when you said it shouldn't be possible for men/individuals to just be able to fork out money to be able to harass a girl/person who wasn't interested, i totally agreed. even in dating apps the rich can simply buy their way out of crimes (kind of a joke, but also not?)

I met my most recent ex at the chess club which, despite the fact that it didn’t work out, is a pretty good meet cute. We eventually both started running the club together while we were dating and he’s now the president. Didn’t work out because he’s an alcoholic but we are still very tight and play lots of chess together to this day :) Edit: should have added this, he’s an alcoholic but he’s also almost 100 days sober yayyyy

Just noting (because it's interesting) that "viral diseases" don't automatically lead to epidemics/pandemics as "viral" isn't a synonym for "fast-spreading", "widespread", "highly infectious", or anything like that. It just specifies that a particular disease is spread through viruses rather than bacteria. The difference is basically: Bacteria are single-celled living organisms that reproduce by cloning themselves (splitting into 2 bacteria identical to the original), while viruses are pieces of DNA (double-stranded) or RNA (similar to DNA, but single-stranded) that reproduce by hijacking cells in the host's body to create more viruses (using the original's genetic material). Bacterial diseases are treated with antibiotics, while viral diseases often can't be directly treated; instead, the symptoms are treated and the immune system has to fight off the virus. Sorry to hear about the breakup :/ I hope the heartache doesn't last too long. Much love

I'm so glad I met my husband organically, in the wild - we met through friends of friends in a music venue when I was 28 - we've been together for 10 years and married for 5 this year. I did try online dating before we met, but being 'alternative' meant I really struggled to find like-minded people. I imagine that's changed quite a lot in 10 years... but I still hate the idea of dating apps and it all being based on strategically chosen photos. However, I am going to a wedding this year, and they did meet on Tinder. So, there are SOME success stories out there! x

First of all, sending you all the love and support for the breakup! I also feel this shift of the view on dating apps, even though as a lesbian i feel like people in my community use it more, as a way to connect because it's hard to just go up to people out there, except at queer events. I've personally tried but never got into it, I think it's just not for me. I agree with the paying for dating apps being an ick, and it reminded me of a funny story I thought I'd share: I was friends with this guy, and I had suspected for a while he liked me but I was waiting for him to actually admit it. (Context: I still thought I was bi back then). One day, I was talking about a girl I had a crush on, and he starts showing me the dating apps he's been using, and he shows me he has the Tinder Gold subscription. To this day, I still don't know whether he was trying to impress me with this, but it never worked.

At about 14:50 you mention that the internet was smaller with fewer subcultures 10 years ago, and that internet experiences are more varied- that's nearly opposite the case! The internet was famously so diverse in terms of subcommunities and online spaces that there was a fear that there couldn't be a mainstream culture, that everything was niche. Things started really collating onto a few big social media websites as the 2010's went on, to the point that now is arguably the most monocultural the internet has been, with basically everyone using a small handful of websites.
@justthecoolestdudeyo94463 ай бұрын
This is not at all the point you were making, but just a thought about how perceptions of the past internet have changed.

3 weeks post break up here. i didn't even think about messy breakup vs cordial, but definitely in the gray zone of tapering out & finding right boundaries of what to discuss. feels weird. ♋️ season also think i'm not getting back on dating apps this time, especially after hearing stats of the state of the experience now (before listening to this episode). i've had 4 long term relationships from them & never been on them for like, longer than a month before meeting someone. maybe i'll see if they've declined as much as i hear, but the furthest thing from my mind in daily life presently. & looking forward to single time, no matter if i feel not the best presently.

i’m so super happy that you have this space all for yourself that feels like a SAFE SPACE! it immediately reminded me to finally read “A Room of One’s Own” by Virginia Woolf. for those who don’t know, it’s a feminist text about how a woman (writer in this case) needs a room or a space all to herself… anyway it’s super inspiring to see you achieve this and build a space for yourself…i would love to have a studio of my own someday 💞💞 i hope you will have lots of rest and healing soon, and i wish you all the strength and the patience to get through this breakup🫂🫂 remember, healing isn’t linear and no one is perfect. 💞🧿 also, i’m super happy to see you maintaining boundaries with us and not sharing anything that doesn’t feel right to share. i hope you know you don’t owe us anything that feels too heavy to share 🥹🥹♥️♥️ Love ya Jordan xx

i think one of the issues with dating apps is that they feed into the myth that everyone will have an immediate romantic connection with someone. when people start messaging, if they don’t feel a spark straight away then they give up and ghost. there is no way to develop relationships and build connections. this can be especially difficult if you’re introverted, bad at replying to messages etc. i met my partner on hinge and i think one of the reasons it was successful is because my profile clearly stated i was on there to make friends, so there wasn’t that immediate pressure when beginning to talk to each other. this also made it possible to develop a crush on each other and yearn!

Hmmmm being so icked out by someone paying for a dating app just because from the get go, is so incredibly judgemental, without even knowing what they're paying for. Was kinda shocked about that. I do think you're so right about how tinder uses the money for awful reasons, like being able to hound someone who very clearly isn't interested in you. That said, there a lot of things that dating apps can offer that would make paying for their service worth it.

There is this weird thing on the internet though where people make fun of you for not leaving your hometown and dating in that community...but due to COVID I ended up back in my hometown and started dating someone who also went to my k-12 school (but we didn't talk, though his brother was in my grade, and he was on my brother's sports teams when we were kids). I’m not sure I agree with being Tinder being universally accepted as a hook up app. I once met with a guy at his, had sex, and the next day when I said I had a nice time and would like to see him again, he said well we met on Tinder so he “assumed it was just a one time thing.” I didn’t wanna be his gf but I would have seen him again casually. Man it hurt. Because I wasn’t on the app just to hook up. I was trying to find someone. I don’t think it’s fair to assume everyone’s intentions for being on the app.

I just want to say thank you for your rant about the word "viral" lol. I watch a lot of beauty youtube and I'm SO TIRED of every makeup video titled "Trying these NEW VIRAL products!!!" Like babes the product launched today how is it viral? And also if every makeup youtuber does a "what's launching soon" video and they all talk about the same products launching that doesn't mean it's viral??? The word has no meaning anymore. And as a side note about screenshotting dating profiles -- there's a certain brand of snarky gay men who are very prevalent on Twitter who screenshot private DMs on gay dating apps and share them to make demeaning comments about the people they're chatting with and it is so tacky to me. God forbid if I'm ever single again it makes me not want to use the apps because some narcisisstic gay man on the other end could be posting our private conversations to twitter for fake internet clout. Like, have some class please.

Heya jordan, dunno if you're watching love island this year but I'd love if you'd break down the girls this year kinda like you did the male contestants. I've noticed this year (similar to last years winter season and summer 2022) that the girls don't really ever have that strong friendships > where the guys be quite amicable? There's just so much cattiness and even the so-called nice girls actually end up being quite rude/ mean in real life/ secretly. Like Mathilda this year having a go at the casa girls for no reason and idk if you heard but paige thorne in 2022 season (and the 4/10 coco situation). Then there's people like Olivia in winter 2023 and Jess this year > who were always a lil problematic. But I'll never get why some people (islanders) are so mean to the casa girls, EVERY year > especially when it's female islanders, cuz it's like, they didn't even do anything wrong > like go check your man before you speak to them. Idk where the attitude comes from, is it misogyny, is it just general nastiness, is it pick me behaviour due to low-self-esteem.
