One advantage Pulisic had when joining Dortmund at 16 was that his grandfather was Croatian so he was able to get an EU passport. Josh Sargent for instance, couldn't sign with Werder Bremen until after his 18th birthday

Yeah, UEFA is practicing protectionism under the guise of "preventing child trafficking". The US has the best tennis academies in the world but doesn't restrict foreigners from enrolling in them. It'd be crazy to consider that, for example, Sharapova was trafficked as a child because her parents enrolled her in the academy in Florida. Or similarly that students going to the best prep schools around the world are being trafficked by attending those schools. There are obviously other ways that are less Draconian and less "coincidentally" protective of European football dominance that UEFA could regulate the recruitment of those academy players to the national team of the country where the academy is located, if they so cared about that (although they don't seem to give a rat's ass when it's between two European countries, AFAIK).

@@lexkanyima2195 Fair point. Berhalter has the right idea. American players tend to run around in an attempt to impose physical dominance and to occupy space to take up passing lanes and force turnovers then use that dame athleticism to counter. It reminds me much of the English game but the English are far more intelligent and have a great understanding of positioning proportionate to the opposition and their teammates. Americans don't have this yet. We've seen Berhalter try to make this change but when you have two hardworking pressing eights who are more about encompassing that high energy and American work ethic as opposed to real technical passers its harder to implement such a strategy. This is not to say Adam's and McKennie aren't better in their positioning than players past but I think you get what I mean. The flaws we still have in our gameplan were really exposed against Mexico in the nation's league final. I get there were a turn of mitigating factors in that game such as national team rust but Mexico fell under that same trap and you can see their idea of positioning was much better.

Yes, still loads of gaps in process especially with major international contention (and getting bigger) in the college program which is a the primary MLS U23 feeding outlet. Academy limits recruiting as well where its become assumed they must have all the top talent which simply isn't true.

I'm not quite sure american players weren't technical in the past, Donovan was a "technical" player for instance... I remember in the 90s watching Tab Ramos playing in Betis club, he was a good player. To my mind the most important thing for a national team is finding an identity, a style. It takes time and the correct people in charge to organize everything and thinking about it. Check Menotti, the argentinian legend talking about how he tried to change the organization for the national team in the 70s, and winning the 78 World Cup... I'm from Spain and I'm aware of how much time, coaches, players and teams were needed to refine the formula that lead us to win the 2008 eurocup. You need to go step by step and having lots of patience and luck

I had two coaches in high school, one played for the Metro Stars, the other spent time with the LA Galaxy and was even capped once. Both ended up coaching high school and teaching full time after retirement because pay wasn't nearly what it is now. I'm sure that made a big difference in their generation! I wasn't a kid who was going to go pro, but with my family circumstances, I could hardly get a ride to a club game let alone afford higher quality club fees, even with scholarships it was a tough swing so I didn't even bother. I played some college D3, but I definitely had some animosity towards those elite club players growing up. Glad to see things changing for the better.

Very informative and clear, well done video. The problem with US Soccer teams is the delta between the good starters and the worst bench players. Contrast with Italy where the staring players and 5 players deep into the bench there is almost no drop in player level. In the US teams, if they had to go 5 players deep... it would be painful. There is talent there, but there isn’t consistency - you cannot bet all hopes on 3-5 players and hope the other 6-9 don’t screw up too badly on any given day. Plus, an off day to one of the few top guys and the bags get packed the next day since there isn’t anyone to pick up the slack.

Dest, Pulisic, Reyna, Davies (even though he is from Canada), De La Fuente and McKennie are best soccer talents from North America. I hope these incredible players could improve not just the USA team but also the american sports system.

One thing you miss about the system is going back to the high school level when players are 14 to 18. In the US they are playing for coaches who's primary job is being a teacher and coaching is just a side thing they do and they are playing against people who have no real aspirations of becoming a pro-player. Whereas in Europe they are playing against a lot of the best players in their age group all with pro-aspirations and they are being coached by people who's primary job is to coach soccer. Than you move on into college while they might have a person who's only job is to coach soccer they are still playing against mostly people who have no pro-aspirations. So when they graduate at 22 they have only had 4 years of professional coaching and have maybe played against a few players with pro-aspirations. Whereas in Europe a 22 year old player has played for a decade or more against the best players in their age group and constantly had professional level coaching.

5:15 This is mostly wrong. There are no "Club Owners" for most academies. Its a completely different style than Europe. Most of the "academies" are specific youth organizations with no professional team. THAT is why you have to pay. The entire business is coaching youth players, so they have to make money doing that, whereas professional team academies can lose money as long as they are producing cheap talent for the professional team. These professional academies can also turn into money-makers by selling players, which further funds the academy. MLS teams now have this kind of professional academy and some of the lower league teams (like in USL) are also developing them. They generally do not have to worry about losing players for nothing because the players are under contract. As long as the teams show they are willing to sell the player when they want, players are incentivized to sign a contract to get access to better training and competition. This wasn't the case when guys like Pulisic were coming through. He had an EU passport, so with the option of going to Europe at 16, he didn't have to sign with an MLS team that probably would have kept him through the length of the contract because the emphasis wasn't on selling players like it is now. But as much as MLS academies are getting better, the youth-only academies aren't. The 2019 MLS reform only applies to MLS academies. Note how it was MLS that made the announcement and not US Soccer. MLS is doing it because they want to make money on solidarity payments for the players they sell while also not having to pay training compensation to the youth-only academies. And the issue of training compensation and solidarity payments is much bigger than stated here. Again, we are not Europe and do not use a model like the one FIFA regulations were built around. We have clubs that train players, but players also play for their school. Are teams expected to pay the player's middle school and high school for developing the player? Can the schools even legally accept the money? And wouldn't the whole system run amok of child labor laws? These are all questions we have to figure out before we can implement the system. And then there is the argument whether it is even beneficial considering it can act as a tax on a player transfer. If American players do not have that tax, does it make them more appealing for foreign clubs? If so, that can help our players get to the highest level clubs and play against the best competition. So is it better for fewer players to be trained, but have a better shot at moving to the top clubs in Europe, or to have more players trained, but maybe not have as many playing internationally? And we used the college system for a long time because that was an existing pathway while MLS didn't have academies because they were not financially viable yet. It also just didn't make sense from a player perspective. If they signed with an MLS team, they would lose their ability to get a college scholarship. Like you said, the money early on was such that players still had to work after retirement. In that case, a college scholarship and the increased career earnings that come with a college degree were worth more than whatever small salary they could get from going pro early. This is now changing and the importance of the college draft is rapidly diminishing.
@mattmexor2882
@mattmexor2882 Жыл бұрын
I imagine the academy system also only developed American players. MLS teams will have incentive to look for talent internationally, largely from other Concacaf countries. I'm guessing MLS clubs should have more money than most South American clubs and a shallower local talent pool than the rich South American clubs. So MLS academies will be responsible for developing talent from other Concacaf countries that currently isn't being developed well. MLB and MLB money develops so much baseball talent from the Caribbean, for example. Once there is a conduit for talent from these Concacaf countries to lucrative deals with MLS clubs it will raise the level of soccer in those Concacaf countries. That should strengthen Concacaf which will be a good thing for the USMNT program. Playing regularly as a team against higher quality opponents will increase our success in big international tournaments.

This is pretty simple, when you break it down: In the US, it's MUCH easier and much less EXPENSIVE to play other sports that will pay you more as a "professional". Should you be good enough to make it that far. MLS can pay a decent wage but not compared to internationally (and compared to the big 4 sports in North America. Even Hockey). Also...our (US) BEST athletes tend to gravitate towards the "Big 3": Football (US), Baseball and Basketball. ESPECIALLY minorities who tend to come from poorer backgrounds. It will ALWAYS be an up-hill struggle for the US to produce "world-class" teams, vis-a-vis the rest of the world.

This is why Germany is so big for us over other leagues like Ligue 1 or La Liga, who both allow only three non-EU spots, but offer exemptions for most African players.

Soccer is the second most watched sport among the 18 to 34 year old demographic. It’s problem is that viewership is divided among MLS, Liga MX, Premier League, Bundesliga …

I really want America to make a deep run in the World Cup. For too long has American sports culture caused me to be bullied (sometimes) for playing football in the U.S and if the U.S show that they can compete with the bigger nations, than it will foster a better culture and break the stigma surrounding football in America

Finally someone who understands this. America's lack of an Academy system is the reason why the US struggles at international tournaments. But I doubt that America would adopt the Academy because the NCAA would miss out on the revenue since most players would opt for Academy over going to College. Just to note, for women's soccer, the College System is perfect because the majority of the student body is female (~60%). For men's soccer, when places like the UK, Germany, Netherlands allow 16yr olds to make their club debuts. It would make no sense to go to college first because by the time you are eligible for club football, the Jesse Lingards and Phil Jones have had more game time and more time to improve their technical ability.

Hi, I think your videos are good. I'm writing about how you use the word: America or American. I have always defended the usage of this word as to describe people of North and South America. The US is a country in a continent name America, the continent is divided into two hemispheres hence North and South. In this manner just as people from England or Spain are described as Europeans, it is common sense that people from the US and Brazil are both Americans. Historically, the only reason people in the United States called themselves Americans was due the British using the term "American" to label people from the continent as inferior. In fact, the first maps of the continent drawn by Americo Vespucci depicted mostly the southern hemisphere. Maybe this is not such a big deal but it is plain wrong and the result of Propaganda and misinformation

Interesting that MLS/US Soccer/SUM allowed FiFA compensation right around the time they formed MLS Next. Lol. The corruption continues. In order to end pay-to-play: End the MLS Club with its franchises, and open the market to autonomous clubs. Incentive drives investment.
