The amount of detail that goes into these sessions is incredible. Another great idea.

Funny. I came up with something like this on my own back in 96..ish. I was given a project where the drums were already recorded and the snare was really dead. Back then It was adats. I didn't have a sampler or triggers but I had sound forge and these expander gates. So I Miked up the snares on another snare and ran a 100hz tone through a bass amp next to it. In sound forge I then removed the 100hz , eqed, the made a clean loop which I would run constantly through the expander during the mix. The expander had a sidechain which the original snare was plugged in the control the level. It worked really good and didn't sound like a sample , it worked on rolls and everything, I think because it was always starting at different points it was a bit more natural. Either way it's an alternative to a white noise by isolating the rattling of the snares by themselves. You could also get another track going tuned higher..etc.

That snare drum sound is incredible even before the white noise trick!

Wow! This takes me way back to my college days (we won't say how long ago ;-)). My instructor at the time showed us this trick using analog gear using a white noise/tone generator triggered by a side chain off the snare (if I remember correctly). Great stuff! Really adds to the snare character.

In my memorys Wallace did not add White Noise directly but goes direct out from the analog channel into a drum computer to send the signal to the reverb engines and the drum computers in that time had the white noise !

Used to do this on SSLs with the Pink Noise generator and a side chained gate. Also with the 50Hz sine oscillator for add oomph to a kick drum. Great tricks, personally I'd use a gate rather than edit in little samples, but creates the same effect.

Very nice. Maybe I’ll be able to try it one day. When I have a band that needs a huge snare like this.

Mmm I dunno. Problem is the snr sounds pretty good without all the spices. If you don't A-B, which of course no one will in the end result full mix.

I did something similar. Except I always used pink noise because my spectrum analyzer from my pa rig has a pink noise generator built in. Then, I sent the pink noise through a distortion pedal, then gated it. I had it as a sample in my rackmount sampler.(I wasn't recording on a PC, I was using Tascam DA-88's.)

Warrant's I Saw Red was on the radio the other day and I mentioned to my GF lol hear the 'splat" with the snare? That's white noise mixed in 😇 I'm certain that was a big 80's thing.

Hmm...I thought the snare sounded pretty damn good on it's own. It's definitely a cool trick -- The WN and thwack would work well in parts with heavy guitars in a mix but just with that drum groove and the other percussion, it bit much IMO. Thanks Bobby -- Merry Christmas.

Thank you for the video and offering your “thwack” . I’m curious about sounds from the kitchen, like a toaster flicking up the toast at the end of its cycle. Liked and subscribed.

i do a version of this with a duplicate of the snare or bottom snare mic. Eq, compress and distort it, gate it and blend to taste. I like using a duplicate track because it often contains more accurate velocity and feel compared to a sample.

Niiiice! I've heard/learned this before, but forgot all about it. A great refresher!! Merry Christmas brother!!🎄✝ I've been doing this with kicks for a long time, but forgot that it also works well on snares. (toms?) Also with some of the latest Superior Drummer 3 libraries they have 3-5 different snares/kicks layered on top of each other at varying levels. Amazing to think that 20 years ago, I thought you had to get it right with a single drum with a single mic (or two) on it, when really sky's the limit. AND the reason the BIG sessions got like 3 different sets of stereo room mics.

Thanks for the video. I was wondering though, with all the samplers that are around, why do you cut up and copy/paste the samples in the timeline instead of using something like Kontakt or Battery so you can just use the same midi that's triggering the original snare to trigger the 'thwak' or the white noise snippet?
@mr.k90510 сағат бұрын
If you eq white noise, is it still white noise?

@dougleydorite10 сағат бұрын
So this is an Andy Wallace technique, but do people still do this now days vs using slate trigger? To me, this is a better (NOT faster) workflow than using slate trigger to make the one-shots happen.
@BobbyHuff9 сағат бұрын
Any way that you prefer that is accurate is fine! The only reason I copy and pasted was because I only did a few bars for the video. My normal method is to create a midi track from the snare track which is very easy in Cubase. Thanks for watching Doug.
