I think thats because stray cats have a different body language or a better understanding of body language. Not understanding what another cat wants to tell you can be fatal on the streets, so strays learn to communicate better than breeder cats or cats who grow up with humans, because they use other cues to communicate with us that might seem aggressive to a feral or stray cat. So I just think that Poki is able to understand her better and communicates on a level that she can understand. In the end trust is always achieved in understanding each other :)

I'm not a vet, but as to whether Pichi is blind or not, the fact that her pupil was wide throughout this whole video while your other cats' eyes were slitted (as is normal in a well-lit area) implies she cannot see or differentiate light very well. She might not be /totally/ blind, but her eye is certainly reacting as though she's constantly in the dark.

I’m not a vet, but I work at a vet clinic - Medically, Consistently large pupils can also be an indication of hypothyroidism in cats. Hypertension can also cause blindness, and thus permanently dilated pupils. If your cats pupils are *always* large, even during the day or when they are relaxed, you should consider taking your cat to the vet and doing some blood work, check blood pressure, and check the eyes. Hypothyroidism is common, and can be sneaky!

As someone who has had a fully blind cat that got progressively blind, no, Pichi is not fully blind. She's probably "legally" blind though, where she sees lights and shadows in very indistinct blobs, which is more than enough for cats to live their life normally. My cat Salem used to be like that, unfortunately with age, he completely lost his eyesight and was not able to climb confidently anymore. You could tell because he would use his paws and whiskers almost like a cane, to estimate the distance between steps, height, etc. It seems like he was also losing his sense of smell and hearing towards the end too, so that didn't help, but yeah I don't think Pichi is too bad eyesight wise ! She's clearly very active and confident, I hope her eye stays stable :)
@_Fizel_3 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is what I came down to say. You can tell when a cat is fully blind. Watching Pichi confidently leap to above the stove, you can easily tell she isn't. Our boy Pumpkin also went fully blind, though his was because of an infection. He never truly got off the ground after that. He would hop onto the couch because he could reach up and feel it, then onto the shelves behind it because he could also touch them. He couldn't use the towers anymore because they were just out of his reach.

You can also tell because her pupil is always dilated to bring in as much light as possible.
@MikeJF853 жыл бұрын
I was kind of noticing in a few early videos that that she has a kind of transition where she'd be very on-guard when she saw someone reaching out at a distance and then relax a bit when they got close enough, which made me wonder about that and if her remaining eye was bad enough she couldn't tell who it was until they were very close. Just speculation, of course, haven't seen enough to properly say.
@milkteamachine3 жыл бұрын
I think so too - when she's climbing around the kitchen imo she couldn't move around as securely if she was fully blind. It would definitely explain why she was very scared at first, in addition to the stressful situation she probably had to learn the layout of their apartment way longer than a cat with clear vision.

She’s probably jumped to that ledge so many times already that she’s memorized it.
@Whatlander3 жыл бұрын
She also jumps differently than our (99%) blind cat did. Ours would throw herself as high/far as she could with her claws out like little grappling hooks, then try to catch hold of something on her descent. (Like if she wanted up on the couch, she'd spring straight upwards & reach out to catch the ledge.) Pichi doesn't seem fully sighted, but she's probably somewhere in between poor eyesight and blindness.
@prcervi3 жыл бұрын
pichi is definitely seeing something, blind cats react noticeably worse(read crashing into) to things being moved around
@indigothecat3 жыл бұрын
10:14 On a few of her steps, Pichi seems unsure of her footing, you can even see her paw shake a bit before she sets it down. I had a cat with vision problems once and she sometimes did this. This isn't conclusive, but added onto 13:25 when Pichi's eye doesn't really react when you turn on the light, but Poki's eyes do, and that her eye seems to be permanently dilated quite wide throughout the video, she most likely has very weak vision remaining in the eye. It's better than no vision of course, but my guess is that it's very dark and she can just make out basic shapes and movements.
@SleeplessinOC3 жыл бұрын
Are there foods that can strengthen or improve their eyesight ?
@indigothecat3 жыл бұрын
@@SleeplessinOC Probably, but given that Pichi had pretty bad eye problems when they first found her (nystagmus in her "good" eye and the other eye being pushed back), and given just how doting of Cat Parents Jun & Rachel are, I don't think there is much more that can be done except to make sure that they make it easy for Pichi to find her way around and keeping things like cat beds, the litter box, food, and water dishes in easy to find places, and keeping the floor and cat trees/towers clear of clutter so she can find her way around easier. I imagine the transition to the new home will be a lot for her, but I'm confident in J&R to do a good job in helping her through it. :)

That paw shake is just like my cat does, but he can see very well. He's just very careful of where he puts his paws, because I used to tell him off for getting on the table. Unfortunately he now considers everything that's up as "the table". I also got mad when he pushed things off, so now he'll do anything to not make things fall. This makes him put down his paws sooo slowly and carefully, shaking sometimes and touching lifting touching, often balancing on three legs. Didn't realize he was so sensitive before, now I forgive his clumsiness, but he hasn't forgotten. It's been three years, he's four now, and completely over his wild years, it was just a phase, but I didn't know... I'm really sorry. I tell him all the time it's okay, pets, encouragement, but he's just very careful most of the time. At least on the floor he can play and run. If you can, learn from my mistakes. 😽

Noticed Pichi didn't react at all to the sudden change in brightness in the room while Poki did blink in 13:22 . Her pupils also seem always fully dilated most of the time based on this video. As a blind person, technically a legally blind person, meeting my vision is under 20/200(mine is 400 and one in the other eye) I feel uniquely qualified to explain how sense compensation works in blind people. Obviously, although we wish we could do this, our senses are not like daredevils. All we do is learn how to get information from the other senses, which is something that sighted people can't usually do, because they put way too much faith in their site. It's quite amusing what you guys can't do without vision. Anyway, you guys could do it too if you took the time to practice. We also assume things a lot. We're taught, for example, if the TV is on, odds are somebody's watching it, and you could, if you want to, go watch it with them. We get really good at statistical probability. Does it mean we're always right, but, for the most part, most of us learn, a equals B, and therefore C, or most likely C. I doubt that cats and other animals can do the letter of that, but their senses still compensate, and I still learn to pay more attention to their other senses once they have lost their site, or if they were born blind. My sister's dog recently did this. She's a lot more confident in her own home, obviously, but she knows where her bowl is, she knows where her the couch is. Actually, she knows how to get around very similar to how I do it. For instance, there is a rug from the stairs in the garage leading into the house, to the outside, and she knows, when she's found that rug, follow it to get back inside. She also has basically the whole house and yard mapped out, so she doesn't get lost. Not sure how much vision Pichi has, but she's definitely doing these things, and using the vision that she does have, as I do. Hope this helps. Glad your cats are all feeling better.

I’m legally blind, also (20/400 in worse eye) and I can vouch. When a sense is limited, you work around it. I memorize things a lot. So, if there’s construction near my doctor’s office or my software updates and buttons move, I have to start over and build new pathways. If Pichi is in this house with minimal changes, she’s probably memorized a lot, too.

@@satoukazuma168 Accessibility features are great in today's gadget! They can help you navigate the phone (I.e. having the phone speaks to you about which button/icon/option is being selected, or use voice commands), and also help you read and write. For writing comments, some options are voice-to-text and using Braille keyboard. Voice-to-text is pretty explanatory, your phone writes what you dictate. Braille keyboard is just like a usual keyboard where you spell out letters, but instead keys to signify a certain letter, you use a combination of gestures from both thumbs to spell out the letter. I'm not blind but I worked closely with one, so I might be missing something! Edit: you may want to check Lucy Edwards! She has tiktok and a KZbin channel where she explains her daily life as a blind person, like "How does a blind girl watch a KZbin video" or "How does a blind girl cook egg fried rice". About the invisible fleas problem, it can happen when you have rodents living in the walls of your building. A few years back we had a cat that got intestinal parasites from the feces of mice we didn't even know were there. We were really confused as to how he caught those parasites, as he we had adopted him from a shelter that did full workups, and even then he developed symptoms like a year later. He never went outside or ate anything other than his store-bought food or tiny human-grade nibbles. The mice were really discreet and left their feces in a spot that only the cat was able to reach (a gap in the counter adjacent to the dishwasher that inexplicably attracted food debris like dry pasta and rice, and which I often tried to vacuum and clean with limited success). It didn't smell, either, because there was only a couple and I guess the cat scared them into not leaving too many trails. Not too long after the parasite incident we saw one coming out of the gap and called the exterminator. And we understood why our cat was obsessed by that spot. So I would start suspecting that if the problems persists even after treating the cats.

My British Bombay, Tia (15) has been in perfect health her entire life until just recently. I was petting her one evening and felt a cartlidge-type growth on her upper hind leg near her tail. I could feel a tentacle like growth extending from it. My heart sank immediately and my blood ran cold. I knew it wasn't good because of that tentacle, hat it was probably cancerous. It was. My vet told me that 90% of bumps on cats are never good unlike dogs where it's 50/50. Tia had a fibroid sarcoma that was vaccine-related. She had had the Purevax rabies vaccine, considered the safest, every year without any problem. They don't know why it can suddenly develop years later, but she had her vaccine shot in February and I discovered the growth in early April. My vet is very proactive and believes in taking out tumors right away in cats - and taking a wide margin with it. He doesn't wait for the results to come back from a lab to determine whether or not it's cancerous. He says "We can find that out later. When I see a bump in a cat, I remove it asap. If it is benign, no harm done. If it's malignant, then we got it as soon as we could." He's' almost my age and I'm 70. His wife is a vet also. He is very warm and exudes kindness. I call him the Mister Rogers of Vets. Tia couldn't have a better vet. Good luck with Poki. ❤

I hope Tia is recovering well! Do you know if it was cancerous?
@tiamia71393 жыл бұрын
@@cynoglav9665 Thank you. Yes, fibroidsarcoma is a very aggressive type of cancer so I must remain vigilant for any new bumps/growths. I check Tia daily whenever I'm petting her or brushing her. If I feel anything at all, I will be at the vet's office immediately. So far so good, but we're only at the 5 month mark since her tumor excision. Fibroidsarcomas are so aggressive that they will frequently return after a period of 6-12 months after a tumor has been excised. You REALLY have to remain vigilant. Tia goes to the vet every 4 to 6 weeks to have her anal glands drained and I have her vet give her a thorough going over to see if he feels anything that shouldn't be there. I've had Tia for 15 years now, since she was 6 months old, and am very attuned to her little moods and how she normally behaves; so I am being very watchful day-to-day for any changes in her behavior. In general, she's an extremely chill, laid-back cat .What I want cat owners to know is, if you feel a bump on your cat, don't wait to get it checked out. Run don't walk to your vet because most bumps in cats are cancerous, over 90%. Dogs are different. He said bumps in dogs are around 50/50 malignant. Thank you for asking about Tia. It was very kind of you. She is my little love and best friend. I'm getting emotional just typing this because I can't imagine my life without her in it. She is so devoted and loves me so much. She has stood by my side whenever I've been sick, such as pneumonia, and when I had an emergency double hysterectomy and appendectomy when a large but benign ovarian tumor almost killed me in 2009. "Nursecat Tia" only left my bed to eat her food and use the litter box. She literally lay by my side for 2 weeks watching over me like my feline guardian angel. She would follow me to the bathroom and lay her head on my feet when I was on the toilet. She was afraid to leave me alone whatsoever. I am her person and she was standing guard over me. She has a very nice fluffy, expensive marshmallow bed to sleep in, but she prefers to sleep next to me at night with her head resting in the curve of my arm. I have had many pets (all rescues) in my life, I loved them all, but Tia is an exceptionally sensitive, devoted companion. 🐱💖
