Apple’s USP has always been that it is ultra-protective of its users’
privacy. But that's all a façade. The new surveillance system that Apple has sought to launch with iOS15 is a scare. With iOS 14.5, you can choose to restrict targeted advertising. Apps that run targeted ads like Facebook and Twitter, took a huge hit. 59% of advertisers in the US and UK shifted from iOS to android- resulting in a net loss of $600 billion of Facebook alone, in just one year.

This is what i am screaming for years about targeted ads and privacy. Tracking a user for advertising is not always a bad thing. And this lack of understanding leads to these types of situation where a user is played and they don't even realise it.

You may be right.. targeted ads are not at all bad things.. but this goes sideways when companies like meta intentionally sell peoples data to other companies The Cambridge analytica scandal is one of them.Using peoples data to manipulate political decision and going as far as making users vote for one contentor rather than other (in case of an election by serving ads or content that can brain wash people to a certain extent) thats where the problem lies

It can go wrong. It depends on what all info they are collecting and how they are categorising people. The latter part is obviously secret and you can rely that will never be public information. So the only way you can do this is via stopping the information collection route. As a disclaimer, I have never owned an Apple. And I probably will never do because of the closed eco system. I also don't use Facebook (once in a month or something) or Insta (never).

I have not denied anywhere in those 4 and a half lines of comment that it is not ever miss used. The common reason why developers track a user is to show targeted ads. Showing targeted ads is not a bad thing, infact its good for both a user and the company. Miss using that data to manipulate people is something must not be done and neither i have denied that it. Companies like apple are using this tracking phobia of people to do exactly what this video was about. I myself am a web developer and if in future i track my users it will be to show them ads they may have interest in and to personlise their usage not to do something unethical and immoral.

Hence instead of talking like other phone companies at the launch event Steve Jobs had a different speech, other companies said our phone has AMOLED display and these are the benefits of AMOLED display, Steve Jobs said our screen is completely magical if you touch it you will feel like lickiing it even though iphone had lcd screen back then that was very bad compared to AMOLED but people don't care about the features and statistics when they get emotionally attached to the product.

Just calrifying a few things 1. You can turn off Personalised Ads in Apple. (Currently Apple can only run personalised ads in 3 apps with it being tested on Maps. But once you turn Personalised ads off, You're gong to see random ads in these three apps) 2. Micro transactions have 30% tax if your income from app store exceeds $ 1 Million. Else its 15% (yes this is a way for Apple to divide and conquer) 3. You can also choose exactly what data can be sent to Apple (you can turn all of it off without much performance issues)

Dude I completely agree with you, but : 1. It's not forcing companies to stop tracking, it's giving people a choice and we can choose whether we wanna be tracked or not. 2. Even google used to charge around 30% but now it's 15% and it's a cost for hosting your apps in their stores.

Very good video! However, I politely disagree. You see, Apple never said tracking was bad, in fact, the iPhone has it’s own unique ID that allows third party tracking across all apps and web browsing, and what Apple did was to give users the choice whether they wanted to be tracked across all their activity on the web or not. If you think tracking and targeted ads are good then you can just allow tracking. This feature isn’t saying targeted ads are bad, but rather truly protecting users privacy. Also, if I’m not mistaken, Tim Cook’s Tweet had place holders in the app tracking transparency alert. When talking about the reports of Apple expanding its ad business I’m not really worried because they will let you opt out of personalised ads (just like they do now) and there’s a big difference between first party tracking and third party cross site tracking. And even if my Apple ID was linked to some advertisement profile I still trust more Apple to not be hacked and my information leaked than FaceBook/Meta for example, and I would like to believe that Apple would design some anonymous smart way of serving ads without having access to my data (you know, the whole “on device” buzzword). And let’s not forget that this is merely a report. Finally, I think the CSAM detection system is actually a good thing (and you’re wrong, it hasn’t been deployed and was indefinitely delayed due to people’s concerns) and it’s also an opt in feature, it is restricted to iCloud photos, so if you don’t want your photos “scanned”, just don’t use iCloud photos and store them on a USB stick the old fashion way. And I think it is important to recognise how the system actually works since everyone seems to believe it’s simply “scanning” everyone’s photos (just like Google or Microsoft already do by the way). The photos are analysed by the machine learning algorithm inside your phone that will be part of iOS, so even before your photos are in the cloud they’re privately analysed; and if the algorithm finds a match, it will be flagged but nothing happens. It is when there’s a specific number of flags that those photos are reviewed by a person and if that person confirms there’s CSAM, then they call the cops on you, not before and not on the first flag. And furthermore, this system is exclusive for CSAM detection, it cannot be altered, and if it was people would notice and call Apple out, because you can read the iOS code, and again, it is exclusive to iCloud. But there’s also the iMessages image detection, which is working right now, however; that doesn’t involve authority, it’s also an opt in function and it’s exclusive for minors. Furthermore, it also redirects for help on cases of extortion. These measures are a good thing for a good reason, that’s undeniable. And I understand and agree that this things are pretty serious and should be very monitored and looked at. We cannot let Apple unchecked. But for now, I trust them and I agree with what they’re doing, but most importantly, with how they’re doing it; it’s definitely better that how other people are doing it. And the App Store problems need sorting out and further refinement, and Apple can definitely do better, but I really think people make too much of a deal out of it, or at least they make a mess out of everything with a fair point, but fail to demonstrate it. I hope I might have cleared some things out, and don’t get me wrong, if Apple messes up I will call them out, but it’s important on what and how you call them out, and I honestly think this video is a bad take on everything that is going on (even though it’s quality is undeniable!)
