As a corrolary to 'mechanical sympathy', read the manual that comes with your watch (or download a copy if you didn't get one). Aside from showing how to use all the features/complications (try figuring out how to set the timer on a Yachtmaster II without reading the manual), it will also let you know things you shouldn't do. For instance, if you have a chronograph that doesn't have a flyback feature and you try pressing the reset while it's still running, you can seriously damage the mechanism in some watches. The more complicated the watch, the more likely that there are gatcha's like this.

I just used to call people who broke things or didn't seem to have it, 'heavy handed'. I never knew that they probably just don't have 'mechanical sympathy'. Could you use that on a CV, job application or an online dating profile, do you think? Haha. Something I don't get about watches. People talk about how they love automatic watches and they have "soul" and it's satisfying to know and feel that their mechanical watches having moving parts in them. Cool, fine, I love that too. But then at the same time people complain about how loud the rotor on a Bambino is or something like that. Isn't the sound of the rotor part of the appeal? It is proof that your watch has something mechanical inside of it.
@lereconst1346 жыл бұрын
MobiusCoin i have read this comment before surprised me. I have an orient bambino and i could only hear the rotor if i have my ear against the pretty watch. And mu hearing is normal. Probably over expectation or over analyzing the watch? I would expect at least some sort of sound, anyway, given the engineering involved in the pieces.

Good video but I have to say I think you left some info out on the date adjust. I was always taught run your hands to 6 o'clock (even if you don't know if its am or pm) and then adjust your date to one day prior. Then roll your time forward to the correct date and time.
@aaronthomas48836 жыл бұрын
@Tom Smith What is the correct procedure?
@lucascardinfranco20116 жыл бұрын
Aaron Thomas you see, the problem is between 8:00pm and 3:00am, mostly, when the gears ⚙️ (i liked that emoji) of the day start to move, so what you said isn’t wrong, because if you don’t know if it’s 3:00 am or pm, it is better to leave the pointers out of that range of 8pm and 3am and change the day. My Montblanc star date automatic’s manual states that it’s not recommended to change the date between 8:00pm and 2:00am, in the other hand, my father’s Breitling states in it’s manual that it’s recommended to change the date between 8:00pm and 3:00am, so you gotta check your watch’s manual to see what’s the range of hours that can damage the watch.
@lucascardinfranco20116 жыл бұрын
Aaron Thomas and if you leave the date to one day prior and roll the time forward to correct the date, you will never make it wrong, because when the date changes, it means it’s 12:00 pm, than you correct the watch to am or pm as your need, as if you change the date itself, you might be using the watch in Pm in the Am period, therefore, it will change the date at 12:00 am, instead of 12:00 pm.

For an Automatic watch, this probably wouldn't apply, but I would like to add something that you shouldn't do to a Battery operated Quartz watch. Simply enough...Don't pull out the crown so it doesn't run (and use the battery) when you aren't using it. It's believed that dust can get inside (if the crown is left out) and that can cause problems down the road. Most battery watches will last a good 2 years (or maybe longer if you don't use any chronograph functions, for watches that have those) anyway, so pulling out the crown to get longer battery life isn't necessary. Especially if it may need to be professionally cleaned if leaving out the crown leads to it not going back in correctly, or it becomes difficult to turn to set the time.

Mag tapes are very reliable and in car parks the problem is usually debris on the read head in the machine or the write head at the ticket barrier on the way in resulting in no write or error in the data. Once data is on the tape its very difficult to remove it with anything you would have in your pockets etc. Your phone speaker magnet is certainly not going to effect it even if left directly next to it for very long periods of time. My watch stopped at a concert, and I had no idea why. it didn't start up at all until days later. I am wondering if big concert speakers have strong enough magnets to affect an automatic watch?
@sjm43065 жыл бұрын
magnetic strength is proportional to the inverse square of the distance (meaning you would basically have to be within inches right in front of a speaker for it to have any non-negligible effect). More likely than not it was the very high spl (sound pressure level), that had some effect on the delicately balanced mechanical parts of your watch. The point that the video makes about phone speaker magnets being dangerous is way overstated unless the watch is stored right on top of the speaker for an appreciable amount of time.

Hi there.I have a question: What are the effects of temperature on a mechanical watch? I am saving up for a new Omega Seamaster 300. The reason I want this brand and model is because I want a watch that can endure everything I encounter in every day of my life. But...can I wear it in the sauna? I have seen one person wearing a watch in the sauna, but I don't know what make or model it was.

Its rare and I agree most of the time its horrible idea. However I have a few that do look very nice and clean on the outside of a long sleeve shirt. Guess I'm dumb but I like it. And to me it has nothing to do with trying to show off . I just do what I like and makes me feel good.best part is others opinions mean nothing to me.

Could you review the Citizen Chronomaster aq4020? While in general quartz pieces haven't the soul and craftsmanship of mechanicals, I think there are exceptions. It takes passion to pursue making the perfect quartz piece as well. This would make an interesting topic. Citizens flagship is a prime example of this. It gets way too little exposition in the watch community outside Japan (It is a j.d.m. release), and I believe it deserves a review by someone as good at it as you are 😊
