Thanks for this explanation. I do think that it's not the planetary gearing that is difficult to understand but how hydraulic pressure is used to control the clutches and how this interacts with the planetary gear system. The structure of the clutch packs is also complex and worthy of a model.

Best animation and illustration seen till now for explaining automatic transmission. You know, it will be even better if you show the same animation while taking a quarter section to show the ring gear movement before showing each section alone. It will make it more understandable. ***** i read an article at HowStuffWorks. Yes, there are electrical sensors and it's common now. Before they exist, they have a mechanical air-pressure detecting system to detect if the engine works so hard, and detects which clutch gear is hold. If the certain pressure is reached, a valve opens automatically to pump air to make the clutch work, just like how you manually use brakes. Wow I learnt so much starting from this video!

I rebuilt my first, a Ford 3 speed, in high school. Believe it or not, even the new ones aren't that difficult to build. It's a matter of putting it all back together in the same order as it went in with all parts inspected and troublesome or worn ones replaced, and making sure your clearances are set correctly.Troubleshooting one is more difficult because it takes a greater understanding. This video was a random recommendation and I feel the author did a great job showing the Allison 1000. Take in mind, there are many, many different automatics out there with differing parts and methods.

Just add the ratio of one set to the other, if you really want to do it. By the way, to calculate ratios we use teeth amount, not diameter or size.

I must agree with Soylant - your explanation and animation present a genuine learning opportunity. Brownie points earned for not claiming that this is an 'easy to understand' gearbox. However, you did make the 'general concept' easy to understand, whilst at the same time providing the detail, that can be repeat watched. In effect, you managed to kill two birds with one stone. I could watch this one with my son (the benchmark)... whereas the 'learn engineering' vid was a complete fail, as witnessed by the comments (mine included). I think I'll go back and edit my post to add a link to this vid and Thomas Schwenke 's vid (describing a simpler setup).

I don't understand how the sun gear turns faster on P2 for gear 6 than it does for gear 5. Are you sure you got this right? Or should the configuration for gears 5 and 6 be switched?
@tcarni21
@tcarni21 5 жыл бұрын
@@dowskivisionmagicaloracle8593 Let me try. In gear 5 and 6, the sun gears turn freely and the planetary gears drive the sun gear. For gear 5 and 6, the output to P3 is the sun gear, not the carrier, and that`s why things change a little. In both cases, the faster the sun gear turns, the faster the final output will be. Imagine that the planetary gears and ring gear are turning at the same speed (like a 4th gear). In this case, the sun gear will spin with the same velocity as the other 2 gears, right? Now imagine that the ring gear is a little bit slower than the planetary gears. In this case, the sun gear need to spin a little bit faster (in relation to the ring gear, since the planetary gears have the same velocity as before) and that`s what happens. Before, the planetary gears were not spinning, just turning. If the ring gets slower, but the planetary gears don`t, they have to start spinning. The bigger the difference in the speed between the ring gear and the planetary gears, the faster the planetary will spin and the faster the sun gear will rotate. In gear 5, since the P2 ring is also rotating in the same direction, the relative velocity between the ring and planetary gears is not that great. In gear 6, the ring is stationary, so the difference between the speeds are bigger...

Thank you sir, I have a question. 9:13 Applying C5 will only prevent the planet gears of P2 from turning. They can still spin. Since the planetary carrier of P1 is connected to the ring gear of P2, I wonder if the motion of P1 will pass to P2 through that path, making the planet gears of P2 to spin, resulting a reverse gear instead of a neutral one. Please correct me if I am wrong :(

Thanks for your kind words. I always follow whatever the owner's manual says, which in this case they always recommend putting the selector in "park" and apply the handbrake whenever you park your car. The parking pawl is made to be used and should last the life of the vehicle. Don't be afraid of wearing that.

This is old, but no it doesn't. I have thrown old Ford and GM transmissions into park while moving at speed, and could hear the pawl grinding itself down, and that still didn't do enough to destroy it when I opened it up to inspect. That is one part I have never had to replace on a rebuild and I haven't heard of anyone else having to either. My experience is primarily with rear wheel drive American brand transmissions though. Once it's engaged, it's engaged and not going anywhere.

@interlinkknight
@interlinkknight 7 жыл бұрын
The answer is no. If the C2 clutch is engaged it would make the ring gear of the planetary gear set #3 (P3) turn with the input, and the C5 clutch blocks the ring gear of P3, so if you engage C2 and C5 you would lock/block everything. Is hard to follow the energy path, but watch carefully a few times and you will get it.

I am glad I could help. Although I doubt I will ever make a video about other transmissions with more speeds because is hard work making the 3D model and the animation. I made this 3D model because I wanted to 3D print it someday to make it work in real life (small scale). After I had the 3D model, I realize I could make the animation and make a video explaining how it works. Also, if we all have a hard time understanding this basic/simple Allison transmission, can you imagine how hard would it be trying to understand the 8th speed transmissions? I've seen them from inside. Those are crazy complex.

If there was a P4 instead, would the sun hear of P4 also be connected to the sun gear of P3-P2, and the result would give you an eight-speed transmission? If so, does this continue to scale by two’s? Additionally, is P1 special only because you want to gain reverse? If reverse was not desired, would you be able to simplify the design?

OK so I kind of get how the gears work and how the torque converter works but how does the car know when to change gear? BTW great video's

wow definitely I have to watch a number of times before I get it, but my question is once in neutral and at high speed when the vehicle is on, is it ok to go back to drive, or will the transmission get damaged?
@interlinkknight

As far I know it would not damage the transmission. I've done it and my transmission is fine

For P1, P2, and P3 to engage individually they each need a multiplate clutch?
@interlinkknight
@interlinkknight 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are 5 clutches in total: 3 for each planetary gear set and 2 for the input

Is there direct metal-to-metal contact of the torque-transmitting gear surfaces? Or, are they separated by a thin layer of tranny fluid? Why is there is hydraulic pump to up-pressure the tranny fluid?
@interlinkknight
@interlinkknight 5 жыл бұрын
There's fluid everywhere. The pump keep the fluid moving

Can you make a video for the 3-speed double planetary set in say a Toyota 2000?
@interlinkknight
@interlinkknight 4 жыл бұрын
That would be cool but I have many projects I'm working on, so maybe in the future. I encourage you to make it yourself, maybe with Fusion 360. It's easy to use, free and you can do basically anything. Give it a try!

Can someone who knows the tautomatic transmission better answer to me: When I visualize it, it sounds like transmitting the power through all these gears wastes lots more energy compared to gear-wise much simplier manual transmission. Am I correct?

This is a very good and well explain presentation I just wonder how people give thumb down without taking the time to analize what is given free of charge ,they should go back to elementary school to see if they could learn from (0). thanks again .

The problem with this and most other videos about automatic transmission is that they don't explain why this kind of planetary gear design is more suitible to be automated than the mechanisms of a traditional manual transmission.

I don't understand how the sun gear turns faster on P2 for gear 6 than it does for gear 5. Are you sure you got this right? Or should the configuration for gears 5 and 6 be switched?

+InterlinkKnight No, seriously. If for gear 5 the ring gear and sun gear are turning at input speed for P2 whereas for gear 6 ONLY the sun gear is turning at input speed how can the result possibly be faster?
@interlinkknight
@interlinkknight 5 жыл бұрын
P2 on 6th gear: - Ring static; - Carrier spinning with the input; - Sun gear going a lot faster than the input. P2 but now in an alternative situation: - Ring gear spinning with the input; - Carrier spinning with the input; - Sun gear going at the same speed as the input. Can you fill the gap in between both situations? What happens if the ring turns a little instead of a lot? Well, the sun gear would turn faster than the input but not as much as if the ring would be static.
