Hey guys. Since this is one of my first videos about Sumeru I made some errors during my research. I would like to address them here 👇 Quick error at 6:36 I said Aaru Mixed Rice was based on maqluba. It seems to actually have more inspiration from Egyptian Koshary instead. Thank you my Egyptian viewers for pointing it out

Even in version 1.0, Genshin was heavily influenced by a religion that is still practiced in China that came from Iran. It is a religion called Manichaeism and you should check it out. Manichaeism came from Iran, but it no longer exists in Iran. It is a belief that the God of the Hebrew Old Testament was evil and false god and kept people trapped in the firmament. Name was Yaldabaoth. That is the main demon of Manichaeism. Then there are other demons: Barbatos, Morax, Beelzebal, Buer, etc. This demonology of Manichaeism placing the false god as chief demon is unique to Manichaeism. Manichaeism was found in the region of Iraq where the ancient civilization called Sumer was in. The fact that the Irminsul and wisdom was in Sumer is very telling.
@Nikkikkikkiz
@Nikkikkikkiz Жыл бұрын
The entire Genshin lore is the same as a retelling of the Garden of Eden from an Manichaeist view. There is the main demon, the Demiurge or Yahweh, Old Testament god, the malevolent false god that creates worlds and floods earth for 40 days. The archons are also demons but they rebel against the main demon, the false god because they suffered from the archon war. They are the serpents that guide Adam to eat an apple. The traveler is Adam. The traveler will eventually reach Snezhnaya where all the Gnosis will be combined together to form the "apple". In Manichaeism, the apple is Buddha, Zoroaster, Jesus, Mani.

Some have actually complained that Sumeru is a bit too much of a hodgepodge of different cultures, while the first three nations (and supposedly Snezhnaya) are a lot more specific. Personally I think it makes it more beautiful but I can get why mixing Arabs, Turks, Persians and Southern Asians might rub some people the wrong way…
@ExplorersCompass82
@ExplorersCompass82 2 жыл бұрын
I do see some downsides in mixing the cultures in a way that leads certain people to think all of them are the same but in a way, I do like seeing multiple cultures in one area because cultural integration is always better than cultural segregation in my eyes. that is why I make these videos. Is so that people could enjoy the cultural diversity of mixed nations like Sumeru, but still know that each group is unique and different from the other
@CircusFoxxo
@CircusFoxxo Жыл бұрын
With King Deseret being clearly based on Cyrus the Great of the Achaemenid Empire the complaints have a lot less grounding. At the height of the Persian Empire under his dynasty, it spanned from the Balkans to Egypt north/south and from the Levant to Pakistan east-west. The region draws from Indian and Persian-Arab cultures because it's based on a region/nation that encompassed all those cultures. The only real valid criticism is wondering where the Semites are/fit into the setting (Assyrians, Canaanites, Hebrews)

i'd like to point out that "dar al shifa" means "house of healing". also tighnari -like alhaitham- is an actual arabian scientist (الطغنري) who was a doctor as well as a Botanist (which matches with his in game character) also layla's scroll title in her idle animations is a VERY famous book in arabic philosophy called (الحركات السماوية وجوامع النجوم) which translates to (the heavenly movements and the sum of the stars). additionally alot of the npc names are arabic names. the sumeru music also uses alot of famous arabic musical instruments (oud, tabla, etc..) oh also aru mixed rice is an egyptian dish called (shokari) very tiny spoilers for alhaitham gameplay proceed at your own risk. as you said alhaitham is inspired by the real alhaitham who (also as you said) is the optics father and in alhaitham gameplay he has a mirror mechanics which reflects that.

I feel like Genshin's underlying lore is totally based off of Manichaeism, a religion practiced only in China that came from Iran. Literally all the gods in the game are demons from Manichaeism. God from Hebrew Old Testament, Yahweh, is the Demiurge in Manichaeism. Yahweh is the main demon. The head of Celestia.

I feel like the Eremites may in part have been shaped by the Elamites, who were an ancient civilization centered in the far west and southwest of modern-day Iran, stretching from the lowlands of what is now Khuzestan and Ilam Province as well as a small part of southern Iraq. A further conection is the fact that Elam was also located north of the Strait of Hormuz and the Kingdom of Ormus.

And the name Nahida comes from Anahita Anahita /ɑːnəˈhiːtə/ is the Old Persian form of the name of an Iranian goddess and appears in complete and earlier form as Aredvi Sura Anahita (Arədvī Sūrā Anāhitā), the Avestan name of an Indo-Iranian cosmological figure venerated as the divinity of "the Waters" (Aban) and hence associated with fertility, healing and wisdom. There is also a temple named Anahita in Iran. Aredvi Sura Anahita is Ardwisur Anahid (اردویسور آناهید) or Nahid (ناهید) in Middle and Modern Persian, and Anahit in Armenian.[1] An iconic shrine cult of Aredvi Sura Anahita was, together with other shrine cults, "introduced apparently in the 4th century BCE and lasted until it was suppressed in the wake of an iconoclastic movement under the Sassanids."[2] The symbol of goddess Anahita is the Lotus flower. Lotus Festival (Persian: Jashn-e Nilupar) is an Iranian festival that is held on the end of the first week of July. Holding this festival at this time was probably based on the blooming of lotus flowers at the beginning of summer.

Sumeru is based on the Achaemenid Empire, ancient Persia. Ptolemic Egyptians were pretty fair, and the major inspirations for the region are more Iran-Iraq-Pakistan than regions/people who are more dark-skinned. Based on the cultural inspiration it would actually be an error if they were all super dark since the peoples it draws from are Persian-Arab and not equatorial. Look at some pictures of Iraqis and Iranians for me real quick.

Some of my family members are light, some are dark, and some are brown. as an amazigh, it'd be important to let you know that Tighnari is fully based on Amazigh culture!! He is a fennec fox which is an animal known for living in amazigh countries (Algeria's national animal too) He is wearing a Berber belt, a cultural amazigh clothing. Tighnari means Fox in Tamazight! He has the color palette of the Maghrebs flags!

I will keep this in mind when making the video about Sumeru’s North African culture! I noticed some similarities with Tunisia since Aaru village looks like their cave village, as well as ancient Egyptian mythology. I never new too much about the Algerian influence, so I’ll include it in the next video!

i love how sumeru is heavily based on the period in real world history when the Islamic world experienced its revolution in literature, math, and sciences. Many of the revolutionary discoveries made during this time are still very impactful today, and it sparked the desire for higher learning throughout the whole world. Seems very fitting how the land of wisdom is based on this real-world event and draws inspiration from the cultures that were involved in it.

Being an Iraqi Kurd, they told me that half of the characters are from Saudi Arabia and one is an Iraqi Arab, and the developers chose a character based on the culture of the Arabs and the Arabian Peninsula, and this made me sad because Iraq is not part of the Arabian Peninsula, and some Persian parts were exposed. Since I saw Nilo, the first thing that came to my mind was the culture of the entire Persian country. Nahida, even Sino was resembling the Pharaohs, and I even touched on some Turkish cultures! In the end, there are all nationalities, except for Saudis and Kurds. I hope to find a Kurdish character one day.
