's preferences, and produce a higher quality than the machines,how could they lose their jobs?

Even though it is an interesting idea, I do not really like the concept. Even though a video game that you will play to for thousands of hours only has two hours of soundtrack, you will know that soundtrack by heart and the feeling that you get when that "epic battle" soundtrack comes in shouldn't be replaced by endless bits of music that you cannot relate to because all different. Everyone has a different perception of music, yet besides your personal preferences, it also bores a cultural and common identity. Because several person heard the same music they can relate and create a community. We're not just individuals, we are societies.

As a gamer this is a huge step towards making video games even more engaging - given, that loops kind of draw you out of the experience when your subconscious notices that a song replays f.i. in a particular area of a game. There's definitely a place for AI composition.

When the pipe organ started being used in orchestral settings, the wind players were up in arms. They felt they were being replaced by a machine. When drum machines started being used for pop and rock records, the drummers were up in arms! But the reality is that the really good drummers never lost work, and the pipe organ sits happily in big orchestral settings (just hear Mahler's Symphony number 8)... So, with time, there is always an expansion of facilities, electronic helpers (digital recording), possibilities of all kinds.... and foreward thinking musicians are the first to capitalise on these developments. So, there will be many up in arms at things emerging like AIVA, but the reality will be that composers will tap into all the pools of possibilities (John Cage and "randomness" for instance), but what is decided will be as the final outcome will always be the composer's decision. The AI is an assistant along the way, but not the final say.... (ha ha, maybe for Muzak styles, maybe.... but not for timeless, legendary music.)

This vid made me sad. Art is joy. Joy of creation. Don't take that away from us! When there's a stage with a dances it's the DANCER who experiences the most joy in the room. When Lady Gaga performs it's Lady Gaga who experiences the most joy. When a composer creating a symphony it's the composer who experiences the most joy. So making creative jobs obsolete is really sad for us. Our life would be twice as empty.

So what data does Aiva use to compose personalized music. I did not get it, Does it take into account something from the target personality or situation ?
@MatchTerm6 жыл бұрын
For now, it takes multiple songs of the same artist and learn what is the common theme: then, it creates a track based on the given data. Try searching for AIVA yt channel or their website

The AI is not composing. It is simply generating materials based on existing music created by human composers. Unless AI will one day experience and understand the human society and ideologies, it is not going to create original works that can push boundaries.

Do you know that loss of motivation after you unlock too much content in an online game with money or you enter that cheat code in a single player game? I feel like AI is gonna do that to my life.. It's not just music, they can do that to any process of design.. I also fear that AI will at some point dictate what's right for us and what isn't.
@blokschaaf89413 жыл бұрын
You obviously get it. Knowing that stuff like this is out there and evolving can be really scary, and can induce apathy(for me personally at least), like you´re just ´feeding the machine´ or something. I don't have an answer, but for now let's realize that AI always responds to the input humans give it and blends that, not much else

At 1:58, death of music as a means of communication detected: "We needed to teach AIVA how to compose the right music for the right person, because people have different preferences". This is said en passant, seemingly without any questioning, but in reality it is a function of the fact that AIVA is faking, not communicating. It's also the death of evolution in the personal reception of music: from now on it doesn't matter how hard your ears are, we have something for you. This is the ultimate anti-modernism project. At 4:26 he continues to talk about "personalized music" and promises nothing less than to bring composers back from the dead, which is of course completely false, since they could create and AIVA can only derive.

Hmm, both pieces sounded a bit formulaic to me.
@arsenymakarov69616 жыл бұрын
I think it's because you knew that they were made by an algorithm, and not because of some distinctive quality of the music itself most of the music sounds formulaic, and most of it is, except rare cases when an author made it his goal to create the most unexpected piece of music. Like John Cage and followers of his philosophy, for example.

Does not Mozart too, sometimes?

Yeah Mozart's works are highly predictable. But that's what makes them so beautiful partially,
@fburton86 жыл бұрын
It's balancing predictability and surprise, with the 'right' combination of those somewhat varying between listeners.
@fabled.6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but a lot of the orchestral music nowadays is made for movie and game scores. And a lot of them do sound very formulaic. Listen to any Disney movie soundtrack, it basically sounds the same as any other. He also alluded that we need to "generate" some more personalized music for our 100 hour game playthrough (aka more of the same but not so much that it makes an impression). Good luck to them. If you view music as a product that you put on a conveyor belt then having an AI do it is actually pretty efficient, although sad and devoid of possibility for creating anything new.

I just listened to the hour long music composition that the A.I had created. And in my opinion The notes are there, but it still sounds superficial like a movie sound track. Its neither memorable, novel or moving in anyway. Theres no real build up and what there is in terms of climax is forgettable and predictable.
