Thank you for the explanation on the workings of a water heater, this is a video all homeowners should view. I’m from California and have been in so many earthquakes I lost count but two stand out as memorable for me, the 1987 Whittier Narrows quake 5.9 magnitude. I lived in Whittier and was standing, getting ready for work and when the quake came up from the ground and felt like a giant sledgehammer was pounding the floor beneath my feet. Next came the shaking which made the walls of my house look like it was made of jello. The energy that quake released was unforgettable. 2nd quake was the 1994 Northridge quake, 6.7 magnitude, about 48 miles from Whittier where I lived. This quake was about 20 seconds of intense shaking up and down AND side to side that separated a major beam in the house that literally allowed me to see daylight through the wall. My small stereo on a shelf unit was completely turned around and facing the wall afterwards, yet never fell off the shelf. Nowadays we’re like your neighbors and barely pause to acknowledge anything less than a 5 magnitude 😏

Really good video - especially compared to the garbage Lowes and Home Depot have put on KZbin on this topic. I was looking for a video I could have my apprentice watch to learn about water heaters and I think I will ask him to watch this one. A couple things to mention: The seismic strap on the water heater in this video is not installed according to manufacturer instructions, which call for 2 straps - one installed within the top 1/3rd of the water heater and the 2nd installed within the bottom 3rd. The other thing to mention is that Canadian code requires water to be stored at a minimum of 140 degrees F and delivered from the shower at no greater than 120 degrees F. I understand that US codes often allow for storage at a minimum of 120 degrees F to prevent unacceptable levels of bacteria growth (or more accurately, to achieve an acceptable bacteria kill level within a certain amount of time). In Canada, we either control the water temperature that comes out of our showers/baths by adjusting the integral temperature limiters within the shower valve, or we install a whole home mixing valve which blends cold water into the hot water leaving the water heater. In the special cases of a seniors home or a daycare center code here requires a whole home mixing valve because ALL faucets must be limited to no hotter than 120F. One other note is that the piping materials of the discharge tube of a water heater should be rated for up to 210 degrees F, which is the relief valve temperature setting. A couple other things that might have been good to discuss is the information related to potable water expansion tanks - how to set them up, how to diagnose them, how to install them, where they are required and not required, etc. Also, some information about vacuum breakers and their role in this job would be helpful as well.

Well thought out video, and thanks. I'm just getting into how a water heater works as to its wiring and switching. Again, thank you, I was unaware that the top element came on first, so that explains a lot of things when I am doing switching continuity checks. It seems that the top themostat is the boss and when it is satisfied it opens the switch to the top element, and at the same time closes the power switch to the e bottom themostat, which then engages the bottom element. So the top themostat operates also as an A B switch, or a Flip/Flop switch. Keep up the good work, and by the way "Great Video Voice." FR

My hot water line is leaking. I had the water heater off, because of the summer, here in FL. If I close the cold water , using the turning valve level, will that stop the water dripping until the plumber comes?
@WordofAdviceTV2 жыл бұрын
Turning off the cold water would slow down the leak until the water level in the tank gets below the leak location and then it will stop. If the leak is above the water heater, then the leaking should stop pretty quickly after the remaining water in the pipes leaks out.

Question: once the thermostat is satisfied and shuts off the heating element, how many degrees will temperature drop before heating element turns back on? Or does it just wait for another call for hot water before it turns back on?
@WordofAdviceTV3 жыл бұрын
I believe those are +/-5% so if your thermostat is set to 120, it would come on when the water temp drops down to about 114 and turn off after it heated the water to about 126.
@lenkiatleong9 ай бұрын
Thanks for this outstanding video. When the water heats up, pressure in the tank rises and water may drip out from the PRV. At this moment, the tank pressure is probably >150 psi. The questions are, 1) why the pressures at the cold and hot pipe outside the tank are not as high as inside the tank? 2) how much pressure will be at the cold and hot pipe right outside the tank? 3) i understand that an expansion tank can absorb the extra water but isn't it enough for the home pipe volume to absorb the extra volume? 4) will the expansion tank prevent the heater PRV from being activated?
@leroyusa935 Жыл бұрын
I still believe that natural gas water heaters are more efficient than electric water heaters. The most efficient ones are the rooftop solar convection systems, but are expensive and need periodic maintenance. In certain areas electric power is expensive and prone to outages. Thanks for this educational and preventative maintenance video.

My AO Smith 50 Gal water heater is only a few months old. When we installed it the power was turned in before it was filled with water. I replaced the top element which was burned up. I ohmed out both elements and are about 13 ohms. The temp is set at 123 on both regulators. With nobody using any hot water in the previous 48 hours. When we try to fill up our top we run out of hot water ( maybe 25 gal tub) when it is about 1/3 full. Any suggestions on why this is the case would be appreciated. Excellent!! Videos . Thank you!

What is all that sediment from? Isn’t this potable water coming in?
@harryvanderveen773 Жыл бұрын
Google said: Tap water contains several minerals, including calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and phosphorus. It also contains trace elements, such as copper, iron, selenium, chromium, and zinc. So, when the water is heated, the minerals separate and float down to the bottom of the tank where the create sediment.

I'm looking at upgrading from a water heater with 4500 watt elements to one with 5500 watt elements. I have 10 gauge wire going to the heater for a 240 volt circuit. Is that enough? Rheem's table asks for the total wattage of the water heater, but I'm not sure whether that's 11000 or 5500 watts since they don't run simultaneously.
