I hate to say it. But Ralph “85” Brown kept a journal and his character was definitely not stupid until mid-shoot. Every time they got new changes, he saw his character and acting sidelined more and more, and it felt personal to him whenever he worked with her, as if she was worried about being upstaged in her own film. If you go with his account, it becomes clear Sigourney was a major factor in how and why they eff’d this movie up - and it’s only verified by comparing the two cuts. She’s a producer and it seems like hardly a coincidence Fincher’s rough cut was butchered to screw all the other characters. Aliens worked because the secondary characters were so vivid and dynamic, but with A3, they shot an ensemble piece with the best character actors in the world, then subverted it to make a star vehicle that didn’t exist. Anyone who’s cut a film knows that paradox where you cut for time to speed up a film and that makes it even MORE boring, because those little bits you cut made you care about the characters. The Assembly Cut is the only version I will watch.

FYI, this cut was indeed on HBOMax. Some movies with alternate cuts have separate tabs on their pages, movies like Dr Sleep, AVP:R and even Conquest of the Planet of the Apes have had their extended versions on there

As a cynical nihilistic teen, this movie actually worked for me in so many ways. This was the original theatrical release that I saw in a theatre with my dad. My dad didn't like it much l, but I absolutely loved it. The acting and dialogue really got me. When I watched the Special Edition many years later, I loved it even more. It's my 3rd favorite movie of the franchise after Alien and Aliens of course.

A little detail I like from the workprint comes from Morse right after Aaron's been killed. He yells something like, "Shit! Aaron!!!" This after calling him "85" the entire film. A minor character change, but a nice one in my opinion.

The Extended Cut ending where the Alien Queen never burst out implies that Ripley could've had a chance to survive but chose to die instead. Where the theatrical cut Ripley never had a chance.

There is a theory that the Queen burst out at the end, because it sensed it’s imminent doom, and burst out right then and there in a last ditch effort to try to escape and survive.

For 20th Century-Fox, the Queen bursting out meant that they had another loophole for reviving the franchise. It was established these things survive the vacuum of space and all sorts of environmental horrors. In this film it even survived a molten lead submersion - so that reshoot was all about Weaver, who insisted on being killed off, not taking the I.P. with her into the pit of fire.

I didn't see it mentioned here, but Aliens 3 to me will always be the comic series by Mark Verheiden where the aliens get to Earth, Newt and Hicks survive and help with the fight, and Ripley and gang go to the Alien homeworld to find the queen mother. It's awesome.

The first time I saw Alien3 was when the Quardrilogy was coming out, so Channel 4 in the UK did a premiere of all of the extended cuts. I missed Alien, but saw Aliens and taped Alien3 - which ran so long that my tape cut out during the "no prayers!" scene 😅 Didn't get to see the ending for weeks after, but I still feel that tension everytime I rewatch it now. Really excited for you to review Arachnaphobia too!

I like the Assembly Cut much more than the Theatrical version. More shots of different areas of the prison make it look more like a real facility instead of a set. The prisoners are more involved with more dialogue. So they don't feel like just a bunch of red shirts. I like the choice of the Xenomorph coming out of the Ox instead of the dog, too. That Rottweiler just wasn't big enough to hold an alien. But the Xenomorph still seems to change size from scene to scene. Oof!

I saw alien 3 in the theater with my grandparents when I was 6. I had seen aliens at that point. At 6 years old I kinda liked it but was a little taken aback by how demure it was. I hated hated hated the ending because Ripley died. I just remember my grandparents looking at each other going "that was fucking garbage!" I still appreciatec it though. Even though half the theater had walked out way before that and I had no idea why

How Alien3 went from a massive disaster to just a mild disappointment

I keep seeing and hearing issue with the bambi burster size. It was only meant to be that big for the ox, it was that big because it couldn't escape on time since an ox's body is way stronger. So the ox died after the chestburster pinballed around in there, and finally got out when it grew larger. The burster was much smaller, there's deleted test footage of the actual dog burster size. They never had the bambi burster and the dog in the same shot. It was pretty much puppy sized.

I finally got around to reading the Aliens comics by Dark Horse (Omnibus compilations). Don't know if it's considered canon or not, but It makes a lot of this movie make SO much more sense.

My hot take is that this is prolly my favorite Alien movie. I tend to like "mean" movies. And this movie is a masterpiece of writing that just totally effs with the audience. Killing Newt and Hick off screen during the credits is a big win for me right off the bad. As much as people loved those characters, I was so hyped to see them go, cuz if they had been playing swiss family robinson in space, there would have been no sense of danger. Killing them set the tone, but the absolute brilliant part to me was setting up Charles Dance to be the male lead, up to setting him up for a path to a redemption arc, then BAM! unceremonious demise, really created an air of danger, where no one, not even your hero is safe. And then that ending. I love this movie. Especially the Assembly cut.

you can also hear a facehugger scurry at the end of the credits of Aliens special edition. Bishop put the egg on the sulaco. Nevermind it would have been almost impossible time wise. Bishop did it. I love this movie always have even though most don't. With the studio interference we're lucky we got anything other than the "on earth everyone can hear you scream" teaser (I remember being so pumped as a kid seeing that!!!!)

A warrior or drone alien could have carried an egg over to the ship and stuck it on there too. They were running around all over the place anyway, 1 could have slipped up on the ship while it was parked just like a warrior alien did earlier in the movie when it slipped up on the 1st drop ship and killed the pilots.

If Fincher had actual control from the offset it probably would have been much better. As it stands its kinda like they said you can do what you want within this tiny box we trapped you in.

From the different things I've read, Hick was killed off because Fox originally wanted to make him to be the main character (reading the dark horse comics, you can see that starting to happen). So the next writer in a fuck you move killed him off so it wouldn't happen. Which forced dark horse to retcon their comics.

The plot and characters are fleshed out more, but my issues with the story are still the same. Not great, but alright sequels. Not without their positives which are worth praising.

My introduction to the Alien franchise was a demo of the Amiga Alien 3 game. That big figure on the desk there has the loading screen! I thought the character you play was a guy and I got a shock when I rented the movie not long after that. I was only 7 and it was actually pretty scary! I think I then later seen the first movie and then the second. Always have a soft sport for alien 3 since it was my first. Not sure I fully watched the assembly cut but I think I will later today.

I remember reading an Alien Dark Horse graphic novel and thought it was pretty stupid.. Alien Resurrection comes out and I go see it in the theater, and I was pissed off. It was nearly the exact same story I had read about 6 months earlier! Same with AvP, but I guess it was better than Prometheus and it's Sequel. The effort put into making new cuts of this and Blade Runner, 2 flops, yet Superman 2 The Donner Cut looks like the spent next to no money on it, despite actually having Donner come back and the original movie being hugely successful.

I always felt that they should have made the audience pull for the Alien until going into the 3rd act, and then it becomes about Ripley again and for us to be against the Alien 100%. Play on that love to hate the protagonist. To do it, have the Alien kill the one character that Ripley actually cares for, and that is the "oh shit" moment for the main character and the line in the sand for the antagonist and protagonist. Playing on the audience's emotions.

I'm curious about this cut since I haven't gotten around to it yet. Newt and Hicks would bother me a bit either way since starting a script with that is kind of insulting to the audience. You can totally kill them off after you've given them something to do. I get trying to bring back the threat in a sequel but this felt like it was trying to do that without caring about where it came from.

there's a lot of comments here and I'm not going to read them all so maybe someone else already said this. but it is also my understanding that they did not want fincher to shoot that iconic close-up back of the movie box alien in her face scene. but he grabbed a camera and did it anyway and it turned out to be, again, that iconic scene. and maybe that thing in the basement was also something they didn't want him to shoot but of the few things I believe that I know about this movie that is one of them.
