How Are Cellphone Thieves Obtaining Your Passcode?

Reyhan Ayas says she was standing outside a bar when a thief snatched her iPhone. She says she lost access to all her photos because the thief locked her out of her Apple accounts. Although the pictures are in Apple's iCloud, she says for security and privacy reasons Apple will not restore her access. Apple says they "sympathize" with customers who've had this experience and take the incidents seriously. They also say they work hard to protect users' accounts and are always investigating additional protections against new threats. For privacy reasons, Apple also says they do not accept passports or driver's licenses to confirm ownership of an account.

Apple really needs to stop saying that they can’t do anything about things like this. They need to step up protections for the customers’ sake. And allow them to access their accounts again and make the changes necessary to ensure that the thieves can’t steal any more than what they have already.

if you want apple to protect their customers then you're asking them to reduce their security features such as end to end encryption. They should focus on making your phone's passcode not have access to everything. I recommend everyone to disable apple keychain for starters as thats the main problem with this

Keep your phone in your pocket. Do not lay it down someplace and keep your phone with you! Change passwords and codes often! When you notice it was stolen, take action to ensure your bank is aware and change your passcodes to the bank. I know it sucks, but be vigilant and outsmart the thieves. Also, don't get so inebriated that you can't function.

Make sure to put a pin on your SIM card. So if your phone does get stolen and he puts the sim into another phone it will ask for a pin to unlock the SIM. This will prevent the thief from getting two-step verification text messages and will prevent them from easily gaining access to your email, bank accounts and any other account that uses 2 step verification.

All Apple has to do is save the owner's fingerprints on first use. Only those fingerprints can get access back to their accounts after being stolen. No need for the phone owner to ever update or change fingerprints, so if someone (thief) tries to change the fingerprints, Apple shuts down access to the phone to anyone that doesn't have those fingerprints.

I feel bad and sorry for those who lost their devices and unable to recover their data due to privacy concern policy. If Apple can authorize "Legacy Contact" to gain account access to recover photos, messages, notes, files, contacts, calendar events and device backups... why not create the same process for those stolen devices for owners to recover those data. for Legacy Contacts to file an access request they just need the "access key" that you can generate and hand over to that person & a copy of death certificate. so for Lost or Stolen Devices, what if Apple create the same "Legacy Contact" process which requires "access key" and this time a "police report", it will be a win win situation for both Apple and it's loyal patrons/customers.

My iPhone 📱 got stolen when I was in high school during track and field and I never got it back . It was one of the most saddest days ever . But now that I have a new iPhone I’m more aware of my surroundings. I keep my phone safe in my pocket and if someone asked me if they could use my phone to call someone I say no .

thankfully apple has done stuff however there is more things you can do 1. go to settings 2 screen time 3 content& privacy restrictions 4 turn off location access or select don't allow 5. turn off password changes, account changes what this does it prevent anyone from changing accounts signing in turning off location etc. 6 turn off access notifications and control center from lock screen

Absurd policy by apple. I know they wanted to be more secure about data collection. But, there should be some sort of verification process to at least get your files back.

A young guy stopped me recently looking for directions. He had his phone in his hand saying unfortunately he didn’t have a location search app. Being helpful I got out my iPhone and put in the address he was looking for and held the phone up for him to photograph the location. My iPhone is fingerprint access. Thinking about it after I realise how easy it was for someone to do this and snatch my phone from me with what seemed like an innocent enquiry. I still have my phone and not sure how innocent this incident was. Sad but it’s made me wary of anyone asking for anything.

This is why I'll never use an Apple phone. My (non Apple) phone requires a fingerprint to unlock. Each of my banking apps on the phone ALSO requires a fingerprint to access any of the accounts. There's no PIN/passcode to steal. Even if they steal my phone when it's unlocked, the banking apps will require a fingerprint to proceed.

I am surprised that Apple is allowing this to happen. These security issues and concerns can be fixed with a few lines of code. Maybe bring back fingerprint unlock? Maybe avoid pushing everyone to Face ID?
@svenf1
@svenf1 4 ай бұрын
Apple should definitely offer to accept proof of ID upon opening and while owning and having access to an Apple ID, so that it can be used to restore access after such a theft case. If someone chooses not to provide ID, well then that's their problem and I would understand that Apple can't help you at that point. It's beyond me why a company with so much brain power is unable to create a viable solution in the interest of all their honest customers.

Why would you lose access to your photos if your phone was stolen? If everything is backed up in iCloud, you can still access all of your photos from any other device with your login. Just because someone knows your iPhone password doesn’t mean they know your iCloud sign in info, especially if you have two factor authentication enabled. This video is misinformation.
