How Alpine is becoming the third F1 team to waste Fernando Alonso

Күн бұрын

When Fernando Alonso celebrated his second world championship at the 2006 Brazilian Grand Prix, the 26-year-old had the Formula 1 world at his feet. But since then, he hasn’t achieved anything like the success that appeared to lie ahead of him.
There are myriad reasons for this, but right now we’re focusing on the equipment at his disposal with Alpine the latest team to squander what even Alonso’s sternest critics would have to admit is his prodigious talent.
That Alpine isn’t fighting for wins in F1 is to be expected, but as Alonso has pointed out, he has lost a lot of points this year to incidents not of his making and unreliability.

Alonso's Bahrain GP was missed out on in the video too. He had engine problems the whole race, and Alpine have also said that his car suffered from bad tyre wear issues. Since he looked faster than Ocon in quali, I'm pretty sure without his issues in the race, he would have finished 7th, which is another +4 points. And yes, obviously Ocon had some bad luck himself, which was not taken into account here, but it also wasn't taken into account how many points Ocon gained because of Alonso's lost positions. Without Alonso's bad luck, Ocon would have scored less in Bahrain, Saudi, Australia, Canada, and potentially in Spain and Austria too. So yeah, while some of Ocon's own point losses due to bad luck were ignored here, his point gains due to Alonso's bad luck were left in, which balances it out a bit IMO

I don't know why people ignore his other seasons and just mention 2012 as his prime. All of his Ferrari years are equally impressive. In 2010-Alonso 252 points Massa 144 In 2011-Alonso 257 points Massa 118 In 2012-Alonso 278 points Massa 122 In 2013-Alonso 242 points Massa 112 In 2014-Alonso 161 points Raikkonen 55 However Massa and Raikkonen were visibly not operating at their best levels during these years and Ferrari as we know always builds great cars. So what he did at Renault is more impressive to me. Plus his teammate Giancarlo Fisichella only got 8 podiums in 2005-2006. Grosjean got more at Lotus in 2012-2013 believe it or not. In summary Alonso's 2005-2006 seasons are heavily underrated.

I am a big Alonso fan. But his 2010 season was nowhere near 2012 and his other Ferrari years. He was amazing after the summer break in 2010. But considering the first half it was definitely by far his worst season at Ferrari (maybe even his worst season in F1). I think that in reality, the full story is that he is helping Alpine increase in terms of competitiveness. The car this year is a genuinely fast car with the team constantly improving. The reliability issues will be resolved, much in the same way that the tyre wear issues have been resolved. Alonso has every right to be frustrated, but you get the sense that things are looking up at Alpine, and he should just be a bit more patient. The car is fast on all kinds of circuits, occasionally being able to put in some stellar qualifying performances. But he is right, the team needs to start maximising its potential, which seems to be huge.

Alpine or Renault have never been close to being a real contender since 2005/2006. The facilities are average and as Verstappen and Red Bull have said on multiple occasions the engines were shit and there was no commitment to make it better or to try and be the best. I will never forget some of the stories Verstappen told in front of the dutch media where he said that sometimes parts would be missing from the engine or things didn't fit properly within the engine and when they told Renault they just didn't care. There's a reason why nobody wants to have a Renault customer engine. Renault/Alpine are never going to get there, such a shame for Alonso who they clearly don't deserve. Just listen closly to Prost or any former teammembers and they all say the same things.

Alpine have been perennial underachievers in their current guise, everyone knows this. But, The-Race (and Sky F1, to be fair) never seems to discuss their performances with any nuance. If you have even a modicum of interest in Formula 1, it’s clear that Alpine has positioned itself as the midfield team with the most potential to bridge the gap to the top 3 in the next 2-3 seasons (yes, I know this has been the narrative since 2018 give-or-take). They are delivering consistent upgrades at nearly every race, and the car is consistently receptive to almost all of the upgrades, so they know what they need to extract performance. They have been competitive at every single circuit configuration (P7 in Monaco, P5 in GB, and their highlights occur at rear-limited, power circuits such as Australia, Canada, and Austria; they should be lightning in Spa and Monza, and possibly Ricard). In the grand scheme of things, they are faster than Mclaren this year. Their engine has notably improved in terms of peak performance (they are wicked fast in power sensitive circuits and still reasonably competitive at high downforce circuits) and can focus on reliability upgrades in the coming seasons, which they have already started doing. You can look at Alonso’s season in 1 of 2 ways: the narrative that The-Race suggests, which is that Alpine is “squandering his talent,” or a narrative that suggests that Alpine has given Alonso his most competitive car in a freaking decade, at the beginning of a new regulation cycle. Recall that Alpine fired two prominent team members in the off-season, and hired Otmar as a replacement. This car hasn’t had any of Otmar’s touch in the preseason development cycle, and we know his qualities as a leader from FI/RP. Losing points in the top half of the midfield is frustrating, but it’s not the end of the world. If you think this season is anything but promising for Alpine, I think you’re twisting your opinions with recent historical bias.

I'd like to point out that if Alonso deserved the title in 2012 then Kimi deserved it in 2005. And whilst no other driver would have taken that red tractor anywhere close to a world title in the 12 season, its worth remembering the context of RB's garbage unreliable Renault engine and Mclaren who actually had the fastest car that year constantly shooting themselves in the foot at every opportunity. It was actually a blessing that Vettel's engine went pop in Valencia so we got to witness one of the greatest F1 races of all time later than year in Brazil. And as funny as it might sound Ferrari nailing their strategies in the 12 season was a big part of why Alonso challenged for the title that year, crazy how in ten years we've landed at the complete opposite situation. For the record, if you put Vettel or Hamilton in the 2012 Ferrari they'd have finished over 50 points behind the world champion. Alonso was truly special that year, its just that there was more context to things. Truth be told, at the end of the day ifs and buts mean nothing in competitive sport.

Fernando's "ifs" are the strangest and most unfortunate set of circumstances out of all the GOATs, Schumacher and Hamilton both won and lost titles they shouldn't have, generally equalling the 7 out. Alonso has had virtually no luck ever since Michael's engine blew at Suzuka in 2006, since then, he left McLaren when they won in 2008, lost 2 titles driving for Ferrari due to the teams incompetence, left Ferrari when they started to become competitive and fight for championships, left McLaren again when they started to fight for podiums between 19/20/21, I bet if he leaves Alpine now, they'll start winning lol.

In Singapur, Vertstappen would have probably passed him, and who knows what could have happened between Alonso and Norris, plus, who knows if Verstappen would have made a mistake when trying to pass Norris, if Alonso was there. But, if things went as they did, Verstappen falling behind, and Alonso remained behind Norris, he would be fighting with Sainz and Norris for a potential podium, he would have finished 7th at absolut worst if he finished Singapur, 3rd at absolut best, and that's not too much of a stretch. Both had success and consecutive world championships early on in their careers followed by a few glimmers of hope here and there, but they've never quite reached their former success and glory. Actually sad to think about given that they are both excellent drivers.

I hope he still has the ability to get his triple crown with an Indy 500 win at some point. Granted, Indy drivers seem to still be capable of winning late into their careers. I hate when people talk about "old man Alonso" because he's nearly the exact age as me (a few days difference)

I mean He was leading the indy 500 and got a DNF. Of course He is better than the other indy drivers and has already showed it. He can win it when He would have no problems at his next try. But in his short documentary "Fernando Alonso - One must fight" has He said that he isnt 100% sure, but He thinks that he doesnt want to go back to indy or to another professional driving after his F1 career. Sad but i think we have to accept that he has deserved his free time without racing. Let us just enjoy his last 1/2 years in F1 and wish him some good last races, He desveres it. Completest Driver of all time🙏

@@xImCrown well, the nice thing about the Indy 500 is it is just one race week in the long run. but if the triple crown isn't something he cares about, who am I to say otherwise

I think with the appointment of otmar and the budget cap being introduced, alpine ould be a genuine leader of midfield/ occasional capitalist given thar otmar has been getting the best out of the force India budget for years.

He is the smartest driver on the grid now with all his experience and him giving it everything. You can see it on the onboard vidoes and the smart tactics he uses in every race.

Alonso still a brilliant and very challenging pilot on a grid. Personally I really don't think Alpine is wasting Alonso. They both knew it would 'nt be easy to get back at a very honorable place in F1 concidering all the changes on the car this season right after Renault got back in F1. Alonso still lucky to have a wheel at his age. There a lot of rookies very talented nowadays. Beside the 2022 season isn't over and hopefully we will see him evoluat with Alpine cause if his quiting know where would he go ?
