I was never interested in ants until I saw your channel in the recommendation section. The first video I saw was you fire ants planning an escape. I thought the title was funny so I watched it and now I am SOO interested! Thanks bro! P.S. Shouldn't ants be under a heating lamp? I don't know..
@AntsCanada
@AntsCanada 7 жыл бұрын
+Alex ._. Thank you! No, ants don't need a heating lamp unless you are keeping them in a cool, air conditioned room. The nest will also need a heating cable or mat. They are like reptiles that way.

And also, normally, when you are using lamps, it's to change their temperature. If you got the queen nearby, I don't think you need it unless you keep it in a room that's cold... well.. If you ordered it, and it is from another country, I don't suggest doing it cause it can resolve in escaping and either bringing an alien type of literally anything that could affect the environment, or die. You can find most of the informations online about their normal climat temperature, environment and feeding type. Since it's been a while, I wonder what happened... Edit: Always get informations about the animal that you are willing to have as a pet. Plus, it's AntsLove!

A few years ago, I got a few ants and a small container for them for Christmas. Unfortunately, it was before I watched these videos, so I didn't know how to care for them. Anyway, I got them in a little tube that was kept cold. The ants were huddled together and not moving, so we at first thought they were dead, but then they started to move around after warming up inside. I realized that they must do that in the cold, in order to hibernate. Hopefully, I'll get more one day and know how to properly care for them, thanks to watching your channel :)

We live on an old construction landfill where it use to be a swamp. You dig 2 feet then hit 6 inches of clay. After that you have tree branches, stumps, cement chunks, and tons of STILL LIVING CLAMS! I can’t imagine the ants liking that area but they die cause the underground tunnels to make sink holes because of releasing built up air. 50 years later and I can still dig where gutters drain and find living clams under the clay. I can pull up tree branches that won’t decay because of lack of air.

One correction - The subsurface temperature, at the depth where it remains constant year-round, is the mean average of the yearly temperature for that location. (Not necessarily 10C.) It's warmer in Brazil, colder in Norway. Warmer in California at sea level, colder in California in the mountains. I spent my youth exploring caves all over the world and the temperature of most areas of large caves is constant. Believe me, the Minnesota caves are much, much colder than the caves in Costa Rica! (And much less active biologically, too.)

Are Honey Bees actually related to ants? Apis Mellifera ? Also, here in the Northeastern United States, I see mounds that around 1 foot in diameter and approximately domed a little over one foot high, covered in grass. The water table is high and these mounds are filled with ants, particularly prominent in winter. Do you have a video showing ants making above ground water escapes like that? If you'd like to see it, I can make a video, but I think the ants would be exposed after breaking it open and would die in the cold. Thanks for the interesting video and ant facts :) Thumbs UP!

SageePrime sort of termites. Termites are insects but they aren't particularly close to ants. They are closest to cockroaches. Also bees,wasps and maybe ants most likely evolved eusociality separately as there are solitary bees and wasps.

They are sugar ants though so they are Mostly harmless. Although they make my cat's lips swollen when she tries to eat them. :( also I luv honeypot ants and the Golden Empire. I would never actually keep and ant Colony because it looks so hard in ur vids. Prob cuz ur taking care of like 4 ant colonies.

Hey AntsCanada, I like your channel, just found it by chance. When I was young I often caught and released soft shelled turtles for pets after keeping them a while. and I was given an ant farm. Unfortunately there were no ant care books in my library and I never saw a queen inside. They all perished and I don't know why. Maybe I can figure something out from watching a few of your videos.

It's a general rule of thumb, yes, but imagine things like caves, where the air will cool, so will the ground around it, or perhaps the colony is on a hill, so while from above you're rapidly getting deeper, but from the sides it's more gradual.

Got 2 Queen + 6-10 workers of Messor Aciculatus on the way and just wanted to know if it was true that they don't need to be hibernated? I planned on using a 5W heatmat and gradually introducing the queen up to a maximum of 25C and see how she responds with her brood development in the founding stages if she is accepting of the heat. I live in the UK so winters can get relatively cold here but not drastic - though I understand hibernation is critical for colony success if the species does require it however want to ensure the best for my queen since the site specifies they didn't need hibernation but I have found conflicting sources since they appear to have less documentation than most species.
