Since all the colonies are too weak, they would not bother risking taking over other colonies, thus showing no serious aggression. Thus, this is the best time to keep the existing setting so they have time to form ally instead of war.

@@AntsCanadaYou know what you have to do then. Since this is your passion i can understand how you feel about maybe making a decision that kills all colonies. What about taking one worker ant from each colony and put them together. Do you think their behavior would be different when there isn’t queen’s present?
@CubeBrik

@@AntsCanada I personally feel it's vital to observe this kind of intermingling. As an ant keeper to be I want to see what the results of this badly. I know mixing ant colony's is a bad idea but if Canada can find a good way todo it I know I would mix my own colonies when presented with the opportunity. I hate to be that guy but even if it doesn't go as planned I'd find that information extremely valuable, least of as a 'don't do it this way' sort of thing. No one can make AntsCanada do it. But as a fan and fellow ant lover I really really want to know. I really really want to see.

@namAehT
@namAehT 3 жыл бұрын
@@AntsCanada even a bad outcome results in new information. I think the fact that the scout regurgitated food and was then let go is a good sign that neither colony is in a position to be hostile. Personally I'd like to see a mixing of queens since it's not put of the realm of possibility that sister queens would choose to stay together. They would have the same colony pheromones from their mother nest after all.
@PeterSedesse
@PeterSedesse 2 жыл бұрын
Two hypothesis. First is that the opening of colony one was different than the rest. Second hypothesis is that colony one's scent already claimed the common area so the other colonies didn't want to enter another colonies area. A better experiment would have been to connect all the colonies at the same time rather than allowing the first colony to claim the central area beforehand.

Literally all I could think as well. Colony 1 definitely had the advantage by being first.
@revirdkcalb

I also think it would've been better to have them added at the same time. Colony #1 now had the confidence and first scent advantage. But I guess the guy was scared for it not to turn into a bloodbath.
@simonepozzoli
@simonepozzoli 2 жыл бұрын
To prove that the scent was the cause we could repeat the experiment letting the first colony to get out before others (as he did here) and see if the other colonies get out at some point (would be interesting also to understand when they get out and if they do it all at the same time). Then do another experiment synchronizing the opening and compare the results. I don't think the difference in holes matters, all colonies except the fist acted the same way and they had different openings. Do you know if he continued with the experiment?
@gefferg4516
@gefferg4516 2 жыл бұрын
Yep as soon as the holes were connected to the 2nd-7th colony the first thing they would notice is a foreign ant’s scent. If you release all of them at once I suspect no ant would reach the jelly. Some might take a few steps outside the hole right away but then smell 6 different scents and retreat
@scottkelly4131

I think your right. LIKE TERRITORIAL PISSING. THE SCENT FROM COLONY ONE WAS IN THE AIR FIRST / MAYBE THE OTHER ANTS JUST RECOILED NATURALY.

I think the problem was colony 1 was introduced ahead - thus giving their scent to the whole 'arena' which the other colonies are 'respecting' . In other words, the other colonies are probably detecting 'outside' as already the territory of colony 1. I am fascinated how this one has played out after these few days. If there haves been no changes, may I suggest removing colony 1 (leave others as is - thus rest having 'equal' starting point)?

You let colony 1 have all the advantage of putting their scent everywhere already which is why none of the others came out. Colony 1 had a very defined opening but the other colonies had their entrances partially covered by the cotton, which might had influenced them into staying inside. Another factor is that when #1 was opened, there were no traces of pheromones in the environment. By the time the other colonies were opened, #1 had already laid several pheromone paths and the other ants did smell that when exploring the possibility of venturing out, so they stayed inside as a natural safety. Really interesting insight into the lives of ants, thanks for sharing!

Yes and no The smell, yes, could have scared them, but in nature they would probably feel a lit of different colonies scents too About the entrance, it may have bored them a little, but you can see colony #1 dragging pieces of cotton with their feet when they enter the chamber so they don't really seem to care, and also ants are used to having to open new passages, and they could feel with they antennae that there was an opening there, they could feel the air and the smell of food from outside. We'll never know for sure why they didn't come out at first lol

Im pretty sure that the first scout filled the arena with its scent. Thats usually a good idea if you want to bring foreign animals together - use neutral space for meeting the first time. Since ants are pretty much always marking their territory it would have been a good idea to let them all in the arena at the same time.

That little scuffle seems like a good sign to me. Regardless, you can’t be too careful. I’d disconnect all but two colonies and just give them more time to intermingle. @ everyone scrolling through the comments on this: please LIKE so we can boost it to the top and make sure AC reads it. I agree that it looks like they may be able to integrate, but, like you said, we don't want to risk everything. The responsible move, I think, would be to separate them... But also, we don't want to make the other colonies look weak, either. Maybe pairing them up in different enclosures would help. That way, they aren't overwhelmed with the scents of six other colonies all at once. Here's how I would divide it: 1 🤝 3 2 🤝 4 🤝 5 6 🤝 8 5 is included in a set of three because introducing her later, when there are tons of other ants that might act aggressive towards her, would be more dangerous (at least, I would assume, based on my limited knowledge of ant behavior), so it's best to try and get her to integrate with a smaller group that can still provide for her. If all goes well, the three groups can meet up once they have worked their own situations out, and ideally, that would put each colony under less stress.

@patrikkarlsson9463
@patrikkarlsson9463 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and I think that opening all of them at once would have made for a better experiment, instead of letting one colony explore the space first. It seemed to me that when the other colonies explored the opening, they detected the scent of the first colony, and therefor avoided venturing out. I wonder if there is a way to entice them to go out despite that. Perhaps giving them a smaller chamber to explore that then connects into the central hub?

Even if they were released at once, there's no guarantee that the ants would emerge simultaneously. Whichever colony emerges first would mark the area as their territory with their pheromones. That would basically mean game over for the other ants even trying to leave I think.

I purchased a house in Nova Scotia. I had unwanted, nonpaying "guests" living in my walls. When we stripped the inside walls down to the studs we found many Carpenter Ant Colonies in the structure. The original colony got big enough they separated and formed new colonies though out my house. There had been previous water damage unknown to me at the time of purchase so the Carpenter Ants had plenty to burrow through. We managed to remove the colonies throughout the home and repaired all the damaged wood. The point to my story is that although they all lived in the walls of one home, they built their colonies away from the original colony. I suspect they would run into each other once in a while but they were definitely separate colonies.

I was already aware of ants being intelligent just like most life out there but man was it so cool watching how these ants interacted with the world around them. I started to get attached to those guys! I was relieved that scout number 6 from the first colony survived its encounter with colony number 3. The way they pass information to one another and interact with their environment is simply amazing. This was exciting. Thank you for your efforts on raising these little guys and for setting up a clever experiment. It’s truly a blessing being able to observe how these ants grow and learn. I’m not religious but is this how God feels observing us and every other species?! So exciting!

they are not the strongest, it's only because their "opening" is totally clear and the uploader didn't clear all of the strands away from the other colonies, if you look closely the ants use their feelers not their eyes and even 1 strand in the way and they think the entrance is totally blocked.

I have a theory as to why the other colonies are so shy. You introduced the first colony way before the others and the first had time to send out scouts too which likely filled the space with foreign smells and that is probably why the other colonies are being so very cautious.

"That's one small step for ant, one giant leap for antkind" - the first Colony 1 scout, probably On a serious note, the other colonies probably don't want to come out because they detect Colony 1's scent/pheromones and dominance and thus they're scared. Colony 1 clearly has the high ground in this and if you want to still keep them together (though I honestly don't think you should because of the risk they can still be monogynous), I suggest removing Colony 1 and keeping them separate alongside Colony 7
