How America’s Perpetual Warfare Abroad Is Fueling an Increase in White Supremacist Violence in U.S.

democracynow.org - America’s perpetual warfare abroad has led to an increase in white supremacist violence at home. That’s one of the key findings in Frontline PBS and ProPublica reporter A.C. Thompson’s new investigation, “Documenting Hate: New American Nazis,” which premieres Tuesday evening on PBS. The documentary reveals the deep ties between the military and white supremacy, as Thompson examines the Pittsburgh shooting and the rise of violent hate groups such as Atomwaffen. Thompson interviews historian Kathleen Belew, who says there has always been a correlation in the U.S. between the aftermath of war and the rise of white supremacist violence. “If you look for instance at the surges in Ku Klux Klan membership, they align more consistently with the return of veterans from combat and the aftermath of war than they do with anti-immigration, populism, economic hardship or any of the other factors that historians have typically used to explain them,” she notes. We speak with A.C. Thompson in Boston. His investigation premieres Tuesday on PBS stations and online.

Some soldiers already have a certain "authoritarian", violent, "supremacist" mindset that makes them join the army and go into combat in the first place. So the whole reasoning here is upside down: the "war abroad" (justified or not - this is not the question here) is not at fault per se. But some people who were involved in the war abroad and later extremist, right-wing terrorist groups in the US, are drawn to these activities because *by nature and nurture (this is a spectrum!) they are inclined towards those actions*. The left (I am part of it) is afraid of blaming people`s nature/nurture (again: it is a spectrum) for the things that go wrong in our world. To be that oblivious is dangerous for our society. Problems have to be faced without fear in order to be tackled and overcome. The *"authoritarian personality"* resulting from a mix of nature/nature (which is on a spectrum) *is the problem to be tackled*.

We know the answer to why there is a slower or more restrained response to white nationalism and the white power movement by our official organs of our government. "Those who work forces, are those who burn crosses." The members of the white nationalist movement speak a language and have familiar sentiments to those throughout many sectors of our local, state and government. White supremacy is a tradition of America's social, political and economic power structure. There is a large segment of the white populous who deeply resents and are willing to fight and kill to protect that power structure. We all know that this style of white supremacy isnt isolated to angry white youths. We know that elected officials, local, state and federal police administrators and millions of others historically have held the same sentiment as those who act them out violently. White people as an ethnic group need to address the value of white supremacy to themselves personally and the country as a whole. Have an open and honest discussion within their community about its merit and place in the American culture.

It's actually quite ironic because in Gore Vidal's book Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace criticizing not only our warmongering but also false flag attacks there is a chapter where Mr. Vidal discusses a corespondence he had with McVeigh and how he had offered to get McVeigh released because he was clearly innocent.
