I sat in the sauna for 20 minutes and then squatted in a hot spa and then worked my way up the steps, this helped me enormously.

Beautiful video and message! As a software developer, it’s super common in my field to live an extremely sedentary lifestyle. Over the past year, I’ve redeveloped my squat and work on my computer in this position (as well as many others) throughout the day. It’s amazing how much movement I can get in throughout the day during my working hours! Small changes have made this possible, I set up an adjustable height desk on the floor, and I have a pull-up bar hanging from a door frame to hang on throughout the day. Many programmers complain of back pain and stiffness etc from sitting all day, and it does not have to be this way! Simple changes/habits go a long way

It goes to show that it may not be the job that creates the problem but how you go about your day-to-day life that can truly heal it. Great to hear of all the snacks you are doing.

Hey Antonio, I've just discovered your three back to basics videos. That's exactly, what I am working on right now - besides the 马步 practice. I am so grateful for your super helpful and informative videos. So much input in such a short time! I'll rewatch them many times ... while squating of course 🙂 Thank you very much for sharing your insights - very inspiring! 🙏

Squatting while I watch...... my dogs think I'm playing with them. I've always felt relaxed in this position. I guess this limb is not tall enough under my heals Beau-Bodio! You're mom squated to get pots out of the cabinets under the kitchen counter. Stan your cousin never crawled he went from squat to stand!😁💗 She has more flexibility (probably just physiologically) in her tendons and muscles in the back of the lower leg....for that incline challenge 🦵

Always nice to watch the insight in your video's Antonio! I am squating all my life and love it, its very easy for my I have grown into it, but my brother can't so here it is "us it or you will lose it " right😀 And about the last part How high is the elavated part under the toes..? I am trying this with an yoga block, but there is still more room... A new challenge😉

Ah yes, I only wish I had begun earlier. As for the elevation under the toes...I am unsure of how much. If I had to guess I would say about 5cm, not very much!

I never squatted as a child, although my dad squatted quite a lot. He is from India. Today, I try to squat everywhere, I live in the states, and when I'm outside with my dogs I squat and people look at me weird.

Thanks for the video and for the inspiration! I have a strange tightness in my left calf so that I"m not able to bring my hamstring muscle to my calf muscle without a massive tension buliding up in my calf (when i go in a squat). I think this tightness is also the reason why I have hip pain on that side where this tightness occurs. Do you think that training the squat position like you explained it in the video will lead to a relief in tightness in the calf and hips just due to the adaptation of the body?
@TheTaoWay
@TheTaoWay 3 жыл бұрын
Working on the squat may help to open up the calf but it may need extra work as well. If it were me I would work on both. Mostly squatting with a little mobility of the calf sprinkled in.

I broke my femur when I was five. So for some time I was in a caste from below the knee, up to my belly. I think this did me a disservice as far as the tightness and twisting discomfort I feel in my knee and hip when I sit cross-legged. My squat has always been fine, but I'm striving to improve it with Ido's method since the beginning of this month. My question is, how has your left knee done with sitting cross-legged? Do you feel any discomfort? If you have in the past, is there a way that you have remedied it? I'd like to sit comfortably in that position without that slightly nagging sensation.

Being viết I have no problem rest squatting because I've done it my whole life. It's funny that in the states we call this the fob squat or the asian squat. I'll admit I don't do it as often as I get older but since I injured my back about 7 years ago and it has healed in the last 5, my back has become very stiff so sitting in the squat for a period of time and coming back up I'm very stiff. Do I just need to do this more so over time it will go away?

1:07 is this really possible for everybody? I've been squatting for 3 years know and I've been working on my dorsiflexion but squatting this narrow and with feet forward still seems impossible let alone squatting with feet together.

Cannot give a for sure answer but I will say I have been squatting daily for the past 8 years or so and I am still finding improvements. Even if it can never be achieved, no harm in trying :)

Everybody will have their own body proportions which will affect where their centre of mass will be in any particular position. For example having longer shin bones compared to your thigh bones will push your centre of gravity behind your feet and you will need to learn your upper body forward more to compensate and bring it back above your feet. Spreading your legs wider changes the angle of your lower legs which reduces the ratio of tibia-femur which is why for a lot of people spreading their legs wider is the only way they can do it and still remain stable and each time they try to bring their legs closer they fall backwards. Likewise having a shorter trunk would limit how far forward you can easily push your centre of gravity by leaning forward without excessive hunching, this could limit how low you can squat down before feeling that sensation of tipping backwards because you can't keep your centre of gravity above your feet. You can test this by holding weights in your hands and holding them in front of you to pull your centre of balance forwards without needing to lean forward. You can always improve your form with practice but not every single person will be able to achieve every position other people can.

Do you actually rest while doing this? Maybe its bc of my low hip mobility but my quads and hip definitely feel the pressure 😅
@TheTaoWay
@TheTaoWay 3 жыл бұрын
This is something that needs to be developed. When you first start you can expect a lot of soreness and pain. Eventually, you should get to the point where when you are tired of standing you squat and not the other way around.

I've been relearning my squat for roughly 2 years now. I'm better than I was at the beginning but I'm not there yet : My body compensates by leaning way to forward and I need to stretch my hands also my upper spine rounds way too much. I know your spine can round in a resting squat but it should be the lower spine that rounds not my upper spine. So I generally appear hunched and my chest is not "open". So I'm still working on the squat. Because it's not comfortable yet and I need better posture in the position. .

I do agree that squatting is important. That said, I find Portal's challenge stupid: why should you squat for 30' a day, for 30 days? What does it mean, what does it prove? I am 62, and 2 years ago I was not able to squat at all. Then, little by little, I improved, and last week I tested my endurance: after 10' I decided it was enough. I guess I can say I am able to squat. So, what is the 30' challenge about?

This is explained in the video during the ‘why should we squat’ section but I’ll add some here. Mobility of the ankles,knees,shoulders and spine, increased low-gait freedom, decreased low back pain, and improved digestion just to name a few.
