I am British and lived in Germany from 1973 to 2011. When the German Government decided to ditch nuclear power, I asked my friends whether they supported the decision. All of them did, saying that nuclear power was too dangerous. When I pointed out that there were several foreign power stations on the German border, their answer was often "Well, somebody has to make a start". "OK, so you´d prefer to burn thousands of tons of lignite, destroy villages and emit lots of poisonous gases and CO2 ? ?" It makes no sense whatsoever.

Intended or not, she did not seem to have Germany's or her European Allies' interests in mind. If anything she seemed to be dancing to the Kremlin's tune and looking out for THEIR interests first. History will tell if she was just naïve, taken in or a foreign agent of influence (intentional?) ... her background as East German is certainly not reassuring when it came to facing Russian politics.

Merkel was opportunistic. We all were. It wasn't about policies, it was about economy. Cheap gas for the german industry, which enabled the great german welfare state. The red-green-yellow coalition of our now broken government actually made a fantastic job, considering covid and the war. But of course, now that the current economical hardships are not seen as the result of the 16 years of Merkel but that of the center-left, the far right smells blood.

Merkel accelerated shutting down nuclear. Merkel caused the eurozone crisis by profligate lending, Merkel degraded the German military, made Germany weakling and emboldened Putin. Merkel was the key policisn in creating the refugees crisis of open borders that has drained German budget. The blame clearly belongs on Merkel not Scholtz

she did notice it. there are several clear statements. yet she tried to keep relations for appeasement. and the appeasement failed. and thats when anyone thinks non-appeasement would have brought a better result. but actually, that is not thinking, its a reaction, leading to a wrong conclusion. ask yourself, did russia need money to invade other countries like chechnya or georgia? people forget that ukraine started to reconstruct their army after 2014. ask ukrainians if they would be prepared for a russian invasion before 2022. its always easy to neglect things that didnt happend but basicly so many people argue that a guy who invaded ukraine despite getting money, would not have invaded ukraine without getting money.

As a German I must say, that she didn't handle Putin well, even though all the signs were there, what kind of an animal that guy actually is and Merkel chose to ignore it (to be fair, the majority of western leaders did that too, so... there's also *that* ). We already saw that with the Russian support of the terrible Azad regime, or the invasion in Ossetia where there has been no forceful response to those transgressions, not even in the slightest - as a matter of fact, Merkel steered us even more into dependency of Russian oil and gas. Her administration was solely interested in furthering economical relationships. In that light, the Syrian refugee crisis which got worsened through the support of the Russians, might be considered one measure of an entire series of measures of a grander scheme by the Russians to stir things up on the European far right in order to influence public perception of western politics in general. Meaning: She walked right into Putin's trap. And what bothers me the most is, that there's no admission of guilt and no sign of reflection, that she completely botched her dealings with Putin - and that she mishandled the refugee crisis (which by the way would have been a complete disaster, if there hadn't been so many private citizens who offered their help handling that massive influx, what with the first wave poring in and winter was nearing, which could have been really catastrophic - but there was so much more that was handled poorly)...
