The tech giant is way more than an e-commerce company at this point.
What do you get when you put one of the world’s largest companies, the planet’s richest man, and online shopping’s biggest network together? A formidable entity called Amazon that’s ready to take on the very world, that’s what.
Ever since it was launched in 1994, Amazon has been redefining old business genres while also introducing innovative transactional segments. From delving into online book sales to introducing a prolific ecommerce market, and from doubling down on media entertainment to going all in on artificial intelligence (AI), the tech conglomerate has done it all. That’s why, the assessment of Amazon market power doesn’t need a trigonometry lesson. When you hear the brand name, you instantly associate it with an omnipresent corporation that’s become integral to our lifestyle.
Many people term Amazon’s sheer hold across multiple business segments as the result of years of hard work by the company’s employees as well as its founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. But to others, the realization of how powerful is Amazon in almost every industry causes a deeply unsettling feeling. It’s the same feeling you have when you don’t have things under control, when you don’t have the power to keep your information private, or when you don’t have the freedom to choose between different service providers.
Diversification and Quality Are Key Factors to This Monopoly
Let’s face it. From its voice-assisted speaker Echo to its digital doorbell system Ring, and from your dependence on online shopping through Amazon.com to your preference for high quality groceries via Whole Foods, Amazon market power knows exactly how to make you feel comfortable with the services the company offers.
While it makes for a very good business model for the corporation that’s worth approximately $916 billion at the time of writing, it also creates a monopoly where it’s hard for anyone to break free from its outreach.
Whether you need next-generation AI services in home automation or if you want to experience same day delivery for online orders, Amazon has the resources and the team to make it all happen - which is something that its competitors can’t reach or execute as flawlessly. This makes it almost impossible for you to choose other vendors. After all, who doesn’t want best in line services even when they are a bit irked at how the company uses their information to enhance its operations?
Amazon is a True Global Conglomerate
Whether you live in the U.S. or in any other country that falls under the developed world, you are more than likely to see Amazon’s region-specific e-commerce services in full force. This means that even in those countries where Amazon doesn’t have its Ring doorbell systems or its Whole Foods stores, the tech conglomerate holds enough presence to offer you its star solutions in terms of online shopping.
There are still more than a few countries where almost none of Amazon’s services are available, of course. But for those territories, the corporation offers a system of international shipping. With over 100 countries on the list, Amazon’s international shipping model is making the company’s presence known in regions where it doesn’t even hold a presence for its operations.
In light of this immense outreach and a robust infrastructure that makes these steps possible, steps that no other corporation can execute this efficiently, Amazon is slowly taking over the world. And it is reaching the point where it can control it as well.
Amazon Pays Little to No Taxes. No Really, Its True
Besides its multi-billion dollar revenues and profits, the one thing that describes Amazon market power in the U.S. is how the company gets major tax breaks to the point where it pays little to no taxes.
That’s correct. Despite being one of the largest corporations in the world, Amazon pays less tax than you may do on your monthly paycheck at times. Doesn’t sound believable, does it? It’s absolutely true.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Amazon gets tax deductions and incentives by showing its investments in tech, research, and other related business models that are eligible for tax breaks and write-offs. As a result, while the company posts large scale revenues that rival the figures posted by Microsoft and Apple, it pays a very small amount of tax in select territories in the U.S. Speaking on the disconnect, Amazon stated that since it operates in a “low-margin industry” and invests in “innovation and infrastructure,” it doesn’t have much pretax profit, which in turn allows it to pay lower taxes.
Mind boggling? That’s not even half of it. Want to learn how powerful is Amazon when it comes to getting its way in taxes? Just knowing how the company successfully lobbied to kill a head tax in Seattle, Washington that would have increased its payable taxes is all you need to be aware about the company’s influence on government branches.
