I remember seeing this movie in the theater when it came out and I was a lad of 8. I fell hopelessly in love with Petula Clark, and now, more than 50 years later, hearing her sing still melts my heart.

@@thedriveinmoviehistory5327 I remember hearing it on the radio and around the house as my folks had at least one of her albums and "Downtown" was on it.

Its a very lovely movie with a very bittersweet ending. Fred's last musical, and in the end he dances away waving farewell. Definitely worth watching

Yes, just gorgeous. I really love the ending when they sing to Fred, and Fred's character waves goodbye....

Stunningly the best version of this song and as it is sung by the entire cast at the end of the movie. This was Fred Astaires last movie. He loved it. Getting Petula Clark and Tommy Steele (as the leprechaun) and Keenan Wynn !!!, cast in the move was amazing. The movie was perfectly cast in my opinion. The adaption for screen quite acceptable (several changes to story but well done). The surprise singer in my opinion was Don Francks. Not much of an actor, I thought he was mis cast util I heard him sing! WHAT a voice. His version of Old Devil Moon with Petula Clark was simply outstanding. This is absolutely in my top 5 movies of all time regardless of genre. And the movie messages, what the entire show was original written about - racism and treatment of the poor - is just as relevant today.

Agreed, mostly. This was Fred's last musical movie, the last time he sang and danced on the big screen. He did continue doing other types of movies until his last, "Ghost Story" in 1981, which was not only his last appearance on the silver screen, but alos the last appeance of two other classic era actors, Melvyn Douglas and Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

Mr. Astaire played a conman in 1974’s The Towering Inferno, which was a massive hit.

Should definitely be on almost any viewer's list of "favorite movies about the Irish". I was going to say "favorite Irish movies" except that it isn't actually Irish. My favorite Irish movie is The Secret of Roan Inish, which *is* actually Irish. ^___^

I heard the Julie Andrews' version and loved it, but Petula Clarke's version seems to give the song the right colour.

The composer's had a poor knowledge of Irish geography, if they think there is a river that runs from Donegal to Kildare
@thedriveinmoviehistory53274 ай бұрын
LOL, true... wait, doesn't it run right through Glocca Morra???? The composer was Jewish, Burton Lane (originally Burton Levy), as was the lyricist Yip Harburg (originally Isidore Hochberg). Still, its a very nice song...
