A nice nod to watch fans was a scene in X-Men Dark Phoenix. Professor X wears a Rolex Milgauss ref. 116400 when he has a meeting with Magneto. It's definitely a watch chosen by the character specifically due to its anti magnetic qualities.

The GMT bezel also is often used to keep track of “home time” when away from home. By removing the bezel, one can relate that to Colonel Kurtz abandoning any connection to home.

I recall reading or hearing somewhere recently, that the Patrick Bateman character in American Psycho wears a Seiko 5, in two tone, gold steel, with fluted bezel. It looks like a Rolex from a distance, but it is not. They HAD to switch to a Seiko from their plan to have him wear the Rolex, because Rolex would not let them use one of their watches in such a movie, and so they were forced to go with a watch which would look like a Date-Just from a distance... but I am pretty sure it is a Seiko 5.
@paco209272 ай бұрын
It is a Seiko 5, for the exact reason you said. But also I think the Seiko fooling others into thinking it’s something it’s not kind of sums up Patrick Bateman
@Apis42 ай бұрын
@@paco20927 Or, the opposite maybe? The ambiguity of the ending, is founded, and Bateman actually was just delusional, and actually isn't what he thinks he is, so it's actually hiding anything....which might be apt for Seiko too 😛

I agree about Redford's character in All is Lost (which is a great film, by the way). The SKX is an "instrument" that fulfills a specific and vital function, similar to the instrument he takes on the raft with him as a means of navigation. And the watch is the one constant. He has to think creatively about the boat itself and all of the other things he either salvages or surrenders as the boat goes down. The watch is just about the only thing that's "easy to understand."

In the remake of Thomas Crown, Pierce Brosnan sports a JLC Reverso, which, like Bruce Wayne is a nice touch highlighting the duality of the character (and Crown's is the classic version, when flipped it hides the face)

Bond wears his Rolex Submariner in Thunderball - about 92 minutes in, when he swims ashore and discovers Largo's crews' diving gear, we get a good long look at it, when he checks the time. The Breitling was just a geiger-counter to check the presence of nuclear weapons. Tom Cruise's Panerai PAM 63 GMT in Tropic Thunder is worth a mention - they are quite rare - unlike the ubiquitous Rolex (the watch for those who no little about watches).

It's a good thing you didn't mention the watch worn by Don Draper in a part of the series, as shown in the picture at the beginning of this video. It's a Rolex Explorer, but they did a poor job in selecting a reference 14270, which started in 1989, whereas he wears it in the early 60's and should have been a 6610 or a 1016.

6:41 Problably one of the biggest disinformations in horological history: Patrick Bateman (played by actor Cristian Bale) never wore a Rolex Datejust in the classic 2000 movie American Psycho, because Rolex didn’t want to be associated with an evil movie character. The watch in the movie is a discontinued 38mm two-tone stainless steel Seiko with a fluted bezel reference SNXJ90, featuring a white colored dial with day and date display feature, on a jubilee bracelet. Its resemblance to the Datejust is of course unquestionable, but still - it is a Seiko.

I served in the US Navy for 20 years in UDT. Since retirement, I own a dive school and worked on several films as a technical advisor. Granted, there are a lot of admirable reasons to the selection of the watches, however, in the end it is usually about product placement. Also, I don't wear Doxa watches because Matthew McConaughey wore one in the movie, Sahara. Makes no difference that the character in the novels, Dirk Pitt, preferred Doxa. I wear Doxa simply because it is a dive watch for divers and has proven itself throughout the years.

The point about Bruce Wayne wearing the JLC Reverso, and how "[...] how characters best represent themselves through their superheroes, not so much through their everyday selves." reminds me of what Quentin Tarantino said about the main difference between Superman and Batman. Tarantino said, "Bruce Wayne puts on a costume to become Batman, but when (Kal-El (Superman) wakes up every morning, he's already Superman. Each morning Superman puts on his Clark Kent costume to make himself appear normal. Clark Kent is Superman's criticism of how he sees human men.

In my eyes, Heat is a movie that plays that role of connecting watches to characters to a level pf perfection. In the movie, the two rivalry characters played by Al Pacino and De Niro wear contrasting watches. Al, who is an LAPD Detective, wears a Bvlgari Diagono, a very unaffordable watch for a detective’s salary. The watch not only serves as an extension to his character that appreciates luxury and sophistication, but also indicates that it was probably a gift from a woman giving off a slight hint about his previous relationships. On the flip-side, De Niro rocks a Timex Stealth showing he’s a guy who is more towards tech and functionality.

Great vid! A really interesting subject even if the choice is too often down to sponsorship and product placement. Hamilton should get a mention (most numerous film appearances of any brand) as well as some of the Bond's Roger Moore era Seikos (eg the mighty Tuna!). Jaws is good for watches too. The Sub in Bond is interesting - I think we are living in an era where the Sub is common and seen as everyday. Where people wear them to the office and for their presenting job on TV. But this was a hugely glamorous watch back in the '60s - rakish luxury and style infused with daring-do and danger. Ideal for Bond.

Given how much of a pain it is for continuity and the reflection from the lighting (especially for Rolex without any AR coating) when filming a watch dial on, it's a wonder any get shown in films at all - you've got to assume it is deliberate when it is obvious and not part of the plot, as Apollo 13 is for the Speedmaster.

Although Rolex was good pick, since Rolex started as British watch company, and later moved to Swiss, I think Omega is total miss.
