In my area of Anaheim California, I was one of the First girls in my hood to get Custom made Van’s back in the 70’ when I went to St, Boniface Catholic School. Yup True story. We had one of the Very First “Van’s Tennis Shoe Stores” right down the street from my home in Downtown Anaheim California. Everybody over here wore them back in the “70’s & on.” Man I miss my Van’s 😭😭😭😭 I can’t ware them any more because of my spinal problems & it Bites 😭😭😭😭😭

Vans actually also had a big mainstream resurgence and now aren’t “rocker/skater” shoes anymore and are just anyone wears them shoes in 2007 bc of The Pack song “Vans”
@kevincollins8620 Жыл бұрын
Correct. This bugs the hell outta me but it's cool to see everyone wearing them now. I'm born in the 80s and grew up a skater and would take everything a few amateur pro skateboarders would say early 90s for gospel. The puffy vans with fat laces what we wore. Now you can't find em, except for the odd collab here and there.

I have been wearing a version of those checkerboard Vans since high school. I've probably went through 10 pairs over the years.
@kevincollins8620 Жыл бұрын
I've kept a pair around since 2002. But before then I cared only for the puffy vans and puffy skate shoes. Those were popular in my era if you were born in the 80s. The old skool and authentic didn't hit stride again until the early 2000s in the music scene. In the early 2000s Geoff Rowley on vans was one of the few who wanted a slimmer shoe and even his first few are puffy somewhat

I'm a huge sneaker guy and I did it with a pair of shoes John Mayer had in the new light video. I think I did as a kid for George of the jungle. Definitely got into classic vans after finally seeing Jeff Spicoli in slip ons as a young adult after high school. Back to the future also made me love Nike all my life and want those shoes and was the first shoe I really wanted. As an older guy Asap rocky in Jeremy Scott bones also made me want em. If they aren't common and everyone isn't on them... that does it for me.

@@weirdalfan37for me all the stuff I grew up on. Hanna Barbara cartoons, 90s shows, music. Extreme sports. Sports have always been around for me. I grew up in Connecticut so boating and light houses and seasons have always been important and a chance to change it up. Movies definitely had a big impact. Back to the future got me into nike. Books as well. I use my influences to change my looks up day to day. One day it might be jordans camo pants and a denim bulls jacket (basic boys) the next it might be plaid golf pants cashmere sweater with a plaid windbreaker and a wool hat. The next umbro shorts and some adidas. I'm all over the board.

Fun fact: Vans actually became a skateboarding shoes company after they got popular with skaters, that's one of the reasons they are a bit uncomfortable to walk in, they have flat hills designed to help skaters feel the board better and have better control, but they have zero support for walking because they weren't designed for that

I mean if your dad was into cool sub culture surely he heard of the zephyr gang and them blue kicks. And they originally made deck shoes so it was an extremely versatile cheap sneaker. And they supported the BMX guys like crazy. Dudes like Brian Scura were sponsored wore them wild freestyle bike outfits and made the shoes look Rad. I really know my Vans history.
