Interesting and thank you... now the "hangers" do create a compression on top cables but it's resolved in "main cables" and with anchorage at the bridge deck node location. Cable stay bridges have compression in cables at the towers, where they pass through... So, the wire rope does have compression and I don't think I can find a stress that doesn't have both compression and tension. The cable bundle is never the less compression once you load it with hangers or cross the towers and it also has neutral axis of a gradation of stress in the cables at these load points (I believe a neutral axis exist wherever their is a stress). Even if you just pull a cable straight only, your clamp force to pull, creates compression at the ends. Further, the wrapped cables do not elongate the same and the center cable elongates at a different percentage than the outer spiraled cables. Again, I can not find where a stress is created that both compression and tension is not presented also...
