I actually think that the pair of hairpins is much more meaningful option to be Raiden sisters then the shoes, considering just how much symbolism they have being basically the signature feature of them both. Also couldn't Shogunator & her prototype also be yokais of their respective puppets? That just would have so much sense in this case.

Oooh I like the hairpin theory. Shogey and Moosh can definitely be tsukumogami, but they’re more likely a result of whatever lost tech goes into puppet making in the first place. also shoes is just really funny

@@TheShadeChamber What if the pins were what contained their souls first, but after Makoto officially ascended to the position of a god, and Ei hid, they could have gained human forms, to which the pins were connected. These forms could be fully humanlike, with flesh and blood bodies and things like that. This could be explained with the fact that the pin that looks more for official meetings is Makoto's, and the one that looks more for battle is Ei's. The thing with only Makoto ascending to godhood before the Archon War, I heard during cutscenes, and after comprising it all together, it said something like this: Makoto had been the leader of Inazuma for a long time before the archon war, because she was a god. Ei, who was not a god at the time had been hiding in Makoto's shadow, and replacing her, when it was time for battle. Ei had slain the Thunderbird, and the god ruling Sangonomiya Island during that time, the World Serpent Orobashi, to ensure the survival of Inazuma. After this, the Heavenly Principles, or the gods of Celestia (don't know which one at the time), had demanded the gods to fight, in order to pick out the strongest ones. That was the Archon war. During this fight, Morax, the God of Contracts, Diligence, and Prosperity had sealed, or slain many gods, as has Murata, and the Tsaritsa (don't know her name). Rukkhadevatta, or rather Nahida/Kusanali was not in any danger, as she was considered one of the strongest gods (at that time) as she is, and was the God of Wisdom, and Knowledge. Venti/Barbatos was not recorded to have done anything to kill other gods, but during that time Decarabian, the God of Storms, the Lord of the Tower, and one of the Kings of Ice and Frost, had disappeared, while Andrius, the second King of Ice and Frost, and the second god ruling over the territory now known as Mondstadt. He was stronger than Decarabian, and so Decarabian feared him. Then Decarabian was killed, presumably by Barbatos, who then overpowered Andrius. We will find out more later on, but lets return to Inazuma, and it's twin gods. After the Archon War, the seven gods, who were neither killed, nor sealed away, had been chosen as the Archons of seven elements, and were given rule over seven regions. Around 1500 hundred years passes after the Archon War with no major problems, and the Calamity strikes. That was the Apocalypse, triggered by the people of Khaen'riah, who were trying to (presumably) massively control the power that Dainsleif has. This turns many of them into monsters, after killing them with this power gone rogue. Six of the seven Archons are called to Khaen'riah, in order to destroy it, and stop the Calamity. At that time, Rukkhadevatta, I mean, Kusanali was fighting off the second wave of "illness" that had begun spreading across Irminsul. During the Calamity, or rather at the end of it, Makoto dies, and leaves Ei alone. After this, Ei ascends into divinity, and finds out the answer to creating puppets. It was like this, however this was rather how I remember it, and may not be exactly how it happened. If you have accurate information, please comment, and I will edit this quick recap of the story, of how Ei became a god.

@@icxun1035 Well, Barbatos became a god after (supposedly) he killed Decarabian. Then Andrius gave up his position as a god, and became one of the Four Winds of Mondstadt. That's the shortest version of this I can muster.

Personally I think the twin sisters have mentioned already what kind of yokai they were… they mentioned about lightning flashes and its shadow. Meaning, Makoto is the Flashing light of lightning and Ei is the shadow cast upon by that light. Simply put they are the Youkai of Lightning… Inazuma has long since been the land of lightning before the seven and before the sisters. And the people of inazuma worshiped this lightning. The worship of the lightning gave birth to the creation of of the twin sisters… like as mentioned. Everything in Shinto beliefs have a soul. Even the wind and the heavens even lightning and its shadow. The reverence and worship of the people of this lightning allowed the spirits of the lightning to take on human form. And since they were worshiped they were not just any yokai. They were kami right off the bat. Hence when they arrived or personified in narukami they were instantly worshipped and the people followed them as the kami that they are. This is further evidenced by Venti. Yes Venti… venti was just a wisp in the wind. It did not even have a form like that of the elf in the story… but it was sentient as is with shinto belief even wind has souls. This spirit helped the gunhildr clan and was worshiped by that family. That worship gave it its fairy form and more power. It culminated when he joined the bard to fihht decarabian and was worshiped by old mondstadters as their protector allowing him to be as powerful as andrius and decarabian… so it won’t be too far off for the spirit of lightning and shadow to be powerful enough to and have a human form just like the spirit of the wind that was venti.

Venti is a wind wisp, yes, but also part of Ishtaroth, The Thousand Winds/God of Moments/Shade of Phanes. So he's more than a sentient gust of wind.

Yes. Venti, as god of a region based on Holy Roman Empire Germany, is less a god in his own right and more an angelic herald to a Big G God (in this case Istaroth). there is no confirmation in canon yet whether or not Ishtaroth wears shoes

I think it's the sheer weirdness and dumb rules of fae and youkai. like, who is this for? other cultures' mythical creatures: "don't go in the woods. don't go in deep water. don't go with that stranger" fae and youkai: "don't harvest barley under a full moon without turning your socks inside out and chanting the Buddha's name, or else the barley spirits will make your crops explode". ...thanks?

@@TheShadeChamber Yokai is also similar to "Engkanto" mythical creatures from the Philippines, they also have the weird specific rules... Like you shouldn't have a door Infront of another door because it will let those "things"(Engkanto) enter etc. When lost in the woods wear your shirt inside out, to ward off the tikbalang(a creature with the head of a horse and a body of a man) or ask permission to explore the woods. Avoid specific trees and if you see either smoke or tobacco ash coming from a tree just ignore and keep walking to not let it know you noticed it(Kapre - A Giant that sits a top specific trees and smokes). There's also the ladies, spirits of a woman, depending on the cloth they're wearing there's certain rules, white lady, they're probably either scaring you or asking for help, just ignore them. black lady, run as fast as you can cause it's a vengeful spirit. red lady, it's either your dead or she wants you to do her revenge. (I think multiple countries has multiple version of this tho) as for God like Engkanto's there's the Mikonawa the Sun Eater and Bakunawa the Moon Eater... both are driven away by loud sounds(Mikonawa is a bird like dragon while Bakunawa is a serpent like dragon, both appear during eclipses)

I did. Plus, some European spirits and stories are remarkably similar to Asian ones. For instance, think of what foxes represent in Germanic lore: smart, mischievous... Fae are similar to many powerful, morally grey Yokai. My mother and apparently their ancestors had the belief that some actions can grant spirits power over you, for instance: acknowledging them following them (really bad) accepting gifts or advice (you'd get indebted to them) Eating or drinking anything they may offer (could result in possession or having an attached spirit) making a pact (duh!) Plus, they feared black cats and ravens (linked to spirits) A lot of ressembles Shintoism, at least to my understanding.

They could be the hair pieces that they always wore. They are one of a pair as ei wears them together now. It's the first thing I've always noticed about them. However they are more closely connected to the sword. But there is always a scabbard with the sword, I think one of them mentioned the scabbard but I can't remember when or what it was about

Your comment made me think that the other hairpiece should have been destroyed if it was makoto but that reminded me that a legendary _sword_ was destroyed during the cataclysm I think it was the original misplitter. I also was thinking about Kazuhas story quest and his clans legendary techniques for making sentients swords (that scara destroyed) and remembered that the sword schools are even called the Raiden gokuden (the five traditions/arts of Raiden[God spirit/Heavenly soul]).

I actually think they are "raijins" , a raijin is a Japanese "god of thunder" and it's signature symbol is the "ring" behind their back! And Ei's/the shogun's elemental skill summons exactly such a Ring ! So the connection makes perfect sense !

I had always thought of them as weapons I always thought raiden Ei was the sword and she made the puppet. I never really thought about them being twins before but if one was a sword and the other a scabbard it would be an interesting quirk that Ei decieded to make a puppet to replace her sister and put herself inside it like a scabbard.

Oh, that makes perfect sense. If Ei is a sword, that's why she's a fighter, meanwhile Makoto being a scabbard defines her as a more peaceful one. Sword without a scabbard has nowhere to stay, the exact reason why Ei was so lost after Makoto's death. But then many questions about Musou Isshin arise. Was it Raiden Sister's original form? Also I'm still bothered by Ei's words that she is a shade of lightning in a form of Makoto. Perhaps that's just the same methaphor as Nahida used (moon and long-gone sun), but I feel it's some possible connection to their origin

If you ask me, they are two swords. If I remember correctly, they said in a past lore event, that when swords are made, there are always two versions: one for use, the other just a mere shadow, a kind of blueprint. They are both made from the same steel and are the same blade, but only one is truly cut out for war. Ei would be the one cut out war, while makoto would be the more ceremonial sword. Also would make sense why she can summon just a sword out of nowhere. If we look at japanese history, then they could be the youkai of a daisho, a pair of swords both used in battle, one sword being big, the other small.

The LV shoes is funny to think of as the raiden origins. lol I always thought Ei was modeled after Amaterasu who shut herself in a cave leaving the world in chaos, because that is exactly what Ei did in Genshin. That would leave Makoto as Tsukuyomi. They are a pair. Sun and Moon. Left eye, right eye. So in short, the both of them are Kami.

I always tought of them as elemental beings ? Ei says in one of her voicelines that she is one of the most terifying and powerfull incarnation of lightning. And we know that some elemental beings can gain sentience, like, of the top of my head, the ocenaid in liyue. Also im pretty sure gods like the thunderbird and osail are also just elemental beings that managed to gain enough power (possibly from human worship since as we can see from Venti's backstory people are willing to worship smaller helpers too.). Also if i remember correctly when Makoto became the electro archon Ei sacrificed herself in some form and Makoto made her a new vessel to inhabit. That seems like something powerfull gods can do since Zhongli just casually dropped a dragon out of the sky. So uh yeah.

i'm not sure someone has point this out, but here i go: in the sumeru wind glider's description there's this line: "The story was about the wind that had taken on a human form, a talking stone, and... Uh, a wooden thing made of Electro. " i believe it may refer to the archons, which would mean that ei/makoto could be a wood related youkai? though i like to think they are chancla youkai (sorry for my bad english)

the item Narukami's Wisdom which refers to the earliest period of worship of the Raiden twins describes how the lightning was worshipped by shaping wood into the shape of magatama, and this became the electro mitsudomoe: so it's possible that they were magatama that became lightning spirits as they were worshipped as idols of the lightning? Here's the description: "In the past, the ancients would climb the peak now known as Mt. Yougou and bend wood that had been charred by lightning into a hook to offer as an effigy unto the thundering force that lit up the skies and shook the earth. This shape would eventually become the "Electro Mitsudomoe" symbol, symbolizing the favor, wisdom, and might of Electro, and also the people who represent these values."

In Interlude Act 3 Nahida's fairytale described Scara as a kitten carved from the wood of a white tree. Combined with the glider description, it implies that Raiden puppets are made from Irminsul wood.

I feel they're more likely the incarnations of a concept. Ping pong lady was weak and dieing because no one worshiped or took care of the ping pong paddles. Where as Raiden and Makoto are clearly very strong. If there was some object that everyone in inazuma worshipped, we would probably know about it. They might represent the very concept of leadership as one takes the dictorial path and the other takes the peaceful path.

hmm i think that rather than the shoes, i believe it was either in their hairpins or more likely their weapons, makoto in musou isshin and ei in engulfing lightning, this would also explain why in ei’s second story quest makoto’s consciousness emerged from her sword

I'm sticking with the manifestation of lightning and thunder. Just like Venti was a wisp in wind or Nahida was a branch from irmansul I think it's important to start from somewhere that makes them the core of their element or concept. Lightning is an especially amazing thing and can be worshipped. Maybe they are single lightning strike that managed to stay, that would fit their idea of eternity as lightning and thunder disappear in an instant. It also fits in your yin yang thing where lightning and thunder one is electricity and one is a sound and she does say that quite a bit. I don't remember other archons saying "I'm the wind", "I'm terrifying rock" or "I'm the plants here"

I've been fascinated with these Youkai thingy! Glad to have watched your video and a great takeaway which were the kinds of Youkai and finally being able to categorize Ei and Makoto. Though due to her voiceline about the thunder, I believe they're more like a pair of Youkai related to lightning. Like what Ei said: "You are in the presence of the most supreme and terrifying incarnation of lightning in the whole of Teyvat."

the most i've been able to guess at with Baal's origins is in the Narukami series of weapon materials, whose narrative descriptions seem to progress in time as we increase in rarity, through the archon war, cataclysm and up to the present - so the earliest description of Raiden comes from the most common form of these magatama materials: Narukami's Wisdom. "In the past, the ancients would climb the peak now known as Mt. Yougou and bend wood that had been charred by lightning into a hook to offer as an effigy unto the thundering force that lit up the skies and shook the earth. This shape would eventually become the "Electro Mitsudomoe" symbol, symbolizing the favor, wisdom, and might of Electro, and also the people who represent these values." So, either the Raiden twins were pure elemental spirits, or they were wooden magatama that gained sentience through worship.

Less we forget the Sacred Sakura tree! It only bloomed when Makoto fell, but everyone remembers it being older than Inazuma itself. It is possible that Ei’s sword was made from the same wood of Makoto’s tree and in turn, the twins’ sacred objects are the wood of the Sacred Sakura itself. I also saw another theory of them literally being lightning and shadow and that’s so dope too

It was a good take on the theory of youkai. However, as someone who also loves lore and myth, I'd have to say the Raiden sisters are kami. It has been mentioned several times in game that Raiden is the "narukami" Narukami is Raijin/Raiden - God of thunder from the folklore and he is often accompanied by the wind God - Fujin/Futen. While the Raiden twins themselves are together classified as Narukami, MHY still incorporated the folklore through the puppets Ei made. The shogun and wanderer using electro and anemo, representing Raijin and Fujin. Even their design of having the chakra ring behind them was clearly inspired by these two Gods.

Yes, it is a title but it is one that exists in the folklore and literally translates to "roaring God" referencing Raijin. Even the design of the Archon statue depicts closely to the actual Raijin. IDK who is Gucci, unless you mean Guuji for Yae Miko? Guji is just a term for the chief priest in the shinto shrine.

IIRC, the name "Narukami" is another name of the twins, referring to them as "Thunder God", the usage of the singular form of the word revealed through the Archon Quests. 7:43 - From what I can recall from the Inazuma Archon Quests, it was Yae Miko who "taught" Ei about "transferring consciousness into objects". Following this line, we can't really "associate" Ei with the "object youkai" as they do not inherently knew how to perform consciousness transfer outright (unlike, say, Paimon and her ability to "vanish"). They are highly likely to be "elemental youkai" (from the quick trip on Wikipedia, youkai could also be "forces of nature"), another type of youkai/kami not included in the list of youkai in this video. That’s a really good question! Humans have their own rules. Like I said in the video, they can be cursed into youkai, or their spirit can become some kind of ghost or revenant. I don’t really get into them in this video, but there are many types of weird Japanese ghosties that overlap with youkai. like Gashadokuro: a giant skeleton made of several smaller skeletons who goes around eating everyone. But these overlap with the “always been” youkai. Unlike many other cultures’ fairy tales, humans in Japanese legends don’t really get turned into animals or artifacts, much less the youkai versions. On the contrary, most shapeshifting in youkai stories is the youkai taking a human disguise. That’s interesting actually, I’ve never thought about that before!
