@@anja1627 quite true. Additionally, it’s not like in 476 when western Rome collapsed everyone stopped being Roman. The western center of power simply disappeared, and odoacer, the “Germanic barbarian” who conquered Rome, was essentially Roman himself. He was in the Roman army, trained by them, lived in a roman province, spoke their language. He swore fealty to be a vassal of sorts to the eastern emperor so he would not be bothered, controlling both germany and Italy. Places like Spain and France (Hispania AMD Gallia) which were anchored to the power center of Rome itself, broke off into separate kingdoms but still maintained relations, still spoke Latin.

An important note: lead pipes are not necessarily dangerous and can be safe: its really more or less the chemistry of the water you put through them. In much of the world, water is alkaline and has high levels of calcium carbonate dissolved in the water: this builds up on the pipe and gives a protective coating that prevents lead exposure. If you have an acidic water source it will slowly dissolve the pipe and send it out the tap. It's why Flint used lead pipes for years without issue, but then had major problems with contamination once they switched to an acidic water source.
@kevinrwhooley94394 жыл бұрын
Here in Ireland most of our old houses have water transported by lead pipes made in the 1970s. Our government tried to remedy this by introducing a water tax so that they would have enough money to replace all these pipes but it was struck down by far-left groups. So most of our water is transported by lead pipes and we're the only European country not to have a water tax.
@kevinrwhooley94394 жыл бұрын
@Jeff Yeh The government claims the level of lead isn't too high to be toxic, though as this video has stated, no amount of lead is safe. Despite their assurances, the government still recommends you boil your tap water prior to drinking, unless it has been through a specially made filter.

Many left wing people were for the bill but weren't as vocal. I would say both the far left and far right want us to die. Also it's ironic that you say this when right wing people, like Ben Garrison, are actively discouraging the use of facemasks and vaccines as well as environmental regulations. So if I was a hardcore lefty I could argue the right wants us to die as well.

@deewesthill13583 жыл бұрын
The word "plumbing" comes from "plumbum", Latin for lead, seen in the abbreviation Pb used for it on the periodic chart of the elements. Lead pipes were used by other cultures too, so many other civilizations might have been undone by lead. Betting on the gladiatore at the Colosseum while enjoying a sapa ice on a hot summer day. The "bread and circuses" part of Rome was fun. There was no place like it in it's day.

The title immediately clued me into lead sugar. Hearing about sapa confused me, but surprise surprise: that's pretty much what it is. Or part of it, rather.

I'm confused about the recipe mentioned at the beginning. The video said sugar is involved, but sugar wasn't introduced to Europe until the Elizabethan era when it was brought back from the Americas. Did he mean honey or another natural sweetener?

One year before Nriagu argued that lead poisoning caused the fall of Rome, Saul Bellow suggested the same in his 1982 novel The Dean's December.

Allegedly ancient Rome did not have refined sugar. Honey was the primary sweetener, boiled syrups from unfermented grape juice dried figs & other dried fruits. The ancients concept of sweetness was not the same as what we think of as sweet today. Not even several minutes in and several aspects of that clip didnt make sense or add up.

"Then one day, it all collapsed." Ugh, no it didn't work like that. The Western Roman Empire spent centuries in decline and we have pretty good records on the events that took place. We may still debate the underlying weaknesses that led to the decline, but don't make it sound like Rome disappeared without a trace like Brigadoon. The lead hypothesis isn't particularly compelling either, since it fails to account for Huns, Goths, Vandals, Lombards, and so on who played such a big documented role in the centuries leading up to 476 AD (the year usually cited for the end of the Western Roman Empire, because a Goth took the throne, not because the empire disappeared without a trace).

Same thing is currently happening to us with high fructose corn syrup. My life changed this past year getting off that stuff. My chronic pain I’ve suffered for over 10 years from due to an injury is just about gone. I went from a size 18-6 without doing anything else to my diet but kick the high fructose corn syrup. All the research I found since 1977 when it was introduced with the farm supplements agrees.
