Christianity is usually seen as the main religion in Europe, but in Albania and a few other countries, Islam maintains a large presence, and I give an explanation on why exactly this is!

Also worth mentioning that Albania didn't deal in population exchange like Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey did, in fact many muslims ended up in Albania in 19-20th century because they weren't persecuted there based on religion.

Technically it did, somewhat, since many Muslim Albanians were deported to Turkey ( which is why many Turks have Albanian ancestors, some sources number as many as 500.000~1.3 million however there are higher estimates ) whilst Orthodox Albanians were forcefully assimilated after the first Balkan War.

To all Arabs calling us brothers- We are Illyrians. We were Pagans before. Because of the wars and other stuff, we were forced to take up religion. But to us religion doesn’t have the same importance as to other countries. We have our blood first (as we say, we will melt our crosses and turn them to bullets if our Muslim Albanian Brothers need aid), then religion partially. Islam and even Christianity is not practiced as other countries think. We celebrate a few occasions but we don’t see it as religious. We drink Alcohol and don’t even cover up like Arabs do. @@personaldove Well, you are right here to some extent my friend. Albanian culture is heavily influenced by the Ottoman culture. After all, Ottomans were the ones who brought Islam to the Albanians. Regarding Pakistanis, I would not say they are related to each other but most Pakistanis speak Indo-European languages. Albanians also speak one of that language. Although, it is more isolated than other Indo-European languages. Majority of Pakistanis speak Indo-Iranian (Aryan) languages which is a subgroup of the broader Indo-European language family but there is a linguistic hypothesis which is Greaco-Aryan languages within the Indo-European language family. Greaco-Aryan languages can be further divided into Aryan (spoken by most Pakistanis), Armenian, Hellenic (Greek) and Illyrian (Albanian). So yeah, we (Pakistanis) kinda have a connection with Albanians.

And the answer is the ancient history and that explain everything,...for example : Illyrians were pagan , they didn’t have a proper religion , so when they got in contact with Roman, Slavic population, Ottoman they took there religion , the need something spirituality, and something to survival !...this is why Albanians have many religion groups in Albania ! But in this mixture of religious domination, there are those who always refused religion all the time,...their connection with identity and ancient ancestors was so strong ,..religion groups didn’t find any chance to convince them ,....Ottomans even called them as ( Arnaut ) which in Turkish means people with no faith ! This group which refused religion, they even labelled religion as different culture,..which trying do destroy our ancient culture !....This conflict among Albanians who refused religion was a message even for those Albanians who took those religion ! If you see Albanians during the history ,...you can clearly see they fight Ottomans , Venetian, Serbs ,...And in those fights religion didn’t matter for Albanian ,..they were united together,..so this shows clearly religion wasn’t as strong among Albanians as their identity to be Albanian . An Albanian poet in ottoman era say : “religion of Albanian is Albanian “ which mean their identity . Another reason why over 50% of Albanian did take muslim religion was the power they were gaining in military, commander, ottoman government , education, economically like gaining land All the mosques what you see in Albania are not made by Albanians ,..but by Turkey This is done to show to the western world Turkish domination in this region,...they even pay pension and give education to affiliate Albanian as Turks ,..but so far they have failed

I’m from the same city as you , yes the reason for this unreligiousness is because of Enver Hoxhas brutal reign. Islam was made illegal for 23 years from 1967-1990 and so during this time people were forced to disassociate themselves with it by not praying,not fasting,not giving to charity, you weren’t allowed in mosques to pray, 750 mosques demolished or destroyed, imams killed and tortured, islamic schools which were widespread for the people were forcefully closed, Muslim names like our parents or grandparents became illegal towards naming them to the new generation, people had to only pick “Illyrian” names, you be given years in prison just by having a Quran in the house. And after all this tyranny towards religious people unfortunately it moved them away from it. The generation which is our parents one is the one to be raised as atheists by the state and so when communism went away this generation didn’t have much knowledge of religion to spread to us ,especially being diaspora which is even harder with all the outside influences . But at the end of the day it all a test, just like when a teacher looks at your paper when during an exam , they keep quiet even if they see a mistake , it’s only after the test is finished you get what you put in . I respect your culture and ways but we have different mentality when it comes to things like religion over here in Europe. To us religion should add something positive in our lives and we also believe strongly in personal freedom and free choice (well most of us do anyway). So for me for example I do not wear hijab, I do not pray 5 times a day but I love Allah s.w.t and I fast ramadan and do not eat pork etc...to me my relationship with Allah is personal and beautiful and I think this is how Europeans in general we approach all religions. Even Christian Europeans do not follow every single thing. Of course there are some of us Muslim Europeans who do follow everything and that is their choice and there is nothing wrong with that just as there should not be anything wrong with someone not wanting to follow every single thing. At the end of the day God (Allah s.w.t) is the one who judges us and decides if we go to heaven or not and inshallah (God willing) Allah will send those with pure intentions to heaven. Of course it is best to approach religion and follow it as much as possible but if u do not it is a personal thing and no one should really punish you I think in my opinion. I hope this made sense and I hope I came across respectful. I don't want to offend no one.

Albanians converted to Islam in order to have the right to bear arms so they could protect their properties, they could get an education in Istanbul and Edirne and most importantly to pay less taxes. Nevertheless in majority they remain sceptical of religions and only practice the once or twice a year ceremonies, like Christmas and Eid which everybody celebrates no matter which religion they inherited or recently voluntarily joined. When choosing a mate to marry religion is not a factor at all.

Nice video but if you could have just added a few more facts about Enver Hoxhas tyranny. 750 mosques demolished many being centuries old , Muslim names forced to changed,new borns had to choose “Illyrian” names, imams killed or imprisoned, you weren’t allowed to read kuran or go to the mosque, weren’t allowed to fast or pray. And finally in all this period of it being illegal for 23 years (1967-1990) it was heavily ridiculed and laughed at. So naturally this pushed people further from religion because the older generation weren’t allowed to pass anything down to the new current generations. This is exactly why Albanians from Kosovo (though it was discouraged) and Macedonia (wasn’t banned at all so even more religious) are generally more religious and keep it closer to them because their beliefs weren’t trampled and shredded like Albania was. And so it makes me a bit frustrated when I see Albanians from Albania proper saying “we were never religious” meanwhile not acknowledging anything that happened for the past 50 years... 👍👍👍

Another important factor is that albanians were made dependent on others and as they were to be assimilated by them. Best example albanians weren’t allowed to form their own christian orthodox church like greece serbia bulgaria russia etc. this being a very strong tool of control during those tlmes. They also weren’t allowed to perform liturgy in their native language therefore being forced to perform them either in slavonic or greek. Same arguments can be said for the catholic side. So it’s quiet understandable that there never really was a strong connection to towards christianity and weren’t completely opposed when this new religion showed up. Especially giving them a higher standing in society something they basically didn’t have similar like the bosniaks in bosnia Also im pretty sure the right to bear arms was also a factor given that albania had a very martial culture

Good overview, but a bit sloppy with the details. At one point you color the whole map of the former Republic of Jugoslavia and call them serbs. You also include Bulgarians as part of the slavic/jugoslavic peoples, while they are more mongolian than slavic. I understand that it's impossible to draw borders that make everyone happy, and people tend to stress the part of history that makes them feel good and cherry pick borders that maximises their sense of pride, such as the comments that "Albania is much bigger in reality". This is so true and nobody cares like it was barely peacefully spread and it was only peacefully spread so people could trade for more money which had the rulers influence people in their countries to convert to Islam for high government positions and other non pure willful things like that. Lots of pressure was put on citizens to be Muslims otherwise it was conquest and force. Unlike Christianity which would start off peacefully spreading without an Empire people became Christian for the love of it not getting benefits but being persecuted for it by Roman Pagans though later with colonization it was forced funnily enough it started in the Iberian Peninsula which was conquered by Muslims almost fully so I guess Iberians learned well from Muslims that forcing conversion is more efficient.

The majority remained pagans. That changed fundamentally after Skanderbeg's death and the subsequent betrayal of Christian Europe to the Albanian people. Although the Albanians successfully fended off every attack by the Ottoman sultan and conqueror of Constantinople for over 25 years, and above all rendered an immeasurable service to Christian Europe, the mighty Christian kings and emperors of Europe as well as the Pope then left the whole Balkan(orig. Gadishullin Ilir) to the Turks. After so much evil and betrayal by the Christian faith community of Europe, it was only logical that the Albanians opted for the Koranic version of monotheism, the Islam. A decision that the Albanians do not regret to this day. The decision in favor of Islam automatically upgraded the Albanians in the Ottoman Empire with a position of supremacy in their region that ensured them, above all, their culture, their language and their identity, which was on the verge of their downfall.
