It's not speaking bad about him, it's more of a concern. Alonso still has a title winning drive just not a title winning team. Most new teams, can take atleast 4-5 years to develop into title contenders. Aston will most likely use up both Seb and Alonso for development than rather competing. Who knows how long he stays, and 2026 regs effects, plus not having their own engine, and having an experienced knobhead as a teammate.
@Felyxx2 жыл бұрын
The way I see it, here are the biggest pluses and minuses: + Aston : Having a driver of Alonso's caliber there will not only provide valuable car development, but if they are smart enough to keep him beyond his racing career, he will help develop the car even further (other examples are Prost at Alpine, Lauda at Mercedes, etc) + Piastri : He is all but assured a drive in F1 next year + (and -) Alonso: He's moving to an inferior car. I'm sure he is getting an obscene amount of money for it. The pro on this is that if he has a 2-3 year deal he may well see the car score a few podiums towards the end, maybe even a win? Schumache was nearly 44 when he got his last podium. - (and a little +) Alpine: They are losing an incredible driver in Alonso. But they are still getting what seems to be a prodigy in Piastri - Ocon: To me Ocon hasn't always seemed like the fastest driver out there. He will be partnered against a rookie next year. The pressure will be to beat Piastri because if he doesn't he may not see a contract extension beyond 2024. - Williams : They were all but set to take Piastri and replace Goatifi. Let's hope they do still find a proper replacement for him. Maybe Nyck de Vries. Nyck really hasn't had much luck in this regard.

We do know Lawrence Stroll is very serious about making AM a championship competing and winning team and his capital investment is evidence of that. As an Alonso fan, I'm gutted. Alpine's concepts and design have shown good potential, their development has been as good as any outside the big 3 and Alonso was able to showcase his outstanding ability in as high positions as he is likely to for the remainder of his career. On the other hand: a) Otmar's statements have shown a coldness to Alonso b) their strategies have generally been as poor as Ferraris c) the reliability of Alonso's car hasn't been great d) Ocon seems more intent in beating Alonso than anyone else e) the team doesn't seem too bothered about maximising their point scoring positions at the expense of Ocon's feelings. f) Piastri is someone who Alpine can’t afford to lose Do I think Aston Martin represent a step up? I don't. Vettel who I don't think is at Alonso's level, was able to work with a winning Red-Bull and a Ferrari that challenged the Mercedes, but wasn't able to make headway at AM, so it will be tough to see Alonso being able to, as he just drives around problems and probably will take satisfaction destroying another team-mate. The reality is F1 is flawed. Always has been, but certainly since the late 80s/early 90s, access to a winning F1 seat is far too limited. That a driver with Alonso's freak abilities has spent the majority of his career in cars that are not able to challenge for wins shows the ultimate flaw in marketing F1 as a drivers series.

I can foresee that if De Vries gets the Williams seat, him and Alex would be a great pairing that's sorely needed by Williams on their path to rise in the constructor standings. In 2024 or 25, Alex may then consider moving back with the Red Bull family, or perhaps even get poached by either McLaren (to replace Danny Ric), Mercedes (~statistically non zero chance of Hamilton retiring), or Haas (if Mick makes the move to Ferrari). Happy for Piastri too who has been cooling his heels on the sidelines--hope they slot him into Alpine and maybe the likes of Logan will drive for Williams.
@joemills46032 жыл бұрын
I think this is generally a win for Aston Martin. Of the experienced drivers available, Alonso is probably the best bet and is unquestionably motivated by winning. Although there are questions over his ability to work harmoniously with teams, I think Aston will see an opportunity to get what they can from him. If it doesn't quite work, then there's probably a break clause. From Alonso's perspective, it's clear that Alpine are a bit of a structural mess, and I'm sure that Stroll makes a compelling argument with his winning mentality. Whether it actually works out is less sure. Alonso hasn't made the best judgements in his career, and I think he gets sucked-in by the emotions of it all.

Mclaren and Alpine and the other 4 teams will never win another championship until they invest as aggressively as AM are doing or we get a surprise like Brawn. AM are the only team I see making the the top 3 into a top 4, and hopefully Alonso can be there at the start similar to how Michael was there for the start of Mercedes.

Good move for AM not so good for Alo. If you remember Schumi never got to reap the benefits at Merc. AM isnt going to challenge till 25 or 26 at the earliest by which point Alo will be in his mid 40s.

Daniel ricciardos future at McLaren entirely depends on how badly Zak Brown wants to play with his new toy Colton Herta. You don't see a driver contracted to another team do testing for an f1 team with the driver pool McLaren have without fire. Herta's in the top tier of Indycar right now. He's the most marketable American driver in the world, and f1 will have 5 races in North America next year, he'd be the first f1 driver since Alexander Rossi a decade ago and the first full time American driver since Scott Speed. That's a massive financial opportunity for any team. And Ricciardo's performances haven't really warranted staying at a team looking to win races. I get his motivational issues "give me a car capable of winning and I'll win" but he's got to do at least ok in the meantime. He's been dreadful this season. If I was Ricciardo I'd go and try and win the triple crown. He's won the Monaco GP already. Go race for Toyota at Le Mans before the rules change and who wins is up in the air, and get a McLaren sp entry at IMS for the 500. Btw I'm not an American fanboy. But Zak Brown is.

@@valerierodger7700 the thing with McLaren is they've already got a winning driver in lando. Without Daniel at Monza and the rain in Sochi he'd be a double GP winner. They might as well make bank from their second seat. At least while they're trailing behind the top 3. Plus Herta is a really really exciting driver imo. I was a little harsh on Brown but he absolutely loves Colton.

@@AlfredTheGreatestEver Well it depends on if Andretti can get into F1. If they do, Colton will likely drive for them.
@AlfredTheGreatestEver2 жыл бұрын
@@imrandarr1094 Andretti aren't likely to enter F1. Certainly not any time soon. Certainly not before colton's window of opportunity closes. And being part of a joining team probably isn't what Herta would want. Guy wants to win races and championships. Andretti won't be able to provide that. Not without a manufacturer technical partnership. Those options are very small and basically gone now Porsche is buying 50% or red bull and Audi are teaming up with sauber. Herta would leap at McLaren if theirs a seat.
@RockSolitude2 жыл бұрын
Colton is only with another team as far as sporting codes go. Otherwise he's still with McLaren. You also have Pato O'Ward who has had several F1 tests with McLaren and is arguably the better driver in Indycar who's actually at the top of the sport (Colton is not the best in Indycar right now despite how many people are keen to fanboy the American). Would Colton be better than Ricciardo? Probably not unless Colton likes to drive Lando's set up.
@AlfredTheGreatestEver2 жыл бұрын
@@RockSolitude Colton and Landos driving style are more similar than lando and Daniels. Imo he's better than O'Ward. Colton's had a lot of bad luck this season, as has O'Ward. But the eye test tells me Herta is the more aggressive more exciting driver. And more likely than Pato to wow F1 fans. McLaren won't go for O'Ward for the simple reason that Sergio Perez is the more beloved Mexican driver, and Herta will attract more fans. Daniels the best driver out of the 3, but Herta's aggressive steering suits the characteristics of the McLaren car.

Anything can happen, and Alonso's seen more of Alpine's internals than any of us, but this looks like a bad career move. Alpine seems to have a good car concept this year, and has the better of McLaren at a bunch of tracks. one wonders whether Danny Ric will jump to get his old seat back at a team where he felt better in the car. Alonso staying isn't a tough one, but whether Danny ric should stay at McLaren is - it'd suck to jump ship again only to be way slower than ocon because the car has changed.

I feel like there could be some awesome performances next season with Alonso in the Aston Martin AMR23, but this is something that possibly won't end well. I feel like issues between Alonso and Lance could result in an early termination of the contract, at which time Alonso will want to find another time to finish up with.

"I have watched as the team has systematically attracted great people..." Did Laurence Stroll write that? Gotta hand it to Fernando. He's already got the AM marketing angle down pat. I've had high hopes for AM since the rebranding, and want them to succeed, and while I might be snarky about it I think this is a great move for both Fernonso and AM.
