The last Olympics in Tokyo were one of the hottest on record, with more than a hundred athletes suffering heat-related illnesses.
To avoid a similar situation at the Paris Olympics this summer, more and more athletes are adopting heat-training strategies to get ahead of the competition.
Qasa Alom, from the BBC’s Climate Question podcast, has been to meet one of them - Phil Sesemann.

I get what you're saying, but a lot of people care a LOT about sports, including the kinds of people who otherwise don't watch the news or care about / believe there is a climate crisis. Any means to bring their attention to the issue is probably a good idea.

@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll you have to be living in the arctic circle not to see the changes. And even there...the changes haven't been subtle. Yes sadly too many people care more about sports than actual concerns. It's bread and circus.

hmmm but also how is our entire global species going to adapt to extreme heat
@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll
@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll 17 күн бұрын
So, us humans are pretty good at heat adaptation, relatively speaking. Our crops, fish stocks and other species we depend on are in a lot more trouble. In S1E5 of "Extrapolations," the whole Indian subcontinent appears to have shifted most activities to nighttime because of frequently lethal daytime temperatures. That's doable for some human activities, as is living underground, but again the really major problem is food production. We can adapt - up to a point. We MUST slow (and then stop and then, hopefully, reverse) the warming before it gets beyond that point.

I began investing in stocks and Def earlier this year, and it is the best choice l've ever made. My portfolio is rounding up to almost a million, and I have realized that when a stock makes it to the news. Chances are you're quite late to the party, the idea is to get in early on blue chips before it becomes public. There are lots of life changing opportunities in the market, and maximize it

Truth is they aren't, because the heat isn't literal anymore. Used to be temperature, now it's getting canceled over long-standing cultural traditions, like a victory kiss. So glad I never became an Athlete, would've sucked to see my career go down the drain over petty bs just becahse everyone wants to be a brainless moron these days, on BOTH sides. Only situation where both sides are at fault ngl, but man is it a fault. I think of this stuff these days, and I just see Butters, from South Park, getting jailed for pinching people who aren't wearing green on St. Patrick's Day, this is literally what the world has come to, Culture only matters if you're brown or your culture doesn't offend stupid people, and ngl, it's about time we had a right proper push back against such idiocy, it's not Cancel Culture (when you're fired for actually doing something wrong), it's Culture Canceling (when your very culture itself is being canceled because it offends someone with delicate sensibilities for some arbitrary reason), and we MUST stop it before it ruins the whole world, all of our diversity, and leaves us stranded in uniformity and compliance, where you need consent to even take a shit.

Hilarious. There has been 1.5 F degrees of warming on AVERAGE over the last CENTURY. Most of that has been in winter and overnight temperatures. In the U.S., the only country with extensive records from 100 years ago, the 1930s had the most frequent and intense heat waves. The BBC really needs to get some perspective.
