Excellent video. I find it to be a very very fine line at both Darts and Pool. Once i've tipped the balance too much my game falls off a cliff but there is without doubt a sweet spot where my game improves massively at both. It's always been something I didn't want to believe was true because I had confidence in my ability but there is little doubt now that a certain amount alcohol can improve my game. It can only be down to my arm relaxing a tiny bit and losing any small feeling of apprehension of missing or losing. Like I said though, once the balance has been tipped my game falls off a cliff.

I used to play in a darts team. Always had to have at least three pints in me or I was rubbish. We used to go to monthly medal competitions and I often did quite well. A few times our home bar was shut though, and we arrived too late to get served at the crowded bar. Every one of those times I lost almost straight away lol. Beer helped me block out any audience

Alcohol can boost one's playing ability up to a certain level! I don't encourage anyone to drink alcohol for that purpose! I prefer to play on my own sober ability! After that, it becomes a false sense of security, then one's throwing accuracy will drop, and games can and will be lost; especially important games! 🙂

The difference between playing darts in a competitions to just playing by yourself or mates and drinking is that it takes the edge of and calms the nerves. Yes some people can play without a drink but not at a high level.

Great video! I was lucky enough to spend a few hours with some pro players a while back as a guest of a sponsor at a closed door event. I asked 3 or 4 of them the same question and they all said 3-4 pints was the optimum amount although it was was always tricky maintaining this level through a competition without having too much or too little at the time of the next game. That said the guy who won the day was completely pi55ed by the end of the night and could hardly walk. I do wonder what alcohol brings to the situation and can only assume it helps relax you, gives you a kind of false sense of ability which then increases confidence. There must be other ways of achieving this without drinking so much each time you want to play darts. I know several pro players use hypnosis.... While this video is a good experiment, I'd like to see it done over a longer time period as we often feel/play very different from day to day. Maybe a day of drinking before a session of nondrinking because I often play better if I've played for a few days on the trot. Well done Jack!

When I first step on the oche, for some reason i’am a nervous wreck and barely hit the board. However after about 4 tins of beer I relax and play quite well, I wish I could bottle this feeling. I’d no idea how mentally and confidence based darts really is.

imo, darts is like 10% physical, and 90% mental... think about it, even ur grandma COULD, step up to the oche and hit a maximum. I also don't think it's a generally good idea to train yourself in a way that u have to drink to get better. I think like u said, it takes the nervousness away a bit, loosens you up. But there are other healthier ways to do that too. Of course if u play a few hours once a week with a mate and drink a few pints, nothing wrong with it. But when you are a pro/semi pro earning substantial money doing it, you shouldn't really drink. Cause then u just have to drink to perform, which isn't a good thing in my book. And i think the top pros would probably be just as good without alcohol if they had to get used to it. It would of course take some getting used to, and maybe some real old timers wouldn't get to the very same level, but most i guess would be just as good.

A test like this has too many variables to tell you much at all. An improvement in the two nights could easily be attributed to the benefit of the sober practice you did on on that board on night one, a placebo effect, the fact that you usually play in that place while drinking and the drop off in performance on night two could easily be down to fatigue. I think it would be better to look at the scientifically proven effects of alcohol physiologically and cognitively in varying amounts and then work out whether these effects benefit or hinder darts performance.
