In recent years, the world has witnessed a resurgence of great power competition, characterized by escalating tensions and rivalries among leading nations.
As countries expand and modernize their nuclear arsenals, concerns about global security and stability are more pressing than ever.
In this evolving geopolitical landscape, the importance of nuclear deterrence and maintaining a robust and reliable nuclear triad has never been more critical.
But what exactly is nuclear deterrence? And what is a Nuclear Triad?
Nuclear deterrence relies on the threat of significant retaliation to prevent adversaries from launching a nuclear attack. Since the mid-20th century, this strategy has played a crucial role in ensuring that nuclear weapons are never used in conflict.
A key component of the strategy is the nuclear triad, which consists of three types of nuclear weapon delivery systems: land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles for the land leg, submarine-launched ballistic missiles for the sea leg, and strategic bombers for the air leg.
Each leg of the triad provides unique capabilities and strengths, ensuring that the United States can maintain a credible and effective nuclear deterrent under any circumstances. This three-pronged approach makes it nearly impossible for an enemy to destroy all the U.S.'s nuclear capabilities in a single strike, preserving a credible deterrent and discouraging potential rivals from launching a nuclear attack.
We'll look at the current US arsenal and how the country is modernizing its nuclear triad through the advancements managed by the US Air Force and US Navy. These advancements include Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), strategic bombers, and Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs). We'll explore how enhancements like the Sentinel LGM-35A ICBM, set to substitute the Minuteman III, the B21 Raider bomber, and Columbia class of submarines ensure the United States maintains a credible and effective deterrent. Additionally, we'll discuss new nuclear weapons like the AGM-181A Long Range Standoff Missile (LRSO) and the B61-12 and B61-13 nuclear bombs.
