If the digital age has taught us anything, it’s that there’s something unquestionably appealing about analogue. Whether its hi-fi, photography, cars or watches, being in control of a machine with moving parts that we can manipulate and understand is inherently satisfying. But as technology moves forward, knowledge of the old ways wanes, some of it to be lost forever. It is our responsibility to pass that knowledge on to new generations of aficionados, our duty-so with that in mind, here are five things you must never do with your mechanical watch.

1. Don't quickset the date between 10PM and 2AM (on most quickset date watches). 2. Avoid magnets, i.e. mobile phone speakers. If your watch becomes de-magnetised, you can get it re-magnetised. 3. Don't wear your watch over the top of your clothing (unless you're a diver). 4. Don't unscrew the crown of a watch underwater & don't take (most) chronographs under water (unless they have screw down pushers). 5. Don't force the watches mechanism i.e. force overwinding it.

As a corrolary to 'mechanical sympathy', read the manual that comes with your watch (or download a copy if you didn't get one). Aside from showing how to use all the features/complications (try figuring out how to set the timer on a Yachtmaster II without reading the manual), it will also let you know things you shouldn't do. For instance, if you have a chronograph that doesn't have a flyback feature and you try pressing the reset while it's still running, you can seriously damage the mechanism in some watches. The more complicated the watch, the more likely that there are gatcha's like this.

Loving that concept of 'mechanical sympathy' that you raised in item 5. I think I've (almost) always had it and been practicing it but I never knew it had a name or I was doing 'a thing'. I just used to call people who broke things or didn't seem to have it, 'heavy handed'. I never knew that they probably just don't have 'mechanical sympathy'. Could you use that on a CV, job application or an online dating profile, do you think? Haha. Like, 'I have mechanical sympathy for cars, bicycles, washing machine control knobs, and fridge, microwave and door handles, etc'.

If I may add my own sad element to this list, 5a) Do not allow a local watchmaker to work on your high-end watch, regardless of what they may profess or even if the warranty is over. @@tods.9947 Yeah, it's a good phrase which puts a lot of quite abstract and complex issues in a nutshell. I suppose the test of a good buzzword is when everyone understands it and you never need to explain it. Something I don't get about watches. People talk about how they love automatic watches and they have "soul" and it's satisfying to know and feel that their mechanical watches having moving parts in them. Cool, fine, I love that too. But then at the same time people complain about how loud the rotor on a Bambino is or something like that. Isn't the sound of the rotor part of the appeal? It is proof that your watch has something mechanical inside of it.
@lereconst134

MobiusCoin i have read this comment before surprised me. I have an orient bambino and i could only hear the rotor if i have my ear against the pretty watch. And mu hearing is normal. I’ve never heard it called Mechanical Sympathy before. I love it, and will have to borrow it. It’s perfect! I’ve only used the term “being careful” or having “finesse” before. I was born in 1980. My father is a mechanical engineer, so I learned “mechanical sympathy” very early on, you could say, and it’s definitely something that isn’t learned, taught, or employed as much anymore by younger people. Women especially as most of them tend yo beat on cars. Ask any mechanic. I for one, would never buy a used car from a woman under the age of 55.

Aaron Thomas you see, the problem is between 8:00pm and 3:00am, mostly, when the gears ⚙️ (i liked that emoji) of the day start to move, so what you said isn’t wrong, because if you don’t know if it’s 3:00 am or pm, it is better to leave the pointers out of that range of 8pm and 3am and change the day. My Montblanc star date automatic’s manual states that it’s not recommended to change the date between 8:00pm and 2:00am, in the other hand, my father’s Breitling states in it’s manual that it’s recommended to change the date between 8:00pm and 3:00am, so you gotta check your watch’s manual to see what’s the range of hours that can damage the watch.
@lucascardinfranco2011
@lucascardinfranco2011 5 жыл бұрын
Aaron Thomas and if you leave the date to one day prior and roll the time forward to correct the date, you will never make it wrong, because when the date changes, it means it’s 12:00 pm, than you correct the watch to am or pm as your need, as if you change the date itself, you might be using the watch in Pm in the Am period, therefore, it will change the date at 12:00 am, instead of 12:00 pm.

@suplex2000
@suplex2000 4 жыл бұрын
For an Automatic watch, this probably wouldn't apply, but I would like to add something that you shouldn't do to a Battery operated Quartz watch. Simply enough...Don't pull out the crown so it doesn't run (and use the battery) when you aren't using it. It's believed that dust can get inside (if the crown is left out) and that can cause problems down the road. Most battery watches will last a good 2 years (or maybe longer if you don't use any chronograph functions, for watches that have those) anyway, so pulling out the crown to get longer battery life isn't necessary. Especially if it may need to be professionally cleaned if leaving out the crown leads to it not going back in correctly, or it becomes difficult to turn to set the time.

Great wisdom in this video 👍 I'm ashamed to say that I trashed my Breitling Chronomat 44 by trying to unscrew the top pusher when it was already unscrewed. I used needle nose pliers thinking it was stuck. Cost over 1k with a trip for the watch back to Switzerland, but my beloved is back on n my wrist with apologies to her! 😅

I'm glad I'm not the only one who talks to my watch 🤣 Mine is a ladies skeleton watch my son (lovely man) bought me as an early Mother's Day present. I've only had it since Saturday but already have an affinity with him (yes, mine's a him). I keep telling him how much I love him, how I love to see his little heart (balance wheel) beating, tell him goodnight and good morning. Anyone seeing me would probably shake their head in despair but to me a mechanical watch has a soul and a life of its own.

My watch stopped at a concert, and I had no idea why. it didn't start up at all until days later. I am wondering if big concert speakers have strong enough magnets to affect an automatic watch?
@sjm4306
@sjm4306 5 жыл бұрын
magnetic strength is proportional to the inverse square of the distance (meaning you would basically have to be within inches right in front of a speaker for it to have any non-negligible effect). More likely than not it was the very high spl (sound pressure level), that had some effect on the delicately balanced mechanical parts of your watch. The point that the video makes about phone speaker magnets being dangerous is way overstated unless the watch is stored right on top of the speaker for an appreciable amount of time.

I live on a cold country and wear several layers of clothing, if i have to pull all of them down just to see the the time it defeats the purpose of wearing a watch. ‘Mechanical empathy’ is more appropriate to say than mechanical ‘sympathy’. Sympathy is feeling sorry for someone (no one wants to be felt sorry for, but they do welcome someone sharing their pain) or in this case for some thing. Empathy is sharing (feeling) someone’s or in this case some things distress or whatever is troubling to them or it.

TBF. I was wearing a nice jacket the other day, and the sleeves come to a 2 inch elastic end. If I put my watch underneath it, it felt really tight. If I pulled my watch outside of the sleeve it would be pushed into the edge of my wrist/hand. At that moment I thought, If i had a large quickset function on my black bay 58, I could just wear it right over top of that part of the sleeve and it'll feel so much more comfortable.

Mag tapes are very reliable and in car parks the problem is usually debris on the read head in the machine or the write head at the ticket barrier on the way in resulting in no write or error in the data. Once data is on the tape its very difficult to remove it with anything you would have in your pockets etc. Your phone speaker magnet is certainly not going to effect it even if left directly next to it for very long periods of time. HTH.

Could you review the Citizen Chronomaster aq4020? While in general quartz pieces haven't the soul and craftsmanship of mechanicals, I think there are exceptions. It takes passion to pursue making the perfect quartz piece as well. This would make an interesting topic. Citizens flagship is a prime example of this. It gets way too little exposition in the watch community outside Japan (It is a j.d.m. release), and I believe it deserves a review by someone as good at it as you are 😊

Since JJ was founded in 1740, didn ´t JJ originate this President Day Date appearance, not back then, but at least, `before ´ Rolex made it’s iteration ?
