Well thought out video, and thanks. I'm just getting into how a water heater works as to its wiring and switching. Again, thank you, I was unaware that the top element came on first, so that explains a lot of things when I am doing switching continuity checks. It seems that the top themostat is the boss and when it is satisfied it opens the switch to the top element, and at the same time closes the power switch to the e bottom themostat, which then engages the bottom element. So the top themostat operates also as an A B switch, or a Flip/Flop switch. Keep up the good work, and by the way "Great Video Voice." FR

Thanks for this outstanding video. When the water heats up, pressure in the tank rises and water may drip out from the PRV. At this moment, the tank pressure is probably >150 psi. The questions are, 1) why the pressures at the cold and hot pipe outside the tank are not as high as inside the tank? 2) how much pressure will be at the cold and hot pipe right outside the tank? 3) i understand that an expansion tank can absorb the extra water but isn't it enough for the home pipe volume to absorb the extra volume? 4) will the expansion tank prevent the heater PRV from being activated?
@Shamiyusif3 жыл бұрын
I would recommend to have a shutoff valve on both cold and hot line . In case of maintenance it will be helpful. Moreover you may check the incoming water quality and the pipe material . The copper pipe could replaced with PPR to avoid the corrosion and dielectric effect

@spacecoastkid50338 ай бұрын
You don't need a shutoff on the hot side if the cold is off. The pressure on the cold side is what pushes the hot water out. Also, it would be pretty dangerous of the hot side was turned off while the tank was still on.

@leroyusa935 Жыл бұрын
I still believe that natural gas water heaters are more efficient than electric water heaters. The most efficient ones are the rooftop solar convection systems, but are expensive and need periodic maintenance. In certain areas electric power is expensive and prone to outages. Thanks for this educational and preventative maintenance video.

The water is under pressure (usually 50-60psi) so when you open any faucet the water is basically getting pushed out.

My hot water line is leaking. I had the water heater off, because of the summer, here in FL. If I close the cold water , using the turning valve level, will that stop the water dripping until the plumber comes?
@WordofAdviceTV Жыл бұрын
Turning off the cold water would slow down the leak until the water level in the tank gets below the leak location and then it will stop. If the leak is above the water heater, then the leaking should stop pretty quickly after the remaining water in the pipes leaks out.

Jay, more than half the videos I have watched and according to Rheem water heaters, as you know, when hot water is turn on, and cold water enters the bottom to force the hot water on top to flow out. It is normal and logically sound that that the water on the bottom will be the first to call for the heating element to turn on since the water is cold, so the bottom element always turns on first, not the top element since that water is still hot and most likely at temperture. According to Rheem the top element hardly ever turns on (only on first fill). Why do state that the top element always turns on first? It makes sense that as you use the hot water, the tank would naturally want to heat the bottom cold water immediately to keep up with a continuous flow of hot water. Rheem's explanation is exactly that. I would like to understand your explanation and how you know that the upper element heats the water first. You are not alone, but many others say just the opposite. I'm just curious. Thank you.

I have a brand new 30 gallon electric water heater that I've had for a month. I get hot water for about 5-8 minutes in the shower and then starts to get cool after that. I have the thermostats at 120 degrees fahrenheit. I checked the continuity on the elements and they are working fine. Can it be that the dip tube broke??? Or what else can it be? Thanks!

So my water heater doesn’t give me more than 5 minutes of hot water during shower. Why? Or how to figure out what is the problem
@jimbarron86882 жыл бұрын
Very likely your dip tube on the cold water inlet is broken. When this happens the incoming cold water isn't introduced at the bottom of the tank where the burner is but rather at the top of the tank. This very quickly reduces the temperature of the hot water at the top of the tank resulting in short draws of hot water.

I have a question. For two days in a row my water was starting to get to boiling hot, eventually to the point that no hot water was running. We replaced the heating element and it didn't work. We pressed that restore switch and it actually worked. Now the question is why afterwards does my water heater give off some kind of aroma? It's like something is burning, maybe a little similar to plastic. Would that be sulfur? And if so how would I solve this problem?

Great video, very clear and informative. We live in Greece and have a similar (but smaller) boiler than the one in the video. Our boiler is in an outside bathroom and is only used for showering. After we moved in to our house recently it worked perfectly, but suddenly we have lost the cold water from the shower tap. This makes showering very difficult as we can only try and heat the water by looking at the temperature gauge on the outside of the tank, and we usually ending up having luke warm showers as we otherwise would scald ourselves. Do you have any idea why this has happened? Not sure exactly how old the tank is but would guess at least 10 years old. We are getting a new bathroom in a few months time but need to sort out this problem in the meantime. Look forward to hearing from you, Cheers Rob.

Always flushed my 15-year-old electric hot water heater, Just recently started to sputter with air and black specs when I turn it on. I'm assuming that my anode or electric elements may have gone bad or maybe just integrating? The hot water still works, but it has a mechanical smell to it as well now and it comes out hotter than usual. Any comments would be much appreciated!

You must be around Hilo! I remember it well…scary! I have anode replacement rod ready to go, WD 40 prepped for months , sitting and penetrating. Guess I’ll do it one more time then use my impact air wrench to encourage it out. Is this asking for trouble? I have maintained it, drained periodically, replaced upper and lower elements and control boxes but wondering why nervous about this rod repair, my first. It’s time, 20 yrs of light use and not always on but still, am I asking for trouble? Enjoy your vids!
